Dear ACSM member,

As President Obama continues his federal appointment and nomination process, we would like to underscore with you some thoughts about the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, and ask you to consider taking action. As you know, the President’s Council has long served as a nationwide leader in health and fitness, encouraging all citizens to start and maintain a physically active lifestyle. White House appointments to the President’s Council are of great importance, as the Council has the ability to direct and influence programs that will affect the health and longevity of Americans.

President Obama is likely nearing decisions on appointments to the President’s Council, including the selection of the next Chair. The Chair of the President’s Council serves an especially vital role in helping to set direction and goals for the Council.

Our attention was recently drawn to a person who would bring an extraordinary commitment to success as the Chair of the President’s Council, and who has proven ability to work highly effectively with state and national organizations to promote activity, physical fitness, and sports. He is the current Chair of the California Governor’s Council, Jake Steinfeld, who recently received national honors from the association of Governors’ Councils and State Coalition for Physical Fitness and Sports. Please see below for a brief history on Jake’s work in the health and fitness field.

Jake has met and exceeded the high expectations that were given him when he was appointed to the state chair role by a former President’s Council chair and current Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Web site of the California Governor’s Council provides a glimpse at the success and achievements and high energy of its Chair.

We likely all have a common vision of the ideal Chair of the President’s Council. Dedicated. Fully committed in time and energy. Capable of motivating youth and adults to a more active lifestyle. Effective at with and mobilizing organizations and individuals. Able to hit the ground running and devoted to tangible progress. Jake Steinfeld meets and exceeds all those tests.

It’s important that the White House hears the voice of ACSM’s membership when choosing the next chair of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. We ask that you consider sharing with the White House your recommendation of California Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Chair Jake Steinfeld.

Jake Steinfeld

Jake Steinfeld is one of the fitness industry’s reigning icons. In addition to serving as CEO of Body by Jake Global, he was appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to serve as Chairman of the California Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (), with the mission of establishing California as the nation’s first “Fitness State.” Jake’s goal is to inspire kids to have a “Don’t Quit!” attitude while trying to win the Governor’s Challenge that requires them to be active for 30-60 minutes a day, three days a week, for one month.

One of the council’s more successful initiatives that Jake implemented are the Spotlight Awards, which honor individuals, organizations and events that positively impact the physical activity and fitness levels of California’s children and youth. The National Association for Health and Fitness (NAHF) named the California Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports as State Council of the Year for the second time in a row recognizing Jake’s leadership in promoting health and fitness as a model for the country.

Jake created his Don’t Quit! Foundation to support and educate the youth of America about the value of physical fitness by providing state of the art fitness centers in inner city middle and high schools. There are now 30 Don’t Quit! Fitness Centers across the United States of America.

Ahead of the trends, Jake continues to utilize his entrepreneurial spirit and a commitment to fitness and philanthropy to help transform lives.
