Simpson in Sylvan Grove, KS. The youngest of three children, Sandra adored her two older brothers, Terry and Noel, and especially enjoyed telling stories “on them” of the torture she endured as their younger sister. Sandy graduated from Garden City High School in 1968, attended Garden City Community College and graduated with her B.A. from Fort Hays State University in 1972. She worked briefly at a bank in Longmont, Colorado before returning to life in Southwest Kansas where she began her career in Social Work with the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services which lasted more than 30 years. Sandy married Harvey Russell on July 21, 1979, in Haven, KS, becoming a much loved wife and step-mother of Scott, Vicki, and Lisa Russell. Sandy was completely devoted to her family including her mother, brothers, nieces, and nephews, and especially enjoyed holidays and family gatherings. Sandy loved holidays. Each year on Halloween, the house was transformed into a haunted house complete with a caldron, tombstones, and coffin. And then there was Christmas, her favorite holiday. She would spend the entire year shopping and endless hours wrapping gifts, making sure everyone on the list got what they asked for and then some. Stockings were equally important, with every family member and friend in attendance having a stocking fully stuffed with fabulously wrapped treats and surprises! Sandra’s love of people and caring and compassionate nature influenced her work on behalf of children and families, those who worked with her, and her family and friends. She was known for being able to get the job done and for doing the right thing. She especially enjoyed time with her SRS co-workers, weather it was sharing off the wall stress relievers with them, an Easter Bonnet contest, a baby shower, or the annual Christmas potluck. Sandy enjoyed traveling with Harvey to visit the kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews. She patiently humored Harvey stopping at every historical point, tourist spot, and antique store along the way. Following her retirement, she became an avid gardener, adding something new to the yard almost daily. Sandra was a loving and devoted care-giver and companion to Harvey and was dearly loved by her family. In Loving MemorySandra K. “Sandy” Russell1950 ~ 2011 ................
