My Professional Development PlanMarylynn AdamskiFerris State UniversityMy Professional Development PlanIn this paper I have described and analyzed my professional behavior and compared it to the ANA Standards of Professional Nursing Performance (ANA, 2004). Next I took a look at my goals for the next 5 to 10 years. After identifying my goals I developed a plan on how to accomplish those goals. I also developed a way to keep myself on track and not to let myself get overwhelmed. My Professional DevelopmentThere are many aspects that go into making my professional development plan. First, I have to look at my current practice and compare it to the American Nurses Association (ANA) Standards of Professional Nursing Performance. The areas that I will compare are quality of practice, education, professional practice evaluation, collegiality, collaboration, ethics, research, resource utilization and leadership (ANA, 2004). Once I have compared my practice to the standards, I can reflect on what I can do to maintain and further incorporate the ANA standards into my practice. After comparing the standards, I will look at my goals for the future. Goals are usually set in five to ten year time frames. It is easier to plan if you have a specific time frame. After I determine what my goals are then I will have to make a plan to achieve these goals. It is important to have a system set up to evaluate if I am achieving my goals and to make changes when needed to meet my goals. Standards of Professional PerformancesQuality of PracticeAccording to the ANA “the registered nurse systematically enhances the quality of care and effectiveness of the nursing practice” (ANA, 2004, p. 33). As a professional nurse working on a Medical Surgical floor at West Shore Medical Center, I work hard to insure that the same quality care is given to every patient. One way of doing this is to listen to what my patient has to say and then I can get a better idea of the care my patient needs. I also look up the policies and protocols that tell how care should be given in our facility and follow them. If I am unsure about how to do something then I ask another nurse for help. If a process is not working, I try to find out why it is not working and brainstorm with other nurses and staff to determine what we can do to make it work. I am committed to providing my patients with quality care.EducationThe registered nurse attains knowledge and competency that reflects current nursing practice (ANA, 2004, p. 35). There are several ways in which I have continued my education since graduating from nursing school in addition to what is required to keep my license current. I attend seminars when they are available in my area. If I cannot go to the seminar we have REMEC in-services at our hospital, I then go to those. We also have skills fair and in-services in our hospital. There are also nursing magazines that I receive that have articles that help with my practice. One thing that I am going to do that will be very educational is going to the Sepsis Summit at Boyne Mountain. I just finished taking ACLS and I passed so I now have that certification. Professional Practice EvaluationThe registered nurse evaluates one’s own nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and guidelines, relevant statues, rules and regulations (ANA, 2004, p. 36). I found that when I reevaluated my nursing care by getting feedback from my manager and others nurses. It helped me to see another point of view and I was able to incorporate their ideas into my nursing care. I look at the outcomes of the care that I provided, did something work better than something else. Does another nurse have a better way of giving care and would it apply to my patients. When evaluating my nursing practice I make sure it follows the professional standards and my hospital policies and protocol. CollegialityThe registered nurse interacts with and contributes to the professional development of peers and colleagues (ANA, 2004, p. 37). For several years now I have been a Team Leader on the midnight shift. I have been a preceptor for several years and help to train the new nurses at our facility. For the past year I have been a member of the Professional Practice Committee at our hospital. As a member, I have brought issues to the committee in an effort to make thing better for the nurses. I also share information with my colleagues that will help them provide better care. I am a resource person on the night shift if anyone has questions or needs help finding things. I have been at the hospital for 10 years and can usually help other staff with what they need. CollaborationThe registered nurse collaborates with patients, family, and others in the conduct of nursing practices (ANA, 2004, p. 38). As a registered nurse I work with several other departments to coordinate patients care. Some of the departments I work with the most are Radiology and Respiratory. As an example, we try to schedule tests and treatments so that the patient does not get overly tired. I also try to have respiratory treatments coincide with vital signs during the night. Therefore minimizing the number of times a patient is woke up. At West Shore Medical Center we have an Interdisciplinary team that meets 3 times a week to discuss the needs of our patients and the nurse is the person who leads the discussion and follows up with the physician about what the team has recommended. EthicsThe registered nurse integrates ethical provisions in all areas of practice (ANA, 2004, p.39). I am a patient advocate for my patients and maintain their confidentiality. I protect my patients’ rights and help them maintain their dignity in a very stressful time. As a registered nurse we are bound by a professional code of ethics (Code of ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements, 2001). It is my responsibility to follow the code of ethics in all my dealing with patients, their families and co-workers. In comparing my nursing practice with the code of ethic, I found that a faithfully adhere to them. ResearchThe registered nurse integrates research findings into practice (ANA, 2004, p. 40). As a nurse I am always collecting data, analyzing it and then making changes to my practice as needed. I make sure that any changes that I make to my practice do not interfere with policies and protocols set forth by the hospital. If they do then I will consult with my manager and co-workers explain the results of the research and determine with them if we want to take it to the Professional Practice Committee. There we can decide if we can make changes to the policies and protocol, if so then we can incorporate the research into our practice. Resource UtilizationThe registered nurse considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, cost, and impact on practice in the planning and delivery of nursing services (ANA, 2004, p. 41). As a nurse I look at the big picture when it comes to taking care of my patients. I consider what I can do to protect my patient and give them quality care. I look at what resource we have in the hospital and in the community. Some of the resources we have in the hospital are dietician, social worker, diabetic education, physical therapy and occupation therapy. The resources in our community are Council on Aging, Family Independent Agency and Community Mental Health to name a few. LeadershipThe registered nurse provides leadership in the professional practice setting and the profession (ANA, 2004, p. 42). The way I provide leadership is by being a team player, a role model to the rest of the staff and being calm when things are very hectic. I will help another nurse if I see she is struggling. I have taken an admission when it was not my turn because the nurse who was up for the admission had too many things going on to safely take the admission. I try to provide encouragement when I see a co-worker having a hard time and listen to them vent in the appropriate area about a situation. I have also agreed to stay over and work when it was another nurse’s turn to be mandated and she had to come back the next night. It is up to the nurse to be the leader when it comes to providing care. GoalsFive year goalsMy goal for the next five years is to complete my Bachelor degree. Then I would like to receive my Medical Surgical Certification (RN-BC). To receive the certification I have to take a test at one of the testing center provided by the American Nurses Credentials Center (ANCC). The ANCC is a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association (ANA). Once you receive the certification you need to renew every 5 years. To be eligible to take the test I have to fill out an application and provide proof of the following criteria: have a minimum of 2000 hours of clinical practice, hold a current RN license, have practiced the equivalent of 2 years and completed 30 hours of continue education in Medical/Surgical (ANCC). I have already completed most of the criteria required to test and plan on taking the test within the next year.Ten year goalsMy ten year goals are very simple; I plan on continuing to take classes that enhance my nursing career. One area I am very interested in is Nursing Informatics. According to the ANA “Nursing informatics (NI) is a specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice. NI supports consumers, patients, nurses, and other providers in their decision-making in all roles and settings. This support is accomplished through the use of information structures, information processes, and information technology." (ANA, 2001, p. 17). I am planning on taking some classes in nursing informatics but am still undecided if I will be going for my Masters degree. My Development PlanI plan on continuing to take classes and use all the resources available to me. I have a good support system of co-workers who have received their BSN or who are in the process of taking classes now. We talk often and offer support to each other when it is needed. I am looking at this program one semester at a time. If I concentrate on the whole process I will be over whelmed. So for now I will deal with the classes I am now taking and worry about the others for next semester. I am going to evaluate my progress to the ultimate goal on a daily basis. If I feel that I am falling behind or have trouble understanding something, I will contact my instructor or post to the discussion board for help. I can also access my support group of co-workers for help. I am also realistic that life has a way of interfering with our goals if that happens then I will just have to take a step back and reassess the situation and go on from there.
