I think he uses the books to make gifts that look like ceramic sculptures of an open book, with decoupaged pictures and poems on the open pages. I have one with a poem about the joys of retirement. I’d love to know how he treats the pages to get them to hold together. Anyway, here’s a good way to get rid of books you can’t sell:

|[pic] |WANTED!! Reader’s Digest Condensed Books |

| |We will buy from 5 to 5,000 books |

| |at 50 cents each |

| |and WE PAY FOR SHIPPING! |

We have a continual need for Reader’s Digest Condensed Books and we would love to establish WIN-WIN

relationships with people who have access to lots of these books, including non-profit groups, book scouts, book dealers and anyone else who wants to earn some extra money.

We are not looking for special volumes, collectors volumes, etc. But we do need for the books to have the following characteristics:

• 500+ pages (most are about 502-572 pages and have 4 or 5 stories)

• Approx. 1-1/4” thick x 5-1/2” wide x 7-1/2” tall (these are the typical mail order RDC books)

We cannot use the taller 8” or 8-1/2” book, or the thin 2 story books.

• We do not care if it has a dust jacket or if it contains writing inside.

• Each book must have:

o GOOD SPINE (not cracked or split)

o NO LITTLE CHIPS OUT OF THE BINDING (usually happens to the top and bottom of old

books).

o NO DRY ROTTED BACKS (You should be able to open the book all the way without the cover

falling off.)

If you have some books like this, please call me, Aaron Bond, at 800-367-5163 or send me

e-mail at aaronbond@ or fax your information to 863-421-2310.

Once we hear from you:

o We will mail you a check for the books along with a pre-paid UPS Return Address label (we pay the freight!)

o When you get your check, put the label(s) on your box(es). If we are to send you UPS labels for shipping purposes, we need you to give us the box count and how many books are in each box. The label weight must match the box it goes on. Example: if you are sending two boxes, one is 30 books and one is 15 books, you will get a label for 42 lbs marked for the 30-book box, and a label for 21 lbs marked for the 15-book box.

o If you already have UPS service coming by, just give them the packages with the label. It will not cost you anything.

o If you don’t have regular UPS service, I can provide a list of ground service UPS drop-off points in your location when we make the transaction, or you can find one yourself at the UPS web site. (Note: do not check “UPS Drop Boxes” under Self Service Locations – these are for air only.)

o If you can’t drop off the books nearby, you can call UPS for a pickup (800-PICK-UPS).

If you would rather use PayPal and the US Mail instead, please let me know – I am happy to discuss alternatives.

Please don’t hesitate to call with any questions.

We have an on-going need and there is no time limit.

It may be wise to call ahead to verify that the sale is still scheduled, especially

if you have to travel very far.

The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh has recently stopped maintaining

its online list of library sales.

The list served its purpose wonderfully for years, doing much to encourage

the growth of library used book sales.

I am very grateful to the folks at the library, especially to Cathy Chaparro,

for all the help they have given me and my SaleList.

The Library is still graciously providing a link to

my Used Book Sales and Stores document, but any announcements of book

sales that you used to send to Cathy should now come directly to me:

ALPHABETICAL INDEX

of Library Sales Events

The date in the “1st day” column indicates where to find a detailed listing in the chronological section that begins on page 9.

If the current year appears in the “year” column, the sale has been confirmed for this year. If some of the data in that same entry are in

red, they are from last year and we are waiting for this year’s information. If the entry is all in black, it is complete and correct. If the days in the “1st day” column are 00, we have been told only that this year’s sale will be in or around the indicated month; the detailed entry will be placed at the beginning of that month’s listings until the actual dates are known.

HELP WANTED

There are several pages in this document that were left blank on purpose,

so that the other side of the sheet can be used as a poster

or so that a particular section will begin on the front of a sheet.

I hate to waste anything, so I’ve started putting odd bits of info on those filler pages.

Do you have any suggestions of book- or library-related

material that might be printed on those blank pages

for the amusement or edification of us all?

Quotations, cartoons, lists of banned books, editorials...whatever....

these entries would not fit at the end of the “Ongoing Book Sales” section on page 30:

Used Book Sales

Most public libraries have used book sales, either periodically or on an ongoing basis. They are usually run by a “Friends of the Library” group and survive on donations and volunteers. It may be wise to call the organization to verify date, time, and location, especially in those cases where an approximate or last year's date is given. The annual book sales are usually large events.

BOOK SPACE

You’re probably not worth knowing

-- Roger of MARTIN, 1979

How to Donate Books

Don't leave donated materials on the sale shelves. It screws up the system a lot.

Give them to a library staff member or a Friends of the Library volunteer, who can also give you a tax receipt.

Shoot Your Own Dog

In the classic frontier tale Old Yeller, the beloved hound is bitten while fighting off a rabid wolf who is attacking the hero’s mother and sister. The boy is devastated when his mother says Old Yeller must be shot to prevent spreading the deadly disease, but he forces himself to be a man, put aside sentiment, and do what is needed. Later his father helps him to see that “that’s how life is a part of the time…A man can’t afford to waste all the good part, worrying about the bad parts”. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

So, here’s what you gotta do. When you pack up donations of used books and magazines to donate to the Library, please Shoot Your Own Dog. Get rid of the books that have no future; don’t take them to the Library for execution. It’s too hard on volunteers' souls.

Remember, Printing it Doesn't Make it Sacred

Anything photocopied will be thrown out immediately. Supplemental readings from classes, texts used in in-service training, anything your broker sends you in the mail, CATALOGS, the complete list of alumni from your college or members of your professional organization . . . they've served their purpose. Let them go. Sure, there may be people who are looking for just that information, but they are probably looking on the Internet.

NO INSTRUCTION MANUALS for anything more esoteric than a microwave – and that manual better have recipes in it.

Watch Out for Infection

MILDEW IS ALIVE. If your books are damp, smelly, or have dark dots and splotches, they are not only unmarketable, they are dangerous to other books. They must be thrown away immediately, and the library has to pay for trash collection, so it is unkind to donate them.

Appearance Counts

What makes a book pleasant to hold? Flat pages, strong binding, no water damage, paper that doesn't flake, no smell, no stickiness or grime, a spine with few crease lines – these are all basic to most people's enjoyment of the physical experience of holding a book. It is possible to overlook some problems if the book is very special, but be honest – would you lend it to your pickiest friend?

Please stack donations in a box or a paper bag.

Plastic bags, especially trash bags, do awful things to the books. Once books are bent, they're dead.

Know What You are Donating

Check boxes that have been packed for a long time to be sure there is nothing in them by mistake. Finding old photos that can't be returned is traumatic. Live spiders are scary. On the other hand, my two best paring knives were found in boxes of books (months apart!)

Some Things Just Don't Sell

NO TEXTBOOKS. If they are older than two or three years, nobody wants to buy them. If they are newer, you should take them to a college bookstore or one of the used textbook stores near a college campus. You can make some money, and the book is more likely to reach the right audience. The exceptions are items with unique features. We had a chemistry textbook written by Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling … that was interesting. We had no problem selling a fifth grade health/hygiene text from 1910; it was fascinating. If a textbook is useful as a reference book because of an excellent glossary or an appendix with extraordinarily well organized information, attach a note about its special features. If it isn't worth the time to do that, why are you giving it to us?? NO ENCYCLOPEDIAS – nobody buys them.

Would you: Buy based on Consumer Reports studies from 1995? Stay at a hotel recommended by a guide book from 1975? Verify bets about “world records” with a Guinness Book from 1980? Then look in our FREE box; we can’t find many people who will buy these things, so that’s why we say NO OUTDATED MAGAZINES, TRAVEL BOOKS, PRICE LISTS FOR COLLECTORS, ETC. unless they are so old that they are of historical interest. NOBODY wants to read about which mutual funds to buy last year.

To our valued dealer patrons:

The Friends of the Mt. Lebanon Public Library are pleased to invite you to attend our first annual Rare Book Auction, to be held in conjunction with our Twice Sold Tales used book sale. This auction will feature 30+ valuable books that we have received as donations. Registration is required, and I have attached a registration form for your use (in both jpg and powerpoint format). Registrations will be accepted from now until the start of the auction, and, since space is limited, will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. We are asking for a nominal registration fee of $5, which will be credited toward any purchase that you make at the auction.

Sometime during the next month, a complete list and descriptions of the books that will be auctioned will be posted on the library's web site, at mtlebanon/friendsbooks.html. The books will also be on display during the week of the sale. Each book will also be assigned a "Buy Me Now" price at which it could be purchased during the week of the sale but prior to the start of the auction.

A partial list of the books that will be available includes:

• Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand. 1957, 1st edition, 1st printing, with DJ

• The Further Adventures of the One-Eyed Poacher, by Edmund Ware Smith 1st edition, limited, numbered and signed, no DJ

• From Here to Eternity, by James Jones, 1951, 1st edition with DJ

• Once there was a War, by John Steinbeck, 1958, with DJ

• Franny and Zooey, by J. D. Salinger, 1961, 1st edition with DJ

• Black's Law Dictionary, 1933, 3rd edition

or Joan Riggs, Auction Chair, at jmr607@.

from an e-mail dated 10/7/2005:

To our faithful customers,

It’s with much regret that we announce that the Bryn Mawr-Vassar Bookstore is closing its doors for good at the end of October.  There were a number of factors leading to this decision, but primarily it seems that the day of the small used bookstore is past – we just can’t compete with the convenience and broad selection of internet book dealers.  We’ll certainly miss our store and all of you!  But after 33 years we’re calling it a day.

Meanwhile, October will be a month of great bargains!  For the first two weeks (Wednesday, October 5 through Saturday, October 8 and Wednesday, October 12 through Saturday, October 15), every book in the store will be 50% off.  Sales will escalate during the two weeks after that (details to be announced).  We hope all of you find the time to come in!

Sincerely,

Alison Huettner

Vice President, Bryn Mawr-Vassar Bookstore
