2020 SCOPE CLASS SUMMARIES1,000 Piece Puzzle Race (2 teams) (grades 3-8): Think you’ve got what it takes to finish a 1,000 piece puzzle with your team over 4 days?? Come up with a strategy and solve the puzzle before the other team does!After School Snack Attack (grades 3-6): Are you tired of eating the same boring snacks? In this class, we’ll use many recipes ranging from sweet to savory to satisfy every after school craving. You will learn all aspects of working with food, including cleaning, safety, and preparation.Arm/Finger Knitting (grades 4-10):? Come and learn to arm knit and finger knit.Art Journaling (grades 3-5, 6-10): Use your artistic skills to explore the idea of combining imagery with colors and words. Students will create a journal of art work to keep for a life time! ?ASL (American Sign Language) (grades 3-10): Are you interested in learning American Sign Language? ASL is the dominant language of the deaf community in the US. Sign Language Interpreters with USD 259 will teach us basic signs and simple phrases. We might even learn a song to sing for parents on Thursday.Bead Craft Creations (grades 6-10 ): Come learn how to make beautiful beaded jewelry and other beaded crafts!Beginning Robotics (grades 3–5): We will use Lego? Robotics NXT kits and software to create robots and program them to accomplish a variety of challenges and tasks. This class is for students who have never used Lego? Robotics software.Board Games (grades 3-10): Board games that involve strategy and critical thinking skills will be available for students to learn and play. Games included: Boggle, CODA, LCR, Checkers, Blink, 500+ piece puzzles, and more. Board Game Design (grades 3-5): Every board game, from Monopoly to Ticket to Ride, has a designer behind it. Now is your chance to create your own game. Plan, design, and even create a prototype for the next board game sensation. Use other board games as a source of inspiration, or create something completely original.Book Publishing (grades 3-10): Do you love to read? How about write? In this class you get to do both. Mystery? Fantasy? Comedy? The genre is up to you. . Say bye-bye to writers block, and get those pencils ready. The publishers are waiting. On-line ordering steps will be provided.Break-it Make-It? (grades 5-10): Repurpose an existing item using broken dishes and chinaware into a new and unique piece of decorative?art.? [Students will need to bring their own wooden form (size not to exceed 8 x 10 inches, Hobby Lobby and Walmart have these, as well as some Dollar General stores), all other supplies and materials will be provided.]Break-Out Boxes (grades 3-10): Put your problem solving skills to the test! It is designed to help you get your heart racing while doing different high intensity activities that include learning basic kickboxing techniques. Cardio workouts help the body handle stress and anxiety. Create some endorphins and be happy!!Chess (grades 3-5): Learn the world’s greatest strategy game. Participants will learn how to play CHESS: set up a board, how each piece moves, strategies, the three phases of the game, and the objective - placing an opponent in checkmate. We will have practice games and play a tournament against similar skill-level opponents.Chess (grades 6-10): Participants will practice their CHESS strategies against other tacticians playing the greatest strategy game on Earth. We will have competitions and tournaments of CHESS. There will be a tournament utilizing brackets with a double-elimination format as participants compete to win the SCOPE WEEKLY CHESS TOURNAMENT.Chopped Jr. (grades 6-10): Split into teams and compete daily to win the title of Chopped Jr. Champions! It seems an abandoned house in a sleepy little town may not be so abandoned after all. Engineering Challenges (grades 3-6): Students will use a given number of items to engineer the best possible. (Tower/Barge/Cantilever/Ramp) They can use logic and hands-on strategies. Students will then test their items for height, strength, length and distance traveled. Exploring the Middle Ages (grades 3-5): Learn about the Middle Ages in Europe through hands-on activities and projects.Exploring Ancient Egypt (grades 3-5): Learn about the fascinating lives of ancient Egyptians through hands-on activities and projects.Fairy Tales on Trial (grades 3-10): If you are interested in the justice system, come put your favorite fairy tales on trial! (These are the same projects as last year.)Identity Shadow Box (grades 3-10): Can you fit your identity into a box? Who are you, and what “things” represent who you are? In this class you will learn about artists, create self-portraits, and study symbolism. Using these concepts you will create your own identity box that holds hand-made or creative symbols that represent who you are!iMovie (grades 3-10): Come join our movie mania! Learn how to create a short movie on an iPad using iMovie. We will learn basic editing and how to find copyright-free resources for our movies.Intermediate Robotics (grades 6-10): This class is for experienced EV3 Lego? Robotics users. We will take Robotics and Programming to the next level. You will spend time collaborating on how to best make a robot. Jewelry (grades 3-10): Creating your own jewelry can be fun for so many reasons--not only do you get to tap into your creative side, you also have the chance to make something completely unique that reflects your personal style.Lateral Thinking Challenges / "Stories with Holes" (grades 3-6): Think Outside the Box!! Students use questioning techniques and listening skills to work together to decipher word puzzles from a given scenario.Magic Tricks (grades 3-5): Amaze and entertain your friends and family with mind-bending tricks and illusions.Mindfulness Meditation (grades 3-10): ATTENTION!! Do you find it hard to pay attention and focus at school, sports, or a million things going on at once? What would happen if you stopped, and noticed the moment you are in right now? In mindful meditation class you will learn games and techniques to help you relax, focus, and pay attention to what you are feeling at the moment you feel it. In turn this will help you achieve goals at home or at school!Minecraft (grades 3-5): Do you want to learn how to play Minecraft? If so, then this class is for you! We will spend the first and second days of class learning how to move, mine, build, and craft. The third and fourth days will be spent mining resources and building a shelter. This class is for students with no experience playing Minecraft.Minecraft Intermediate (grades 6-10): In this class, students will create and build a house based on the requirements and parameters decided upon by the class, using Minecraft. On Thursday, students will have the opportunity to tour the houses in their world. In our world, animals are permitted, but no monsters. This class is for students who know how to play the game. Minecraft (grades 3-10): Experienced students will participate in Minecraft activities. This class is not for beginners. Minute to Win It (grades 3-6): Students will learn body awareness and practice coordination using logic and speed while completing a variety of fun and silly tasks. Papier-mache’ (grades 3-10): Use your own creativity to create papier-mache’ pi?atas, piggy banks, masks, and other items.Plastic Canvas Sewing (grades 3-10): Did you know that you can build 3d objects while you sew? With plastic canvas, you can! Come create 3D objects like houses, cars, and anything you can imagine while sewing with plastic canvas and yarn.Puzzles (grades 3-10): Come relax and solve puzzles. Puzzle sizes range from 200 pieces to 1000. Silhouette Studio (grades 6-10): Join us as we design, cut, and paint wooden signs using a Silhouette Cameo machine and digitizing software. Students will have the opportunity to personalize their signs. Slime Making (grades 3-5): Who doesn’t LOVE slime?! Join us in Slime Making for some ooey gooey fun! We are going to make a unique slime each day of class. Best part is you get to take it home! You won’t want to miss it. Splatter Art (grades 3-10): If you like to make a mess, this is the class for you.? Come paint the town with anything and everything except a paint brush. At the end of the week you might even find a fossil you can eat! 2nd grade:Week 1: Simple Machines: Students will learn simple machines are all around them. Come to this class to collaborate, experiment and create your own machines. Week 2: Pond: Explore the life cycle of a frog and the food chain, while learning about the community of pond plants and animals.Week 3: Travel to Oregon: Keep a diary and come with us as we plan a trip in a covered wagon in 1870. ................
