Career Technical Education at Jacksonville State UniversityIn the state of Alabama, the demand for a quality workforce is at a critical level with an expected 500 thousand jobs that will need to be filled by a qualified workforce in the very near future. Career Technical Education (CTE) is in the forefront to help fill the demands. One of critical shortage areas that Alabama faces is the shortage of qualified teachers. Once again CTE has the answer. The Career Technical Education program at JSU prepares students to become leaders in the field of Career Technical Education. Students in Family and Consumer Sciences Education and Business Marketing Education programs must meet state mandated course work requirements along with 200 clock hours of observation before entering their internship semester. Student receive a strong education background in both their general and concentration course work, but they also receive quality instruction on how to become leaders in their professional areas by networking in their professional organizations like the Alabama Association for Career Technical Education and the Alabama Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. Student also take an active role in developing a knowledge base of the Career Technical Student Organizations related to their subject areas. For example, Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCS Education) and Future Business Leaders of America (Business Marketing Education). Academics paired with real world application is just a part of the CTE experience for students. Leadership development along with professional networking can give students countless opportunities. CTE has a way of making students feel accomplished and gives them a place to thrive and belong.
