|XIII. |TEACHING METHODS |

| |A. |Methods to achieve course objectives: |

| | |Technical and aesthetic lectures |

| | |Slides, video, CD and internet presentations |

| | |Group and individual critiques |

| | |Class discussions |

| | |Laboratory demonstrations |

| | |Written assignments |

| | |Field trips |

| | |Guest lecturers |

| |B. |Typical assignments used in achieving learner independence and critical thinking: |

| | |Given problematical visual and technical tasks, each student is required to delineate the steps needed to resolve each problem and/or obtain |

| | |the prescribed results |

| | |Each student is required to participate in class and individual critiques of photographic work where they will compare and contrast both |

| | |photographic style and technique |

|XIV. |TEXTBOOKS AND OTHER READINGS (Typical) |

| |A. |Required texts: |

| | |London & Stone. (2003) A Short Course In Photography. (5th ed.). Harper Collins Publishers |

ART 170   Basic Photography

| |B. |Other readings: |

| | |In an early assignment, the student will make several photographs of their favorite person, place and object using light as an expressive |

| | |element to enhance their intent and visual effect of their photograph. The student is required to make several contact sheets and |

| | |enlargements with appropriate density and contrast. This assignment is to reinforce the class discussions and demonstrations about the |

| | |importance of lighting to all photographs regardless of subject and to make the student plan and design photographs comparing different |

| | |lighting characteristics on their subjects. It also requires them to demonstrate their skills in exposure of film and print enlargement. |

| | | |

| | |After the class discussion and presentation of examples of Modernist and Surrealist theories and photographs, students must make 4 |

| | |photographs demonstrating an understanding of the two concepts. One of the photographs must be made using an alternative printing technique |

| | |such as negative printing, montage, or solarization. This assignment enhances the students’ ability to recognize and analyze certain styles |

| | |important to the art of photography and to apply their knowledge to individual creative deicision-making related to visual expression. It |

| | |also requires the student to demonstrate the use of one alternative printing technique. |
