I was born here in the valley and graduated from Gilbert High School in 2004. I then attended undergraduate and law school in Boston, Massachusetts, and spent two years studying abroad in England, France, Italy, and Israel. I speak French, Italian, and Spanish, and read and write Hebrew and Yiddish. I remain a licensed lawyer in the state of Arizona, previously working for the Women’s Bar Foundation of Boston, the United States Department of Commerce, US Census Bureau in Boston, Massachusetts, and the Arizona Attorney General’s Office, Financial Remedies Department. My mother taught at Williams Field High School from 2007-2012, and later taught at Higley High School. My sister spent six years as a teacher at Sossaman Middle School and now works as a student advisor at Chandler Gilbert Community College. I became a teacher six years ago in Mesa Public Schools, then spent four years at Queen Creek High School before coming to Williams Field. I love History, English, and getting to know my students and their families. I also enjoy watching and playing sports, reading, binging TV shows and going to the movies. COURSE OVERVIEW: American History will span from early inhabitants of the Americas all the way until current times. Students will look at our beginnings, discover new land, witness revolution, envision expansion, and help facilitate change and equality as we evolve into modern America. CLASS SUPPLIES:Students should always have a pen or pencil available to write with, and will also need either a spiral bound notebook pad, or a regular bound notebook pad in order to conduct notes, classroom activities, and general classroom usage. These classes will no require a binder, although they are extremely effective for organization.I need to send them material for whatever reason. A very reliable, safe, and free email is gmail.CLASSROOM MEDIA: Within this class, I will be showing students a variety of short media clips regarding a link to historical topics, concepts, or events. I like to pull from such sources as: History Channel, YouTube Documentaries, Khan Academy, etc… Occasionally, we will view clips from actual historical movies to demonstrate the times based off of accurate historical context. I do my best to filter and sensor language as much as possible, but there is occasional violence just like history has demonstrated. If you prefer that your child NOT be exposed to any sort of historical media that may depict violence, please contact me ahead of time so I can adjust for your child and provide them an alternative assignment. If you have any questions or concerns regarding media, please contact me! GRADING: Scale: A = 90-100%; B = 80-89.9%; C = 70-79.9%; D = 60-69.9%; F = 0-59.9%I do reserve the right to round grades (.5 or higher) up for students who have exemplified consistent effort throughout the year if it will take them up a letter grade (ex. 89.6 90% = A). THIS IS MY CHOICE.*Grading Breakdown Scale:Tests/Projects = 40%Quizzes = 20%Classwork / Homework = 20%Semester Exam = 20%Both Parents and Students should constantly be checking your grades online! Parent Vue and Student Vue are both imperative to staying on top of grades!CLASS RULES: Respect! I rarely have to remove students from my class… ever. It would take a great deal of disruption to have to be removed. I’ve discovered over the years that once students embrace the responsibility of owning their own classroom and making it the environment they want, our room becomes a pretty tight knit community of academic workers and achievers. With that said, below are the simple rules we abide by in this class.#1 Respect yourself: Work to the best of your ability, come to class every day, on time and prepared to learn.#2 Respect others: Be polite, respectful, and don’t interrupt anyone else’s freedom to learn or express their educated opinion. I will mediate any controversial discussions accordingly, but I promote educated and supportive debate, understanding, and acceptance.#3 Respect our community: Keep YOUR classroom environment clean and in order, contribute, and follow school rules –Dress according to code, prevent sexual harassment, and obey technology policies.DISCIPLINE: If there comes an instance where I have to discipline a student, it typically goes as such:1st incident: Private discussion with student for understanding the problematic issue.2nd incident: Student may be removed from the class and sent to administration for discipline.3rd incident: Student will be removed from the class, sent to administration, disciplined, and possibly removed from the class PERMANENTLY. DRINKS & FOOD: Water is the only drink allowed within the classrooms. There is also a no food policy for the classrooms at Williams Field as well, however, upon request, I may allow students to occasionally snack on HEALTHY FOOD. Soda, Polar Pops, Coffee, Doritos, candy, and other junk IS PROHIBITED! Not only that but it’s just not good for you!PHONES / ELECTRONICS: No electronic devices in class unless I allow you to do so. There will be plenty of times where you may be working independently and I allow you to listen to your own music via ear buds. Cell phones will be kept OUT OF SITE unless being used for class purposes! – If I have to address a phone issue the following may happen:1st - I will simply confiscate the phone for the 1st instance in which you will get it back after class (with a quick discussion).2nd - If it happens again, I confiscate the phone, and send it down to the office in which you will then sign a phone behavior contract, and you get your phone back.3rd - Confiscation, office gets phone, and parents will have to then come and get it for you. NOTICE: If your child has issues with their phone and refuses to turn over their phone to a teacher or administrator, this is now considered “Defiance” under the student code of conduct, which is then punishable through disciplinary action. Simply put, please remind your child to only have their phone out when asked upon.RESTROOMS: Students will ask permission, and if granted, will sign out using the classroom sign out sheet, then take the pass to the restroom. I 100% fully reserve the right to NOT let you use the restroom if you are a wanderer or you ask to go as we start notes, an assignment, and activity, or so on and so forth. If you have special circumstances, let me know privately and I will accommodate as necessary.ATTENDANCE / SWEEP / DETENTION: Attendance in class is crucial to doing well in these courses. If a student knows that they will be absent from class before the absence, he or she should inform the school and then teacher, so he/she may collect any work that is available for those absences. The school / district policy on overall attendance is as follows: “Students are considered absent if they are 10 or more minutes late to a single class period.” If a student is 10 or more minutes late, they will be sent to SWEEP and will receive an absence in the class. If a student enters class after the bell, but within the first 10 minutes of class, they are simply marked tardy. The offenses below are for tardies in a given class period (not cumulative between all classes).1st offense: student will be warned verbally or in writing.2nd offense: student will be warned verbally or in writing.3rd offense: student will be disciplined by administration and could receive detention* or Saturday school** as a result. Either of these will be assigned by a school administrator not the teacher.4th offense: two (2) days after-school detention (to be assigned by a school administrator)*Detention will take place directly after school, parents are responsible for pick up if necessary.**Saturday school requires students to attend detention on Saturday mornings (aka Saturday School). Parents will be notified by phone that detention has been assigned.NOTE: ANY STUDENTS WHO RECEIVE MORE THAN 10 “UNEXCUSED ABSENCES” DURING THE YEAR WILL BE GIVEN A “NO CREDIT” STATUS IN THE CLASS!!!! This simply means that you will NOT receive credit for your history class this year and must take it over. These absences are monitored by both Williams Field Administration as well as Teachers. GO TO CLASS PEOPLE!LATE or MAKE-UP WORK: The instructor reserves the right to deal with specific late work and make-up work issues on a case by case basis. The general rules that will apply are as follows:If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to contact the teacher for any class work, homework, and/or notes you missed. You have 2 days to make up any Quiz, Test or Assignment given in your absence. Late assignments will be deducted up to 50%?and ONLY accepted until the end of the unit. AFTER UNIT ASSESSMENT NO LATEWORK FOR THAT UNIT WILL BE ACCEPTED! NO EXCEPTIONS!!EXAM / QUIZ RE-TAKES: If a student performs poorly on an exam or quiz, they have the opportunity to re-take them. Student must have performed within the 60% range or lower to be eligible for a re-take. However, in order to re-take the student MUST complete the following steps:First, student will complete ALL test corrections on ALL wrong responses before being eligible for re-testing.Second, re-take will be a 100% written exam coming from various topics from the original test. Instructions for completing this test will come directly from the teacher.NOTE: The grade earned on the second test will be the one entered as a final grade.THIS EXCLUDES MIDTERMS AND FINAL EXAMS!!Questions or Concerns: If you ever have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me (Joshua. zatcoff@). I check my email several times throughout the day. Please send me a detailed message email (including your student's name, what class they are in, and your question or concern) and I will respond to your email as soon as possible.
