Job Description for Peer Support Co-ordinator Job Title: Peer Support Co-ordinator - Integrated Infant Feeding TeamSalary: ?11.39 per hourNumber of posts: 1 x 22.5 hour postType of contract: Fixed term to 31st March 2020 Start date: 7th January 2019Possibility of some paid induction/training dates December 2018Hours of work: 22.5 hours per week (0.6 WTE) 5 days per week, 4.5 hours per day within office hoursWork location: Ayrshire Maternity Unit (AMU), Kilmarnock Flexibility to travel frequently and extensively in the local area including 1:1 home visitsResponsible to: BfN Ayrshire Project ManagerRequirements:Full driving licence and access to a carBackground and purpose to the post: NHS Ayrshire and Arran (NHSA&A) in partnership with the Breastfeeding Network (BfN) has been awarded Programme for Government funding to pilot an Integrated Infant Feeding Team model. A key component of the pilot is the establishment and delivery of a breastfeeding peer support service. The aim of the peer support service is to give children in Ayrshire the best start in life by supporting families who choose to breastfeed to initiate breastfeeding and to support them to continue breastfeeding. The service will include both 1:1 and group support. The service will enable those women who choose to breastfeed access to appropriate support services regardless of age, ethnic origin, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, social status and employment status. The main aims of the peer support service are to: Deliver proactive 1:1 peer support on an opt-out basis for parents in specific groups as defined by the project plan, for example mums who have had a c-section delivery. Liaise with Team colleagues, Midwives, Health Visitors and family support staff to identify mothers who would benefit from breastfeeding support. Provide home visits and phone/text support to offer encouragement, information and support. Provide information to pregnant women about the breastfeeding support available including attendance at antenatal classes across Ayrshire. Provide information and support for parents on neonatal and paediatric wards. Work within the Baby Friendly Initiative remit. Provide support to and work in conjunction with other organisations and existing BfN Helpers/Supporters.Provide additional community breastfeeding support through BfN breastfeeding centres and the establishment of 2 new Parent and Baby Café’s.Role Summary The Peer Support Co-ordinator will be responsible for leading, co-ordinating and supporting a team of employed peer supporters; managing coordination of support for breastfeeding women looking for 1:1 support and group support, working with partner and community organisations to promote breastfeeding and the BfN. The Peer Support Coordinator will be based centrally at AMU to manage the service and develop close working relationships with NHSA&A colleagues. The postholder will have lead responsibility for the provision of breastfeeding support to parents on the Neonatal and Paediatric wards within AMU, including provision of information around expressing and storing breastmilk.Main duties and responsibilitiesPersonalMaintaining own BfN registration with regular supervision, mandatory training and continuing professional development.Leadership Lead, support and motivate a small team of employed Peer Supporters. Coordinate delivery of the service i.e. rotas, home visits, new peer support groups.Carry out line management duties for Peer Supporters including appraisals, 1:1 meetings etc.Take responsibility for ensuring that volunteers/staff are appropriately trained and have access to supervision. Participate effectively in meetings with health professionals and local stakeholders as agreed with Project Manager.Deliver key performance indicators to timescales as outlined in the funding contract. Develop partnerships by engaging and communicating with other organisations e.g. NHS, Local Authorities and voluntary/community municate key practical breastfeeding messages in a clear, persuasive and empathetic manner.Work closely with the BfN Ayrshire Project Manager to deliver effective breastfeeding support in Ayrshire.Service ManagementReceive personal details of new mums from Integrated Infant Feeding Team colleagues, Midwives, Health Visitors, Family Nurses and family support services. Organise the work of employed Peer Supporters in consultation with NHS colleagues to meet the needs of the local area and ensure consistent levels of cover.Amending staffing rotas in advance and on a daily basis according to availability changes, including keeping track of visits booked and group municating scheduling changes with staff team and partner organisations.Ensuring health professionals and other partner organisations are kept up to date with schedules and any changes to scheduling.Ensuring resources (leaflets, books, dolls, contact forms, books etc.) are available as required.Support Peer Supporters to access local and BfN training as required. Provide cover for staff roles when cover by other staff members is not possible.Occasionally deputise for the Ayrshire Project Manager.Data management, reporting and evaluationKeep an accurate database of contact details, training and activities of all Peer Supporters in line with BfN and local practicesRetrieving statistics forms from Peer Supporters in line with GDPR regulations and BfN IG policyKeeping an accurate database and log of leads/contacts/conversations to report on BfN Peer Supporter activityDeveloping and evaluating feedback from service users Presenting reports to local stakeholders and attending meetingsSupervision and TrainingSending supervision schedules to Peer Supporters and volunteersAssisting staff and volunteers to meet ongoing BfN and NHS training requirements and to identify other development needsBreastfeeding supportUndertaking urgent home visits and covering drop-ins if no staff are municate key practical breastfeeding messages in a clear, persuasive and empathetic manner.Offering support to families and health care professionals on the paediatric wards at AMU as needed.Offering support to families on the neonatal ward at AMU on a weekly basis or as required by the team and project munity engagementDevelop strong partnerships with NHSA&A staff, other organisations and community. members, some of whom may have barriers to understanding health messages or accessing support.Seek and take advantage of opportunities to promote the service to local communities, including planning events and/or exhibiting at external pliance with Policies and ProceduresKeep accurate and up to date records in line with BfN Information Governance policy, BfN Code of Conduct and other local policies.
