Abdomen and Organs of the Abdominal Cavity Lecture

At the end of this lecture, the student should be able to:

1) Identify the ventral and dorsal cavities of the body and their boundaries

2) Identify and describe the location and typical contents of each of the 4 abdominal regions

3) Identify the names, origin, insertion, action and innervation of the muscles of the anterior and posterior abdominal wall

4) Identify which structures in the abdomen are intraperitoneal and which are retroperitoneal

5) Explain the structure and function of peritoneum & mesenteries, identifying major mesenteries in the abdominal cavity

6) Identify the parts of the urinary system

7) Explain the function of the kidney

8) Describe the gross anatomy of the kidney and surrounding capsules

9) Describe the internal anatomy of the kidney (cortex, medulla, calices, renal pelvis) and the general function of each part

10) Describe the movement of urine through the internal anatomy of the kidney and other structures leading to its exit from the body

11) Describe the location, structure and function of the bladder

12) Relate the various aspects of the bladder’s structure to its functions

13) Describe the location, structure and function of the ureters, urethra, urethral sphincters and orifices

14) Explain the sexual dimorphism in the structure and function of the male and female urethra

15) Explain how micturition occurs

16) Identify the parts of the alimentary canal

17) Identify the accessory organs of the digestive system

18) Describe the location, structure and function of the stomach

19) Describe the location, structure and function of the small intestine

20) Describe the modifications for absorption found in the small intestine

21) Describe the location, structure and function of the parts of the large intestine

22) Describe the defecation reflex

23) Identify where along the gastrointestinal tract mechanical and chemical breakdown of food occurs

24) Describe the location and functions of the liver, gall bladder and the duct system that connects them

25) Describe the location and function of the pancreas; explain how it functions as an exocrine and endocrine gland

26) Describe the location and function of the spleen

27) Identify the main arteries supplying each abdominal organ

28) Relate structure to function of the above abdominal organs studied, where applicable

29) Compare and contrast the parts of the gastsrointestinal tract

30) Compare and contrast organs that function for storage

31) Compare and contrast the micturition reflex with the defecation reflex
