Step #1

Open your notebook to page 33

Step #2

Draw a straight line across the front of the paper.

Step #3

Mark every inch across the line.

Step #4

Label every 1 inch 100 years starting with 400. IMPORTANT: You must have an accurate scale (i.e. 1 inches = 100 years). Write the scale on the paper.

Step #5

Put each of the dates below on your timeline where they appropriately fit. Make sure you have 10 events.

1215 – Barons force King John to sign the Magna Carta at Runnymede

1347 – The first trace of the Black Death in Europe

1096 – The First Crusade begins

1291 – The Crusades end

1225 – Final draft of the Magna Carta was signed

768 – Charlemagne became Frankish king

1146 – Turks begin uniting and taking back cities in the Holy Land

800 – Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne Emperor of the Romans

1000 - European Feudalism begins

476 – End of the Roman Empire

Using color, draw 3 illustrations in the space above your timeline. You can draw pictures from different events.

Step #7

Answer the following questions on the page, below your timeline.

1. How long was Charlemagne a king before he became an Emperor?

2. How long did the Crusades last?

3. How many years did it take for the final draft of the Magna Carta to be signed after King John was forced to sign the first draft?

Now on the timeline place just the letter where the events below would fit onto the timeline.

A – 750 – Beds become popular in France and Germany.

B – 797 – French kings establish a royal messenger service.

C – 915 – Crossbows used in Europe.

D – 1124 – Coins are first minted in Scotland.

E – 1190 – The magnetic compass is used by mariners in Western Europe.

F – 1253 – Linen is made in England.

G – 1269 – The first English toll roads are built.

H – 1328 – The sawmill is invented.
