It was probably composed by one of the troubadours and performed unaccompanied. It may also have been accompanied by another medieval instrument such as the psaltery. Estampie comes from the French word ‘estamper’, which means ‘to stamp the feet’.Musical feature 3: InstrumentsDescription: The types of instruments included: Loud outdoor instruments such as the pipe, tabor (drum), shawm (a wind instrument), trumpet and cornet. Soft indoor instruments such as the fiddle, hurdy-gurdy, psaltery and rebec. A hurdy-gurdy is like a viola with a handle at one end. A psaltery is a stringed instrument that is plucked with the fingers or a plectrum.
