Player (Coach) Instructions for HUDL Highlight ReelThe coaching staff of each sport will be able to load all game film for which someone has recorded. It would be ideal to have a parent to film any/all games from a video camera. The Athletic Department has one available and it can be checked out by each Head Coach. It must be checked in and out after each use so it is available for all sports. If you have your own, any camera will work. HD cameras provide great, clear video…..but take a little longer to load. (The extra time is worth it!)Once recorded, the film can be UPLOADED to HUDL. The coaching staff has been given instructions on how to do this, HOWEVER, it would be great to have the person recording the video load it. This allows each coach to focus on coaching. Once the recorder is aware of the process, it is fairly simply to plug the camera into a computer and let it go. Admittedly, sports like football and volleyball are a little bit easier as the plays have a clear and definite beginning and ending. Continuous sports like basketball, lacrosse and soccer have a little bit of a learning curve……so practice before your first contest.HUDL is a versatile tool and has wonderful applications for coaches, athletes, and parents. These applications include:Watching team video as well as opponents videoCoaches can create ‘Playlists’ of video. In other words, he/she can filter out clips to show only offensive plays or only defensive plays in football. They could show only serves in a volleyball game. Etc…. Players and or coaches can create highlight reels. This is a great way for athletes to create highlight reels of their clips for viewing. These uneditable clips can be sent to any coach in the country, WHETHER OR NOT THEY HAVE HUDL. PREMIUM HIGHLIGHT REELS- If you’d like to take the highlights you created in a standard highlight reel (#3 above) and present them in an edited fashion- shortened clips that focus on individual performance or only a portion of a long clip in continuous play, with yellow shadow rings around you at any point during the clip, you can create a PREMIUM HIGHLIGHT REEL. You can set your clips to music, using HUDL’s preloaded music. There is an additional fee if you’d like to have a copy, but the premium highlight reel can be forwarded to Coaches at no fee. In other words, if you’d like to have a copy of your 4 seasons of highlights burned to a DVD for a keepsake, you can order it through HUDL. Fee, as of now, is $25.Practice video can be uploaded and HUDL is a great way to look at an individual’s fundamentals.HUDL is an excellent tool for our athletes to use as they look to compete in collegiate athletics. A few important tidbids:YOU are responsible for creating the video that you would like to have available. You can do anything that you’d like. ONLY THE HEAD COACH CAN FORWARD THE CLIPS TO AN INTERESTED COLLEGE COACH. This allows for the head coach to view clips being sent and to ensure that all other information is included. When you send a Highlight reel to a college coach, it includes other information along with the video- Athletic ability (bench press, squat, 40 yd. dash, 20 yd shuttle), Academic ability (GPA, SAT, ACT, Academic Honors). This allows the coach to ensure accuracy of information being sent. In other words, if you are telling a coach you can run 40 yards in 4.2 seconds, the Head Coach of your sport will be verifying that statistic before it is sent.Only game film can be utilized. No scrimmages, practices or opponent scout film can be included in highlight reels- standard or premium. If you are a multisport athlete, all of your highlights from every sport are available from the same spot, as long as you have used the same email as your log in. In this case, when you are on the Dashboard page, you will need to select which sport you are creating the reel for.Creating a Standard Highlight ReelStep One Each coach will register their players into HUDL. The critical piece of information is the person’s email. Once the player has been loaded, he/she will receive an email inviting them to log into HUDL and establish a password for each account. You must log in and establish a password if you would like to view HUDL game films and/or create highlight films. Step TwoAfter creating an account and password, you can now access HUDL. When you log in, you will be taken to a ‘Dashboard’ page. This page shows all activity from your sport’s site and has some sport related articles provided by HUDL….nutrition, sport specific exercises, etc…Across the top, in a horizontal row, you should see 3 tabs- Dashboard, Highlights, and Library. The Dashboard shows YOUR activity, the Highlights allows you to view YOUR highlights or team highlights created by your coach, and the Library shows all the game film loaded by your coach. On a sidebar of the Dashboard page, the HUDL site allows for video tutorials on all aspects of the site’s functionality. If these instructions are not helpful, visit their tutorials. This is a particularly good idea if you would like to create highlights or Premium Highlights. Step TheeClick on the Library tab across the top navigation bar. Doing this will take you to ALL video that has been uploaded and shared by your coach or their video assistant. (If you don’t see a particular game, it has either not been uploaded yet or the person uploading the film has not shared it with you- a common error) The games are sorted by season. Click on the + sign by each season to show all of the games in that season.Once you have a season available, place a check mark in the box next to the game you would like to select highlight clips from. Clicking this box will place all of that game’s video clips into the video player for you to view.Step FourOnce the clips are in the viewer, you can begin selecting clips for your video. After watching a video clip, if you decide you’d like that particular one in YOUR highlight reel, simply click the STAR to the left side where all the clips are listed. The gray star will turn YELLOW when you have that clip selected. (When a coach has selected the same clip for a team highlight or a teammate has selected the same clip, the star is already YELLOW. If this is the case, place your cursor over the yellow star. It will show you who has it in their highlight reel. You can still add it to yours……just begin typing your name into box that pops up and select your name when given the chance.Step FiveTo view your highlight reel, go to the horizontal links at the top of the page, select HIGHLIGHTS, and you can see the clips you’ve selected. You can reorder the clips in any order that you’d like. CREATING A PREMIUM HIGHLIGHT REELStep 1After creating a highlight video using the process outline above, you may decide that you would like to create a Premium Highlight reel. From the Highlights page, click on the button that says ‘Create Premium Highlight’. Step 2After you hit the Create Premium Highlight Video button, you will be taken to a page that has all of the clips that you have designated as your Highlights. These selected clips will be listed on the right hand side of the page. Take the clip that you want in your Premium Highlight Reel and drag them from the right side panel to the bottom of the page- into the Premium Highlight Video panel. Step 3Once you have dragged all the desired clips to the Premium Highlight Panel, you can now edit them. Here are a few of the things that you can do:You can take a clip and determine a beginning point and end point that you would like included in you Premium Highlight (this is particularly valuable for continuous action sports like basketball, lacrosse, and soccer. You can place a yellow circle around a player to allow college coaches, or parents, to see which player in the action is the ‘person of interest’You can draw arrows, lines, etc, like John Madden does with the telestrator. You can order the clips in any order you’d like by simply dragging the clip to the desired position in the panel. For example, you can put all of your 3 point shots together followed by all of your blocked shots. You can insert blank panels between clips to designate what the ensuing clips are- like Game Winning Shots, buzzer beater shots, etc.You can select music to play during your premium highlight reel by selecting a song from a preloaded list or by adding any song file in an mp3 format. (Please remember that all songs must be songs that are appropriate for a Regional Catholic HS)If you have any other questions, please view the tutorials available on the website. If you are still unable to figure out what you’d like, feel free to call Jim Carl at 517-404-1537. Please note that HUDL support is for Coaches only. Players and Parents will be charged a fee for the use of the support line. ................
