The 30-second audio clip had a bluesy music-hall feeling in the jazz-rock tradition of Steely Dan, with a vocal where the word "grotto" was not heard. Notes: This album is a modern tone poem dedicated to the sea, the waves, the sea breezes, and the whale. In Waves ? Part 1 the section entitled "Caves" consists of a simple melodic phrase repeated in overlapping rounds played consecutively on piano, alto & concert flute, and then on alto recorder. The rhythm is supplied by a 12-string echo guitar and the gloc bell tree. The melody here is extremely reminiscent of the all-too-familiar theme music of "Born Free" composed by John Barry. With its sweeping, breezy sounds of broad spaces the tune could easily suggest open sea but it hardly suggests anything to do with caves be they sea caves or undersea caves. The album received a 4-star rating from the Down Beat critic who feels that it "is likely their finest effort to date, an amalgam of beguiling, tame jazz and classical images which successfully avoids the confused attempts at grim posturing that spoiled their previous work." He classes the Jade Warrior's music with the groups belonging to "the grand school of soporifics" such as Pink Floyd, Mike Oldfield, and Terje Rypdal. Spec: (All LPs) 12" 33rpm (Sd 1 ? Bd 2) Notes: The allegorical lyrics speak of the silent message conveyed to modern man by the animal art of Paleolithic man in the Altamira Cave in Spain. The three stanzas and chorus are punctuated with short theme statements by a lively brass ensemble. Speaking in the first person, the verses tell how a youth rejects the busy world and goes with a candle to "hide inside a hall of rock and sand." There an "ancient hand" had brought to life on the stone wonders "often told but never seen." Then "...every man and beast appeared a friend as real as I." The third stanza ends on a contemplative note ?

Nothing here but history Can you see what has been done Memory rush over me Now I step into the sun The chorus itself is most interesting ? Before the fall When they wrote it on the wall When there wasn't even any Hollywood They heard the call And they wrote it on the wall For you and me we understood. For the full lyrics see under Rock Song Lyrics or at songmeanings. "The Steely Dan tradition of using sidemen whom they feel are more suited to a piece... dates back to the first LP... By the time of the 4th LP [Katy Lied ? 1975] the `group' ceased to exist, and from this point Steely Dan is basically Becker and Fagen & friends. They'd much rather spend the time and energy in the studio than go out on the road churning out attempts of the song that often take them months to manufacture." (Ray 1981) The 1976 Down Beat Reader's Poll voted Steely Dan as the second-best rock-blues group and this album won the fifth place in the rock-blues album category. Shown above is the Caves of Altamira T-shirt, which roughly reproduces some of Paleolithic paintings on the Altamira ceiling. One audio-video sample followed the lyrics and used two shots of the ceiling in the Altamira Cave plus many of the paintings in Lascaux Cave in France and a potpourri of many totally unrelated cave paintings of the Valltorta Gorge in eastern Spain, also of the Tassili n'Ajjer in the Sahara Desert of Algeria, and even those in South Africa. The video does manage to finish with a shot of the original gated entrance of the Altamira Cave. For another version of this song see under Jazz Music ? Smooth. For other music inspired by the Cueva de Altamira see also the Zsolt Durk?'s composition under Contemporary Art Music ? Modern ? Orchestral and the IBIO rock songs about the Altamira Cave under Progressive Rock.

Notes: "Steely Dan recorded a large number of demos between 1968-

1971 that have since become the fodder for an equally large number of

bootleg collections." A few of these "piano and vocal demos of middling

sonic quality" were completed and released. (McCombs, n.d.)

This is a straightforward duo rendition of the song that Becker and Fagen would later perform with full rock orchestra in 1976. This time Fagen sings just with piano accompaniment and Becker joins him on the chorus. The first verse of the chorus becomes ?

Was before the fall A new stanza is sung after the first chorus ?

Many years have come an' gone And many miles between Through it all I've found my way By the light of what I've seen. On the road as I return Was a green an' yellow sign Sayin' see the way it used to be An' I took my place in line. The word "Altamira" on the jacket and on the label of the original LP got misspelled as "Altramira." There were other albums, also entitled "Sun Mountain," released by Steely Dan that do not include "Caves of Altamira." The Altamira bison postcard shows the 2015 commemorative 2 Euros coin that was issued in the Spanish Patrimonio Mundial series. Two other pieces used this music: a soul music rendition by Perri in 1988 (see below) and a house special mix by E-Man in 2001 (see below). Notes: The four Perri sisters from California give Fagen and Becker's original lyrics a soul treatment and for the chorus the endverse words "Hollywood" and "understood" are repeated, bringing a decidedly gospel feel to the song. MICHAEL MOOG CLUB MIX ? there is a long drum machine intro, then a voice sings ? "For you an' me... It's time to say..." followed by a guitar solo of the theme. Stanzas 1, 2, and 4 are sung with the chorus repeated twice (see Rock Song Lyrics) and a brass ensemble bridge before and after stanza 4. Then the voice comes back with ? `I remember when I was small/ The writing was on the wall/ For you and me we understood." The chorus is again repeated twice and the verse ? "For you and me we understood" sung three times. A long guitar solo together with an organ repeating three chords over and over blends into the incessant drum tracks with electronic bibs to the fade. MICHAEL MOOG DUB ? Has the same insistent drum machine tracks with the three repeated chords on organ. Finally, halfway through the guitar does the theme then it's back to the same old rhythm track until the fade. MICHAEL MOOG RADIO EDIT ? The melody on keyboards with the rhythm track. Stanzas 1, 2, and 4 are sung with the chorus repeated twice and a brass ensemble bridge before and after stanza 4. The verse ? "For you and me we understood" sung three times followed by the guitar solo to the fade. Two shorter selections of the Michael Moog Club Remix were released: a 6:38 version on the American compilation, The Soulful House Experience, and an 8:38 version on the British compilation, D?j? vu ? Those Nervous Tracks. A much-abbreviated selection of one of these cuts (3:32) was provided on the United DJs of America CD compilations ? a 30-second audio clip of this (no longer online) provided the chorus of the song and the bridge where a brass ensemble performs the theme. "Caveman is Raw, High Energy, Mystical Instrumental Earth Music that is going to make you so happy you will never want to return from the ice jeweled cave." (Anon 1 n.d.) Talking about the group another critic said ? "Caveman combines elements of interplanetary rock, psycho blues, and kamikaze jazz with tribal music of Africa, India, Ireland, Brazil, and the Middle East." (Anon.2 n.d.)
