Relevant Question: “How is Jesus a Savior we can touch?”

1) He is our Comforter [v14]

2) He is our High Priest [v17]

3) He is our Lord [v18]

1) Explain the difference between crying and weeping.

_____________________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________________

← Sermon > Crying is about something you physically want, and when you get it, you stop crying. Weeping, on the other hand, has to do with the condition of the spirit. Weeping is the mourning (grief) of a bruised spirit and/or a wounded or broken heart.

2) According to the sermon, as our Comforter, Jesus is both ___________ and __________ .

A] Available and Accessible.

B] Approachable and Touchable.

C] Reliable and Trustworthy.

D] Faithful and Dependable.

[E] All of the Above.

← Sermon > B – Approachable and Touchable. As our Comforter, Jesus is both approachable and touchable. Christ moves from being our earthly Prophet to becoming our heavenly High Priest. As our High Priest, Jesus is touchable, but not before ascending to the Father.

3) What does Mary do when Jesus calls her name?

_____________________________________________________________________________

← Sermon > Mary immediately recognized Jesus’ voice. With just one word, “Mary,” everything for Mary changed. In calling Mary’s name, Jesus lifts her grief and restores her joy. As the Good Shepherd, Jesus calls His sheep by name and they know His voice.

← v16 > “Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.”

John 10:27 > “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”

4) What are the three graces Mary Magdalene was privileged to receive?

[1] ________________________________________________________________________

[2] ________________________________________________________________________

[3] ________________________________________________________________________

← Sermon > Mary was the recipient of three special graces: [1] to see and talk with angels, [2] to be the first to see Jesus, the Risen Savior, and [3] to be the first to proclaim (preach) the glorified gospel of the resurrection. Mary Magdalene was highly favored, but she remembered her past and remained humble. Mary didn’t let God’s grace go to her head.

← Sermon > Prior to this, Mary and the other women were not prepared mentally or spiritually to find the tomb empty. None of Jesus’ followers expected a resurrection despite the numerous prophetic predictions made by Jesus. Unbelief is blind! With Christ, it is not how we beginning life, but how we end it. This is the same Mary of Luke 8:2 that states, “Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils.”

5) Why did the angels say to Mary, “Woman, why weepest thou?”

_____________________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________________

← Sermon > The angels asked Mary not because they don’t know the answer, but because they were trying to arouse or stimulate some evidence of faith in her. Mary was deeply grieved because she believed Jesus body was stolen. Mary’s grief stemmed from not understanding or anticipating the resurrection.

← Sermon > Notice that Mary must be in deep grief because she is totally unaware that she is talking with angels. Turning around, Mary sees Jesus, but, in her grief, she does not recognize it to be Jesus. The eyes cannot perceive what the mind cannot conceive.

← 1v15 > “Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? Whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou has laid him, and I will take him away.”

Bonus (10 pts): According to the sermon, what did Jesus mean by the term “brethren?”

_____________________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________________

← Sermon > Prior to this, the disciples were called “servants” or “friends,” but now they (and we too) are called “brothers.” Here, the word “brethren” is a gender-neutral term. That is, Jesus is talking about our relationship and not our gender. It is a term that means we are related to Jesus as a brother, and related to God as His child.

← Sermon > Because of Jesus’ finished work on the cross, and His victory over death and the grave, believers are given a “new relationship” with Christ as children of God and as brothers with Jesus Christ.

← v17 > “Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.”
