HoeppnerResolution Honoring the Life, Works, and Legacy of U.S. Congressman John Robert LewisWHEREAS, the Whitewater Student Government (WSG) serves all students attending the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (UW-Whitewater); and,RECOGNIZING, John Robert Lewis was a key Civil Rights Leader, of a movement which was directly responsible for the civil rights acts of 1957, 1960, 1964, 1965, and 1968 respectively, which lead to the end of employment discrimination, descrimination in housing and public accommodations, legal segregation, and enfranchised millions of Black Americans; and,RECOGNIZING, John Lewis was a founder and Chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), a national organization aimed at increasing student participation in the Civil Rights Movement; and,RECOGNIZING, As Chairman of the SNCC, Lewis was named one of the “Big 6” Leaders, who were responsible for organizing the historic March on Washington in 1963, which gathered some 250,000 protesters, rallied by the cause of freedom, demanding equality and ensuring that black voices were heard by a government deaf to the needs and suffering of the Black Community; and, RECOGNIZING, John Lewis led the Selma to Montgomery marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, aiming to enfranchise millions of black voters who had unjustly been denied their most fundamental right, to vote and take part in the democracy in which they lived; and, RECOGNIZING, During the Selma to Montgomery marches, John Lewis’s skull was fractured by Alabama Police, sent to stifle the protests, despite this, Lewis would go on to be arrested at least 45 times in his advocacy for civil rights and people of color; and,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, The Whitewater Student Government honors John Lewis for inspiring millions of Americans to stand up for justice, even if it requires great sacrifice; and,THEREFORE, BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, and henceforth let it be known, that the Whitewater Student Government forever recognizes and honors the life, works, and legacy of Congressman John Robert Lewis. 306705076771500AYES__14________ PASS__________________NAYS__0________ FAIL___________________ABSTENTIONS__________ DATE_7/26/2020_________TABLED UNTIL__________ 166687525590500PRESIDENT JOHANNA WENTWORTH________________________________________________CLERK SABRINA JURICISIN_________________________________________________________ ................
