Ancient Egyptian Tomb Project

Your task is to create a “tomb” that tells us about a Middle or New Kingdom pharaoh. Carefully follow the directions below to prepare the tomb of your selected pharaoh.

Creating the Tomb . . . An Overview:

You will need a shoebox (or another box of similar size) and plain wrapping paper/construction paper. Cover your shoebox neatly, securing the paper tightly to the box and lid. You may also spray paint/paint your box instead of wrapping it or find a box that is already a neutral color (tan, white, black, brown). Remember… Egyptians spent a lot of time and energy preparing the tombs of their pharaohs.

You will be decorating the outside of your tomb with important information you learn about your Middle or New Kingdom pharaoh. On the outside of the tomb, you will need 3 facts per side (total 12 facts) along with other Egyptian hieroglyphics/drawings. The lid of your tomb will be designed with a cartouche bearing your Pharaoh’s name. Please make sure you use a hieroglyphic for each letter of the name. Finally, the inside of the tomb will reveal important clues about the ancient Egyptian culture and your Egyptian pharaoh. So, travel back in time and begin work on this important artifact from ancient history. Steps for a successful project are outlined below.

Outside of Tomb Your Facts about Your Pharaoh

KQ: What made your pharaoh unique from others? What were some of

his/her major accomplishments?

Research information about your pharaoh. You can use sites such as: , , , and .

* Remember you need to find 12 facts about your chosen pharaoh that includes interesting/unique information to place on the outside of your tomb. Facts should be well developed, typed and written in sentence form. Sentences must be complex sentences not simple ones. Remember…. Future historians (your peers) will depend on the information provided on your tomb to understand your pharaoh. Cut out facts and glue them to the side of your tomb in a creative way. You must also have some type of Egyptian artwork/hieroglyphic on each side of the tomb as decoration. Egyptians loved colors so don’t forget to add some.

Lid Your Cartouche

KQ: What is a cartouche and how was it used in ancient Egypt?

For this section of your tomb, trace and cut out a cartouche from the pattern provided by your teacher. Using the hieroglyphic alphabet as a reference, design a cartouche of your pharaoh’s name. The size of your hieroglyphics should be proportionate to the size of your cartouche. Don’t forget to color the cartouche! The ancient Egyptians were a very colorful people!

Inside The Artifacts

KQ: What is an artifact and why is it important to history? What do

artifacts tell about Egyptian culture/your pharaoh?

Inside the tomb, you will need to create two rooms that connect together. One room will be the treasure room that will contain various items that would be left for the pharaoh for the afterlife. You need to have at least 5 items located in this room that would have been found in a real tomb. The second room will be the burial chamber. You will need to create a sarcophagus with a mummy inside it and include 2 additional artifacts in this room. You will also need to decorate the walls of the rooms. This can be done using pictures/items found on the Internet, drawing hieroglyphics, content related stickers, other Egyptian symbols, paint, etc. The artifacts that you place in these rooms can be real (size permitting!), or a model of the item, or an illustration/picture of the actual artifact. Only one artifact can be a picture.

Fact Sheet: You must also include a fact sheet that explains the artifacts, sarcophagus, and mummy that you placed in your tomb. You need to have at least one sentence explaining each artifact, sarcophagus, and mummy. The sentences about the items need to be factual information. You need to explain why the artifacts you used were important to the pharaoh. All facts need to be written using complete sentences and be typed. The final draft of your fact sheet will be placed inside the tomb.

Bibliography: You must include a bibliography with your project using Noodle Tools. This bibliography must be printed out and handed in with your final project. You must have at least 2 different sources listed on your bibliography.

Due Date: Jan. 20, 2017

On this date, your tomb must be finished and ready to present to the class. You will share your tomb with peers.
