Matabeleland AIDS Council (MAC) is an AIDS Service Organization that was established in 1988 and is based at 97A Josiah Tongogara Street, between 9th and 10th Avenues in the city of Bulawayo in Zimbabwe.

Matabeleland AIDS Council is registered as a welfare organization registration number W/O 8/90. The organisation’s vision is that of being a “Vibrant membership organization accountable for sustained empowerment of communities coping with the impact of HIV and AIDS”.

MAC has the mandate of capacitating and empowering individuals and organizations in the Matabeleland Region through the provision of engendered, client- centred services in the form of prevention, mitigation, care and support, and livelihood skills training, to initiate and manage sustainable responses to the impact of HIV and AIDS. In order to achieve its mandate the organization has three main strategic objectives as indicated below;

• To build the capacities of communities and individuals to respond to the impact of HIV & AIDS

• To promote awareness, factual information and knowledge on HIV & AIDS issues

• To improve access to testing and counselling ( HTC) services and Care, Support and Treatment services in Matabeleland

MAC Operational Areas

MAC operates in seventeen districts of Matabeleland; namely 7 under Matabeleland North Province; 4 under Matabeleland South Provinces and 6 under Bulawayo metropolitan Province.

Organizational Structure

MAC is a membership based organization and currently has a board comprising of nine members. The board has representation from different target groups in the community namely people living with HIV and AIDS and young people. Individuals co-opted into the board include the Human Resource Advisor, Legal Advisor, Medical Advisor and Board Treasurer. The organization currently has a staff complement of 35 people (17 females and 18 males) and is headed by a management team of 5 people (3 females and 2 males). In the spirit of giving back to the community the organization engages six interns from different universities on an annual basis.

The main target groups of MAC are;

• People Living with HIV

• Orphaned and vulnerable children

• Young men and young women

• People with disabilities

• Adult women and men

• The elderly

• The workplace- private and public companies and institutions

Thematic Areas

The organization currently provides integrated HIV and AIDS services in the thematic areas of Prevention, Care and Support, Treatment and Mitigation. The table below highlights key interventions under each thematic area;
