Subject: Recertification

Purpose: Verification of diplomats ongoing education or current knowledge in the field of urologic health care; establishment of procedural and administrative standards for the recertification process.

ELIGIBILITY

1. Current licensure for RN, PA, LPN/LVN or NPs.

2. Current CBUNA certification.

3. Verification of a minimum of 800 hours of practice experience during the previous 3-year certification period.

4. CBUNA recognizes 3 distinctive components of nursing practice: service, education, and research. Practice may be direct or indirect and include acute or long-term care, clinics/offices, home care/community health, surgery, education, research, and administration.

PROCEDURE

1. At the time of recertification, all applicants will be sent the same recertification notice. Upon completion of the application they will become eligible for recertification.

2. Recertification is required every 3 years. It may be accomplished by written re-examination, with the exception of the PA, or through continuing education contact hours. Fifty contact hours must be earned during the three year certification period with a minimum of 36 contact hours (CE’s) being urology specific.

Contact hours must be documented with copies of certificates of attendance at approved seminars or conference, copies of published materials, presentations, or multimedia productions (ie., video, audio tapes, or computer generated discs)

Category A: Urologic Health Care (minimum of 36 contact hours, maximum of 10 contact hours for medical /renal topics)

a. Contact hours awarded for attendance at seminars and conferences with content specific for urologic health care and are accredited as an approver/provider of continuing education, such as the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), a state board of nursing, nursing association or Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).

b. Nursing and professional publications and presentations specific to urologic health care and are accredited approver/provider of continuing education.

Book chapter (author/co-author) - 5 contact hours per chapter, maximum 25 CE’s per recertification period

Journal article (author) - 5 contact hours, maximum 10 CE’s per recertification period

Multimedia presentation/lecture - A 60 minute presentation will equal 3 contact hours, in recognition of preparation time, for a maximum 9 CE’s per recertification period. The applicant must be the only presenter for the 60 minute presentation.

Research abstracts – published/presented - 2 contact hours, maximum 6 CE’s per recertification period

Editor textbook - 15 contact hours

Unpublished doctoral dissertation - 15 contact hours

Research proposal submitted to a federal agency/foundation or industry - 15 contact hours

Study site coordinator - 5 contact hours per study, maximum 2 studies for total of 10 CE’s per recertification period. If applicant’s primary job is a study coordinator, the study cannot be used for recertification

Editors, assistant editors, and manuscript reviewers: 1 manuscript = 1 contact hour, 2 manuscripts = 3 contact hours, and 3 or more manuscripts = 5 CE’s per recertification period.

c. Independent study (home study) by an accredited approver/provider of continuing education within the three-year certification period. (Verification of a passing score is needed before submitting contact hours awarded by the study.)

d. CME - 1 Continuing Medical Education credit equals 1 contact hour.

e. Membership on a national/local board or national/local committee - A 1 hour meeting or 1 hour conference call = 1 contact

hour, maximum 10 CE’s per recertification period.

Category B: General Nursing, Health Care, and Academic

a. Academic courses must be biopsychosocial content.

Each semester hour = 15 contact hours

Each quarter hour = 10 contact hours

b. Contact hours earned for general nursing or health care same as Category A.

c. Professional publications or presentations in general nursing or health care same as Category A.

d. Independent study in general nursing or health care same as Category A.

e. CME- 1 Continuing Medical Education credit equals 1 contact hour.

3. Should the candidate fail to meet the minimum requirements for recertification, the written examination must be taken. A passing score must be attained to be recertified. If the candidate does not attain a passing score, the certification process must start anew with fee schedules as stated in the certification policy.

GRACE PERIOD

Applications for recertification will be accepted for 3 months after the expiration date of certification. During this time, you may not use your CBUNA credentials. A late fee of $50.00 will be charged. During the grace period, January 1 through March 31, you may utilize the continuing education option only. If you have met the requirements for recertification, you will be recertified with no lapse in your certification dates. Applications received after the 3-month grace period will be declared ineligible.

AUDIT PROCESS

Ten percent (10%) of the recertification applications will be audited by the CBUNA Executive Secretary.

FEES FOR RECERTIFICATION

A. Contact Hours (all certifications)

SUNA Members: CUA/CURN $150.00 Nonmembers $225.00

SUNA Members: CUCNS/CUPA/CUNP $175.00 Nonmembers $250.00

B. To recertify by written examination, complete application as directed.

C. A $25.00 fee will be charged for resubmitted applications due to incompleteness.

D. Requests for refunds must be in writing and are subject to a $25.00 administrative fee.

MISCELLANEOUS

1. All administrative fees as stated in the certification Policy 22.0 apply to recertification by written examination.

2. Certification expires December 31. Accrual of continuing education credits for the next three-year cycle begins on January 1.

3. Candidates not accomplishing recertification at the end of three years will have the designation "CU" dropped from all SUNA

and CBUNA records. Continued use of "CU" is inappropriate and at variance with Board policies on recertification.

4. CBUNA Board members due recertification will have the same options as other certified diplomates, but the fee will be waived.

5. The Board or Executive Committee has the authority to pass/defer/fail candidates for recertification.
