AAPD NAMES NEW BOARD OFFICERS AND TRUSTEES AT ANNUAL SESSION

CHICAGO -- June 15, 2010 — The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), the recognized leader in children’s dental and oral health, inducted the new President and Officers for the AAPD Board of Trustees during its 63rd Annual Session at the Hilton Chicago Hotel & Towers on May 27, 2010.

John R. Liu, DDS, President. Dr. Liu has a private practice in Issaquah, Washington and has been an AAPD member for 22 years. He attended dental school at Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California and received his pediatric dentistry certificate from Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. Most recently, Dr. Liu has served as the AAPD’s vice president (2008-2009), secretary-treasurer (2007-2008) and trustee at large. His presidential agenda will focus on access to care for the underserved and address workforce issues. In addition, he will look to increase membership awareness on the importance of giving back to educational institutions that have maintained the strength and relevancy of the pediatric dental profession. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, as well as a fellow of both the American College of Dentists and Pierre Fauchard Academy. Dr. Liu is a national media spokesperson for the AAPD.

Rhea M. Haugseth, DMD, President-Elect. She has served as the AAPD’s vice president (2009-2010), secretary-treasurer (2008-2009), Parliamentarian (2005-2006) and the AAPD’s District III Trustee (2002-2005). Over the past 30 years, Dr. Haugseth has been a member of the AAPD and has a private practice in Marietta, Georgia. She attended dental school at University of Louisville and received her pediatric dental certificate from Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Haugseth is a fellow of AAPD and a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. She also currently serves as president of the Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry (2010-2011). Dr. Haugseth’s family includes her father, four brothers and their wives, six nieces and nephews and her Wheaten Terrier. She is a national media spokesperson for the AAPD.

Joel H. Berg, DDS, MS, Vice President. He most recently served as Secretary-Treasurer (2009-2010) and is a past president of Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children: the Foundation of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Berg has been a member of the AAPD for 24 years. He received his pediatric dentistry certificate and attended dental school at the University of Iowa. He also served as the AAPD’s District VI trustee from (2006 to 2009). In addition to his leadership roles, he is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, a fellow of the American College of Dentists and a fellow of International College of Dentists. Department of Pediatric Dentistry, and professor and Lloyd and Kay Chapman Chair for Oral Health at the University of Washington. He is also the Director of Dentistry at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Dr. Berg resides in Bellevue, Washington and has two daughters that are both students at Arizona State University. He has lectured in more than 30 countries and enjoys studying the viticulture of Washington State and surfing in Hawaii. Dr. Berg is a national media spokesperson for the AAPD.

Warren A. Brill, DMD, MS (HYG), FAAPD, Secretary-Treasurer. Dr. Brill is a former member of the Board of Trustees of the AAPD, representing District II. Prior to his Board election, he was chair of the Council on Dental Benefit Programs. Presently he is chair of the AAPD Council on Government Affairs and expert consultant to the Council on Dental Benefit Programs. He also serves as chair of the Maryland Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (MAPD) Legislative Affairs Committee (2000-2010), MAPD Executive Committee (2000-2010) and chair of the MAPD Annual Meeting General Arrangements Committee (2006-2010). Dr. Brill received his dental degree from the University of Pennsylvania and completed specialty training in pediatric dentistry at the University of Maryland and the School of Medicine of Johns Hopkins University. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. Presently, he is a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Maryland. An AAPD member for the past 17 years, he is the 2009 recipient of the AAPD Pediatric Dentist of the Year Award. Dr. Brill resides in Maryland with his wife Eva and has two daughters, one grandson and one granddaughter. He maintains a full-time private practice in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Brill is a national media spokesperson for the AAPD.

K. Jean Beauchamp, DDS, Parliamentarian. Dr. Beauchamp has been an AAPD member for 19 years and maintains a private practice in Clarksville, Tennessee. She attended dental school and received her pediatric dental certificate at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Beauchamp is the AAPD chair of the Communication Committee and represents the Children’s Oral Health Planning Group/State of Tennessee. She has been a delegate of the American Dental Association since 2007 and served as a PTAC Representative to the Joint Commission (2003-2009). Dr. Beauchamp was also 8th District Trustee and chairman of the Government Affairs Committee for the Tennessee Dental Association. She and her husband, Lee Scott, reside in Springfield, Tennessee.

William C. Berlocher, DDS, MS, Immediate Past-President. Dr. Berlocher has a private practice in Corpus Christi, Texas and has been an AAPD member for nearly thirty years. He attended dental school at the University of Texas Dental Branch, received his pediatric dental certificate from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) and received a masters in education from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Dr. Berlocher received his bachelor of science from Texas A&M University. Among many leadership roles, Dr. Berlocher served as president of both the Texas Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and AAPD, and as director and chairman of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.  He also served as chairman of the Commission on Dental Accreditation's Pediatric Dentistry Advisory Committee. Mario E. Ramos, DDS, At-Large Trustee. Dr. Ramos attended dental school at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and received his pediatric dental certificate from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine-Boston’s Children’s Hospital. An AAPD member for the past 16 years, he most recently served as chair of the AAPD Council on Continuing Education (2001-2009). Other leadership roles included serving as President of the Hispanic Dental Association in 2005. He is a fellow of the AAPD, AAPD representative to the ADA-CERP Committee and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Ramos maintains a private practice in Midland Park, New Jersey, and is the recipient of the UMDNJ Board of Concerned Citizens’ Award of Excellence. He lives with his three boys, Adam, Kevin and Jack, and enjoys skiing, the beach and New York Yankee games. He is a national media spokesperson for the AAPD.

Man Wai Ng, DDS, MPH, District I Trustee.  She is the Chief of the Department of Dentistry at Children’s Hospital Boston and attended dental school at Stony Book University, completing her pediatric dentistry residency at Children’s Hospital Boston.  She has a Masters in Public Health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health.  She has been a member of AAPD since 1992 and received her American Board of Pediatric Dentistry certification in 1997.  She has served on AAPD’s Editorial Board Member, Pediatric Dentistry, chair of the Council on Postdoctoral Education, chair of the Council on Scientific Affairs, Committee on Perinatal and Infant Oral Health and the Ad Hoc Committee on Residency Standards.  Dr. Ng is also a member of the American Dental Association and serves as a consultant to the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, Commission on Dental Accreditation, Federal Drug Administration and the Medical Devices Advisory Committee.  She and her husband, Douglas Chin, reside in Brookline, Massachusetts with their two sons, Brendan and Devin.

James D. Nickman, DDS, District IV trustee. He earned his D.D.S. and Master’s Degree from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Nickman has been a member of the AAPD for 11 years, as well as a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry since 2002. He currently serves on the Council on Government Affairs, Council on Dental Benefit Programs, the Committee on the Adolescent and the Council on Membership. He is the past president of the Minneapolis District Dental Society and serves on the Minnesota Dental Association Children’s Health Care Committee. Dr. Nickman is also the past president of the North Central Society of Pediatric Dentistry, Minnesota Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry Alumni Society. Dr. Nickman is a member of the International College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He maintains a private practice in the Twin Cities and teaches part-time at the University of Minnesota. He and his wife, Jean, have three children: Beth, Kyle and Noah. Dr. Nickman enjoys the outdoors and travel.

J.C. Shirley, DMD, Director of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD).  He is a pediatric dentist with the Center for Craniofacial Disorders at Children’s Healthcare of

Atlanta Pediatric Hospital and is in private practice with Alpharettta Children’s Dentistry. He has been an AAPD member for 16 years and has been a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry since 1997.  Dr. Shirley attended dental school at the University of Mississippi and received his pediatric dental certificate and Master’s degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.  Dr. Shirley’s recent AAPD/ABPD activities include

serving as ABPD Oral Clinical Examination Sub-committee co chair (2008-20009), AAPD Leadership Institute (2007-2009) and Head Start Home Initiative State Leader (2008-2009).  Dr. Shirley also served as president of the Georgia Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (2008-2009).  In addition, he is a clinical assistant professor at the Medical College of Georgia. His other professional affiliations include American Dental Association, American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association, Special Care Dentistry Association, American Academy of Pediatrics and the Hinman Dental Society.
