Congratulation to Karion Gray Waites, DNP MSN FNP-BC CRRN is ARN President-Elect for 2017.

Marsha Tudor BSN RN CRRN has accepted the office of AARN President-Elect 2017

Remember: If you have some news to share, send to Karion, waites@uabmc.edu, so that we can celebrate with you.

The holiday season between Thanksgiving and the New Year is well known for peace, joy, sharing and gratitude. All of these components are included in the profession of nursing. We as nurses provide patient care involving all these elements throughout our tenure in practice. A famous nursing theorist, Dr. Jean Watson said that nursing is “a caring profession”. The act of nursing is not just to perform tasks. It is about providing holistic care to our patients. According to Val Saintsbury, “Nurses dispense comfort, compassion, and caring without a prescription”. These attributes of the nursing profession makes it different from other professions. For, there is no other profession that is highly multi-task oriented like nursing.

As you experience the holidays, I wish you the warm feelings of accomplishment and satisfaction that arise from knowing that you are a nurse. And, as a nurse you are making a positive contribution to patients, to families, and to your profession. Finally, I would like to thank all of you for providing me with continuous support this year. Without the support given by many, AARN would not have been able to have a successful year.

Season Greetings,

Karion

The Newsletter of the Alabama Chapter of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses

November 23, 2016

Volume 16, Issue 3

Volume 13, Issue 2

I wondered how I would begin this editorial and to start I would say the trip was awesome!!! North Carolina is a beautiful state; my flight was good as well. The taxi cab driver, after arriving to the small yet clean and spotless airport, was standing by the car waiting for me. I was impressed needless to say. The conference was not lacking in any area. I understood the topic of Surfing the changing Tides: The beach resort Blockade Runner was a wonderful place to stay. The plus was not only the fact that we were literally on the beach, but the buffet breakfast of eggs, grits, bacon, sausage, oatmeal, fruit, granola and your choice of beverage that was served every morning. The other portion of the topic was “Embracing the Future of Rehabilitation”. Rehabilitation as defined by the Oxford online dictionary as the action of restoring someone to health or normal life through training and therapy. Here are few points that were given per speaker that stood out for me:

1. Preparing Nurses for the 21st Century Rehab speaker Kathy Doeschot BSN, MSN

▪ Nurse training and education should be practiced to its full extension.

▪ Higher education and training should be achieved by nurses to promote academic progression

▪ To redesign healthcare in the US nurses should partner with physicians and other disciplines of the medical field.

2. TBI (traumatic brain injury) in the Military Populace - speaker Julie Minic-Castro MSN, RNC, ANP-C FNP-C

Damaged brain tissue caused by an external force (TBI). Brain injury can be caused by trauma to the head it can be either a penetrating or non-penetrating force. A person can remain conscious or become unconscious. Unconsciousness temporarily caused by a blow to the head is called a concussion

Military specific TBI: (relevant to TBI on unit)

• Blast-Combat related to an explosion or bomb

• Jump (Parachute)

• Combative (Training)

Post-concussion: Symptoms are cognitive, psychologic and physical impairment. This is what we experience on a daily basis on the TBI unit and should be more cognizant of signs and symptoms and how to treat each patient. What was vital about this topic is, and was is that your head is extremely important and should be protected from any and all types of trauma if possible. The wearing of a helmet is of the essence during military training. It is the same for the civilian riding a bike, motorcycle, playing sports and making sure seatbelt s are fastened when riding in a motor vehicle.

3. The Professional Rehabilitation - Nurse’s Role as Patient Educator –

Stephanie Davis Burnett RN, DNP, ACNS-BC, CRRN

First a new word I learned to help widened my vocabulary was

Pedagogy - the art & science of teaching.

Every day we are teaching someone something, therefore we must learn in order to teach and be affective with our teaching, so that we may infect someone with knowledge thereby integrating and promoting preventive complications as well as maximum safety and independence. Also nurses must be led by evidenced based interventions to promote healthy and successful living.

Maintaining Mental Health during the Holidays

As the holiday season kicks into high gear many people start to feel stressed and overwhelmed. I thought I’d suggest a few tips for maintaining mental health in the weeks ahead.

□ Do something good for others: Being altruistic means helping others or doing good without focusing on recognition or reward for yourself. Even though the point of altruistic behavior is focusing on others, research suggests that people who are more altruistic receive all sorts of physical and mental health benefits

□ Do something good for yourself: Make certain that in the flurry of activity and commitments that usually accompany the holiday season, you don’t neglect yourself. I am not contradicting the above point. But, if you don’t take care of yourself, you are likely to crash and burn.

□ Laugh: Individuals with a greater sense of humor are more cheerful and have a higher self-esteem. Humor can help to minimize the importance of stressful experiences.

□ Eat with moderation and don’t beat yourself up: Eating a hearty holiday meal of traditional dishes is something that many of us look forward to. Go ahead and enjoy yourself.

□ Exercise: It’s tempting to skip exercising, But, exercising is a great way to compensate for the extra calories that you have consumed. In addition, exercise is a great stress buster

□ Sleep: Don’t cut back on sleep during the holidays. One of the fastest ways to run yourself into the ground is to decrease your sleep during the holidays. Sleep allows our bodies to repair and refresh, and prepare for the coming day.

□ Pretend you are a kid again: Think back to your childhood. What activities kindled feelings of excitement and joy in the season? Decorate some cookies, grab a cup of hot chocolate, or watch a favorite holiday movie

□ Say No: If you are overextended and run down, try to practice your assertiveness skills. Remember, it’s better to do a few things well rather than to do everything poorly
