March's Business Meeting

Reported by Jason Rothgeb and Tony Wootson

At April's meeting there will be auction of John Delasandro's model collection. Included will be new model airplane kits, airplane kits that are half way finished, metal aircraft, model car kits, paint, aviation magazines and books. There are around seven LARGE boxes that are filled with kits and miscellaneous model related material, including decals and aftermarket sets.

Additional items for sale are a worktable (with dimensions 30" by 50" by 40" in height), a Magna light and a stool. The asking price for all three is $70.00.

Again, be sure to bring some extra money with you to our April meeting.

The budget for the coming year has been completed. The club will have a surplus for the year and the budget is available for review.

The IPMS National will be held on July 31st through August 3rd in Virginia Beach.

At the March meeting there were three individuals displaying for the first time.

We will be sponsoring a trophy package for both Mosquito Con and the MFCA Show.

Jim Rosado has room for two additional passengers for the trip down to this year's AMPS Show. (See Jim).

Vinnie B. is looking for a roommate and someone to split the room's expenses with at this year's MFCA Show. Vinnie will be holed-up at the Valley Forge Convention Center from Wednesday, May 1st, (for the painting seminar that's taking place), through Saturday, May 3rd. If interested, please see Vince.

Wayne B. announced that Ron Yesner has been very ill recently. The club will be sending him something to try to cheer him up.

For those unaware, John Rucks passed away on

March 20th. He had a heart attack while sleeping. His presence and guiding influence within the club, along with the enthusiasm he brought to the hobby will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace, John.

Additional News and Updates

The Remaining portion of March's Meeting

Following our business meeting, Craig conducted the raffle. Jim Rosado then presented the first part of his three-part series on Basic Diorama Construction.

Jim showed some very straightforward, easy to follow steps in which common home repair supplies can be used in the construction of a diorama scene.

He used a diorama that had already been started.

Jim did such things as apply some Elmars Wood Glue to a styrofoam rear wall, along with showing how to use this glue to continue a tank's track patterns in "mud" on the constructed road.

This was another interesting clinic that was conducted.

The East Coast Hobby Show - The Make & Take It that just wouldn't go away, the IPMS Contest, Iwata's airbrushing demos and the Show's Vendors

By the time you read this, this year's East Coast Hobby Show will be a (distant?) memory.

As fate would have it, Scott Pressman (the organizer of the event) ended up convincing us to conduct a Make & Take It program after all. He was (at the very last minute) able to obtain around 500 models kits - 250 Spirit of St. Louis plane kits from Testors, along with 250 very old - (ANCIENT, poor fitting) - car kits of various types, dating back to 1953 (from Minicraft).

Due to a number of factors, the model-building program only took place during the Sunday show.

Those who conducted it were: Jim Durso, Amadeo Delosrios, Dave Garbern, John Walton, Joe Turowski, Fred Bowers and his son Joshua.

I’d like to personally thank all those who helped out, especially since they stepped forward to assist even though they were asked at the very last minute.

In addition to the M&TI, Jack Smith (from the NE PA IPMS Chapter) was on hand conducting the annual IPMS Contest that takes place there. Jim Rosado lent a helping hand.

This contest was by FAR the BEST ONE TO TAKE PLACE at the ECHS yet!

There were over 300 models entered! In addition, the workmanship of the kits was very high!

It was interesting that the majority of those who entered models were not IPMS members - many had never even heard of the organization.

Joe Baxter, Joe Smith and I conducted airbrushing demonstrations for Iwata that Saturday, Sunday and Monday - (by Joe B.). I don’t know about the other two, but I HAD A BLAST! (I had sooooo much fun and talked sooooo much that I ended up loosing my voice - it's just now returning).

Other plastic model kit related Vendors who were on hand were MicroScale, Hebco (the Tenax-7R Plastic Welder makers), Eduard, Red Star, WoodlandScenics, Badger, Alclad II and the GK Company MonstersinMotion). As is apparent from this list, this year's show was Severely Lacking in model kit coverage from the plastic kit manufacturers. Tamiya wasn't even in attendance this year - (they instead opted to attend some new trade show that also took place on that weekend, down in Georgia).

All in all, this year's ECSH was still an enjoyable event... (and I have the pics to prove it). I'll be writing a "slightly" more extensive article on this year's show. It, along with the supplementing pics will be incorporated into an article that'll be posted on the web. In addition, I may include it in next month's Newsletter.

A New IPMS Chapter in Town!??

Several weeks ago on Friday, March 8th a new Modeling Club met for the first time. They met at M&G Hobbies. Kevin Titus is the club's organizer.

There were a very decent number of folks on hand, probably between 15 and 20. There were a lot of familiar faces, (members from both Del Val and Central Jersey), along with several new guys in attendance as well.

What most impressed me about both the club and Kevin was the emphasis placed on getting kids into building.

Kevin brought his two sons to the meeting. In addition, Jim R. was there with his daughter and niece. There were also 2 or 3 other kids floating around.

Kevin shared a story with us about how his first memory pertaining to model building included his father, (who recently passed away). What Kevin would like to do is establish these same types of memories with his two sons.

This is just what I've been looking for personally for my two sons and myself. (I'm going to start bringing them with me beginning next month).

The next meeting takes place on Friday, April 12, beginning at 7 pm (again at M&G Hobbies).

Those attending are requested to bring a model or two to show, along with name suggestions for the club.

For more information, Kevin can be reached by phone at (609) 876-4596 or by email at krtitus124@.

Web News

I've made a number of additions to Del Val's Web Site.

I've posted mucho pics from our March meeting. They can be found at: 2002MarchMeeting.html.

Jamie Makin has revamped and beefed up her article on her "Model Car Polishing Technique." It has been posted at: JamiesModelCarPolishingTechniqueUpdate.html.

I've uncovered - (discovered, while cleaning my modeling room) - the notes from a clinic on "Basic Model Aircraft Construction" that John Goschke conducted a number of years ago. John has cleaned it up a bit and I've posted it at: JohnGsBasicModelAircraftConstruction.html

Found below is Jim's "PACM News." Following this are Keith Jones' notes from his "Weathering 101for Cars" clinic that he conducted at our February meeting.

PACM News

Reported by Jim Durso

When March arrives, we start thinking how springtime is so close. Well the models were definitely in bloom this month - so much that we had to add another table to display them all. With Nascar season here, the Nascar theme brought out enough models to make up our own starting grid.

Interesting, related material was also on display, including newspaper articles, books and mementos.

Neil Blanchet, who's from Delaware, visited us. Many of you have already seen his big & little car collection. Neil gave us a little insight into what to expect to see when we start visiting him again. He has graciously given us, for the most part, an open invitation to see his collection. Wyatt is the contact person for these trips.

Ariel brought in a sample of how the Alclad II chrome paint looks when applied properly. If you missed his workshop (held at his house), this month's Model Cars magazine has an article on how to use this incredible product.

Ariel also showed some parts he cast with the Smooth-on resin kit. The stuff looks great; crisp and clean. Log on to smooth- to get their sampler starter kit at a reduced price.

The Make It Take It at M&G Hobby is scheduled for April 27. A sign up sheet for participants is in the store, so as it gets closer to the date, we'll know who's coming and how much help we need. There is an in-store model contest in the works for early October at M&G also.

Meanwhile, Jenkintown Hobby has scheduled a model contest instead of an MITI for June 23, to coincide with the Jenkintown car show. All subject matter is welcome.

Don't forget the spring Christian Cruisers car show/model show is on for May 18 at 1pm. Please come out and show

your model cars and help in manning the display area.

Of course the big news is the upcoming NNL in Parsippany on Saturday, March 23. This year's theme is cars with animal names; sub-theme is pickups. Last year's first time attendees from DVSM were awe struck and are looking forward to a return trip. This is an event that warrants extreme measures in getting there, so birthdays, weddings, surgeries, will all have to wait. Bring money and a camera.

The animals theme from the NNL will be carried over to the theme for April's DVSM meeting. Budget your NNL allowance to bring some reserve $$'s to April's meeting because there will be a major auction of kits from the estate of late member John Dalessandro. We don't know how many automotive kits will be available, but there should be a sufficient amount to warrant some interest.

Any comments or suggestions concerning John Rucks' proposal for a monthly mini-con should be directed to contest chairman, Dennis Levy. With a little tweaking, it could work out to be an interesting concept.

Many of you also like the idea of an award or mention for the best representation of each month's theme. Again, direct your comments to the contest chairman.

Tony M's model index site has moved to .

Hobby Heaven's site has some very interesting links to mode & reference sites.

Until next week and next month, "Honor the timely classics",..rather..." Don't crush them, restore them." no wait, "Build them, don't just collect them."

Weathering 101 For Cars

February 1, 2002

by Keith Jones

Oxidized Paint

1. Spray Testor’s Dull Coat over glossy finish.

2. Spray lacquer-based paint on humid day.

3. Spray body with flat finish.

Old Chrome

1. Spray chrome with Testor’s Dull Coat

Easy Rust

1. Spray body with red oxide paint.

2. After it dries, dab rubber cement with a green scrubbing pad.

3. Apply cement to areas that rust on real cars – top of fenders, roof, rocker panels, wheel wells, etc.

4. After rubber cement dries, spray body with glossy or flat color.

5. After top coat of paint dries, rub off the rubber cement, rust color will appear through top coats of paint

Easy Rust II

1. Spray body with red oxide paint.

2. Spray glossy or flat paint over red oxide.

3. Lightly sand topcoat with fine (e.g. 2400 grit) sandpaper until red oxide appears.

4. Try not to sand through red oxide.

Peeling paint (e.g. late 1980’s Fords)

1. Spray body with gray primer paint

2. After it dries, dab rubber cement with a green scrubbing pad.

3. After rubber cement tries, spray body with glossy or flat color.

4. After top coat of paint dries, rub off the rubber cement, primer will appear through top coats of paint

Faded paint

1. Spray body with gray primer paint.

2. Spray glossy or flat paint over gray primer.

3. Lightly sand topcoat with fine (e.g. 2400 grit) sandpaper until primer appears.

4. Try not to sand through red oxide.

Dirt/grime

1. Spray part with base color paint (e.g. spray chassis flat black).

2. While part is still wet, sprinkle baking powder on part with saltshaker.

3. Blow or shake off excess powder.

4. Apply second coat of paint.

Water based washes

Advantage: won’t affect lacquer or enamel base paint.

Grimy wash

2 parts Polly Scale Grimy Black (414137)

3 parts tap water with

A drop of dishwashing detergent (breaks surface tension, allows better penetration of wash).

Apply where you want patina of dirt – chassis, tires, wheel wells, exposed interiors, etc.

Oily wash

2 parts Polly Scale Oily Black (414326)

3 parts tap water

A drop of dish-washing detergent

Apply where you want oil leaks – engine, transmission, and differential.

An alternative to flat black

Testor’s Model Master Aircraft Interior Black (37031)

Much better than flat black for resin tires, fan belts, worn rubber mats, etc.

Pastels

1. Shave with knife blade onto cardboard.

2. Brush on.

3. Spraying with Dull coat both cuts down on intensity of pastel and preserves surfaces that may be touched.

4. Less is more!

In Memoriam

We at DVSM are deeply saddened at the sudden passing of one of our "Old Guard," John Rucks.

John was a tireless promoter of our hobby with an encyclopedic knowledge of its history. He was also a dynamic force in our club, constantly working to advance the club's status and improve it for all members.

John's company, Combat Models, set the standard for vacu-form kits. No aircraft was too obscure to be a subject for a Combat Models' kit.

John served his country with distinction, voluntarily joining the U.S. Army and seeing action in the Viet Nam War.

Most importantly, John was a genuinely kind and generous person who was a pleasure to be with and of whom it was an honor to be considered his friend.

Many people in our hobby lost a friend last week, not only in our club, but in the other clubs that John belonged to: Scale Model Enthusiasts, New Jersey IPMS, and IPMS USA.

We will all miss you.

Farewell, John Rucks, gone west.

- John Chionchio and John Goschke
