Course Description:

This health class is intended to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to maintain physical, mental, and social well-being. Students will study health issues by examining their life styles, selecting goals for good health and learning how to achieve and maintain optimum health. They will be involved in decision making about wise health practices, learning that all choices carry with them consequences, either good or bad. Behaviors that may prevent illness, accidents, and stress, and that promote wellness, will be studied. In accordance with the California Healthy Youth Act ~ Education Code 51930 -51939, HIV/AIDS and Comprehensive Sexual Health Education will be covered in this course. Parents may view the materials used for these topics during Back-to-School Night in the library and may request in writing that their child not participate in this instruction. Students will have the opportunity to investigate potential career choices, along with creating a resume, filling out a job application and preparing for a job interview. Topics in this course can be controversial and sometimes upsetting to certain individuals. It is important that we are all respectful of everyone’s background and beliefs. The California Health Education Content Standards for Health that will be covered in this course can be found at:

Materials:

-Pen and Pencil

-3-ring binder, you may use a section from another binder

- lined paper for journals

-SSR book

-colored pencils

-student agenda book/calendar

Homework/classwork: LATE HOMEWORK WILL ONLY BE ACCEPTED ONE DAY LATE, FOR ½ CREDIT! IF IT IS MORE THAN ONE DAY LATE, IT WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED! It is the student’s responsibility to turn in all assignments. If the homework/classwork assignment is not present in class when collected, it is considered late and may be handed in the next day for ½ credit. Keep all graded homework for your records for the entire semester! In addition, most of this class is packet-form; the individual worksheets within the packets may be checked for verification of completion. All work will be collected and graded at the end of each chapter/section.

Tests/quizzes: Unannounced quizzes may be given; therefore, it is imperative to keep up with the reading and all assignments on a regular basis. Chapter tests will always be announced. All quizzes and tests may vary in points, and may include essay, multiple choice, T/F, matching, fill-in-the-blank, and any other testing form necessary to assess the students. If a student is absent the day of a test or quiz, it is their responsibility to make it up. Failure to communicate with me the day you return after the absence, will result in a zero.

Absent/tardy: Students are expected to attend class every day and to arrive on time! Students with extensive absences generally do not pass this course. Check the class calendar frequently for current class information. The weekly class calendar will be written on the white board and in the calendar on the website. If a student is absent, s/he has the number of days absent for additional time to hand in homework. Many assignments are in-class only and CANNOT be made up: Current Event Articles, Video notes, group work, pop-quizzes, Current Health magazines, Visual Thinking Strategies, etc.

A student is tardy if s/he is not IN THEIR SEAT, WORKING ON THE WARM-UP, BY THE BELL RINGING! If the warm-up assignment is to “turn in an assignment”, and you are tardy, then your assignment will be considered LATE and will only received ½ credit. JBHS’ attendance policy will be enforced: No make-up for unexcused absences (this includes suspensions).

Class Rules: Following these rules will ensure a fun and safe environment to learn!

#1 Rule: BE RESPECTFUL of the teacher, your peers, and yourself.

-When you respect me, you won’t talk while I’m talking.

-When you respect your peers, you won’t make inappropriate comments to them.

No profanity, name-calling, horse-playing, etc.

-When you respect yourself, you will come to class prepared and complete your work.

Arrive on time (not tardy) with binder, homework, pencils, etc.

-Do NOT put away work early. Stay seated and working until I dismiss you.

-BUSD dress code will be strictly enforced. I will send you to get a “loaner” shirt whether you roll your eyes or not…

-No food, drinks or gum is/are allowed in class with the exception of water.

-Cell phones and other electronic devices are to be turned off and put away at all times during the school day (including passing periods, break time and lunch time). Failure to follow this rule will result in the device being confiscated and given to the Discipline office.

-Students will pay for vandalism of any classroom materials.

-The JBHS Academic Honesty Policy will be strictly enforced.

Participation: Participation means reading the chapters, learning the vocabulary, asking and answering questions (about the lessons), listening when others are speaking, taking notes, and leaving your seat only when necessary and given permission to do so. You will lose participation points for tardiness, unexcused absences, and for not following class rules.

Edmodo posts will be required and part of the grade.

Grading: All Assignments and assessments will be graded on a point system. All assignments and tests will be worth various points in accordance with the amount, the difficulty, and the importance of the information. At the end of each semester, each student will be given points for class participation and conduct.

It is the student’s responsibility to check their posted grade and make sure the points are correct; all work should be kept in the 3-ring binder and should be easily accessible to double-check the scores. If there is no proof (as in, you did not keep your work and threw it away), then I have no way to know that you actually did that particular assignment and you could receive a zero. *See homework/classwork section to reinforce the rule of keeping all work in the binder.

**Use of an Aeries App is recommended**

Grades will be assigned to the following percentages:

A 90-100 B 80-89 C 70-79 D 60-69 F 59 and below

Potential Guest Speakers/Ed Code: It is possible that there will be a few guest speakers. One potential speaker is from One Legacy who will discuss organ donations. Students will not be required to participate in the presentation if they do not feel comfortable with the pictures, videos, or topics. However, an alternative assignment (not a punishment) will be given for those students. Be advised, there could be other speakers throughout the year and the same conditions of an alternative assignment will take place.

Parents may view the materials used for the Comprehensive Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS topics during Back-to-School Night in the library and may request in writing that their child not participate in this instruction.

Service Learning: Students are required to complete 10 hours of service learning by 12th grade. Hours accumulated on Form C’s are turned in to the Career Center.

• This page will be turned in for Mrs. Gillett’s records. An electronic copy will be available for you to view.

Extra help/email: My email address is oakleygillett@. Feel free to email me at anytime about anything you need help with. However, please use this additional resource according to your best judgment. It is your responsibility to ask me for extra instruction, which I will be happy to help you with! In addition, your grade is your responsibility so I can teach the information to you, but if you are not motivated to take the time to learn it (including completing assignments), then you won’t be successful. Some items in this class may be objective, so final decisions will be made by me, the teacher of this class.

I want you to take responsibility for your own health! I want you to care about what you put into your body and how it will affect you as an older individual, as well as the world around you. Bring a positive attitude and a smile when you walk in the door, and I’ll be happy to continue to help you become a more healthy person…inside and out! I am looking forward to a great year with you in Health.

Healthily yours,

Oakley Gillett
