Antacid and Water: An Acid Reflux SimulationIntroductionAlka-Seltzer is an antacid that is often taken to subdue the effects of acid reflux. The Alka-Seltzer tablet works by reacting with stomach acid. This reaction reduces the amount of acid in the stomach which alleviates symptoms. Today, you will imitate the reaction that occurs when an antacid, like Alka-Seltzer, is ingested in the human body. Instead of acid you will be using water because it has the same effect. You will drop differing amounts of antacid tablets into water and measure the temperature change caused from this reaction.Materials1 BeakerAntacid Tablets100 mL WaterProcedure1. Have one person from your group obtain 100.0mL of water from the sink. Take the beaker of water back to your lab station.2. Have another person from your group record the initial temperature of the water in the data table. Keep the thermometer in the water.3. You are now ready to begin your trial. Make sure your thermometer is in the solution. Add the selected number of antacid tablets to the solution. Wait until the reaction stops and record the final temperature in your data table.4. Record your findings in the table on your paper and on the board.5. When finished, clean up your lab area and work on the post-lab questions by yourself. ................
