Course Syllabus

Course Content:

This is a 10-credit course designed for students interested in continuing studies of the art of traditional black and white photography and an introduction to digital photography. The course emphasizes a review of the basic procedures of photographic image making, film and print processing, presentation, and critical analysis. Photographic compositions, the principles of the camera and film, and the history of photography are also covered. Additionally, this course covers continued, advanced, and alternative techniques in the uses of the camera, accessories and darkroom techniques. Students will maintain a physical and digital portfolio containing a series of original photographic artworks consisting of various pieces as assigned, critiqued as completed, and kept as a body of work for presentation at midterm and culmination of the course. A photo- journal of reflective writing, technical notation, and critique will also be maintained. The components in the portfolio and photo-journal will be graded individually and periodically and as a cumulative body of work. Advanced students will be expected to keep a detailed journal of darkroom notes as a reference tool to aid in mastering detailed assignments.

The course is designed to meet the California Visual and Performing Arts Framework. This class covers the 5 components of Discipline Based Art Education as stated in the California State Standards Framework:

Aesthetic Valuing, Artistic, Perception/Criticism, Production/Creative Expression, Historical/Cultural Context, Connections/Applications.

Course Requirements:

Your final grade in this course, which will consist of a total of 100 possible points, will be broken down into 3 categories weighted accordingly:

33% - Portfolio

33% -Tests, quizzes, and assignments

33% - Shooting journal/ Photo Journal

Grade Scale:

A = 90 and above

B = 80 – 89

C = 70 – 79

D = 60 – 69

Homework and Classwork Policies:

Homework will be assigned as necessary. It will most often consist of photographic assignments you fulfill with your camera. These may also be worked on in class when appropriate. At times links to online articles will be given as assigned readings. Students will be expected to read the information either at home or in the school library in order to participate in class discussion and take quizzes.

Class work will consist of readings from the texts and supplemental readings, entries in the photo journal, participation in class discussions, quizzes, demonstrations, lab work, and critiques.

Students will be given one week to make up work when absent. Please see teacher immediately following an absence. It will be the students’ responsibility to hand in make-up work.

• Beverly Hills High School rules apply in Photography Class. Please refer to the Student Handbook.

• Clean up time starts ten minutes before the end of the period.

• You will work in groups at times, please be respectful of others’ work and helpful to your group members.

• Due to the nature of this course, students will be expected to pace themselves in order to complete lengthy projects at times. Periodic critiques and check-ups will take place to help students stay on course.

• Students will remain in their assigned seats at all times beginning at the tardy bell until the end of class unless otherwise instructed.

• Students will be expected to be engaged in one of the activities required in this course at all times during class. (laboratory, readings, worksheet activities, portfolio production, diary responses, lectures, and demonstrations)

All students in Photography classes will be expected to adhere to all rules, regulations and school policies of Beverly Hills Unified School District.

Materials List *

• One box of your choice for making a pinhole camera (yes, we will make another pinhole camera in this class)

• 35mm single lens reflex camera (capable of operating in manual mode). Camera must be in good working order with fresh batteries and include the owner’s manual.

• Digital camera- a point and shoot will work.

• Apron, smock, large old shirt (photo chemicals stain clothing) * optional

• Pencil box or small art supply box to store small items

• 2 or 3 black fine and large point Sharpies@

• Several colored markers or pens to design photo journal

• Mars plastic eraser

• Composition book for use as photo journal.

• 2 inch, three ring binder to contain portfolio

• Package of 50 sheet protectors

• Package of glue sticks (5 or 6)

• One pair of small blunt end scissors

• One China Marker

• Package of 25 (35mm) negative sleeves

• (5) rolls 100 ISO Kodak TMAX 35mm black and white film

• (5) rolls 400 ISO Kodak TMAX 35mm black and white film

• (1) roll Kodak Infrared film. (do not purchase until assigned)

• Compressed air or negative brush for cleaning negatives

• One 8x10, 50-sheet Package of Ilford( brand, black and white photographic paper. Paper must be (glossy or pearl), RC, and Polycontrast. Please purchase the package that contains a set of free contrast filters valued at approx. $40.00. This package is a very good value and these filters will be very important to your success in producing high quality photographs. (If you already have a set of filters you may just purchase a package of the paper of your choice.)

• One small (25 sheet) package of Fiber-based (FB) paper

• Small package Photo paper for digital inkjet printer (your choice of texture)

• Ten 11x14 mat boards for mounting photos (black on one side, white on the other)

• Various size and color boards as needed for mounting larger size prints

• One package Dry Mount Tissue (25 sheets)

• One package adhesive photo corners for mounting pictures

* Underlined materials will need to be purchased at a store that supplies photographic material.

* Many of you will already have some of these materials, so purchase only what you need.

* To get started just make sure you have the basics. You can buy specific supplies as needed.

* It will be necessary to replenish paper, film and other consumable materials as needed.
