THE POST

We welcome applications from candidates whose research expertise will complement and strengthen existing research expertise and teaching in Ancient History (Greek) in the Department of Archaeology, Classics, and Egyptology, which is situated within the School of Histories, Languages and Cultures. You will hold a PhD in a relevant discipline, have well-established research interests and a record of scholarly publications of international excellence as appropriate for the level of experience. Experience of teaching at undergraduate level is expected; experience of teaching at postgraduate level and of course design are welcome.

In your statement we specifically invite you to set out your research agenda/plan for the next five years and to explain how you see your research activity contributing to the Department’s priorities of maintaining and further developing its international research excellence, of increasing the number of postgraduate research students, of increasing external research funding, of generating significant research impact, and of helping the Department to maintain and further our links with archives, museums and galleries in Liverpool and the North-West more broadly.

You will be expected to contribute to teaching at all levels within the Department. This will include the development and delivery of your own modules as well as contributions to team-taught modules including contributions to methodological and historiographical modules which may lie outside your area of specialism. You will also be expected to undertake administrative roles within the Department, the School and the University as appropriate.

LECTURER IN ANCIENT GREEK HISTORY

We are looking for a scholar with research interests in Ancient Greek history and/or historiography. Applicants are encouraged to demonstrate strong research plans that relate to and supplement other areas of research expertise in the Department or School, such as interactions between the Ancient Greek world and other civilizations (Persia, Hellenistic Egypt, Rome), socio-economic history and the epigraphic record, historiography and archaeology. As well as teaching in Greek history and historiography, you will be expected to teach Ancient Greek language as well as to be able to contribute to the Department's teaching more widely. The ability to teach a second ancient language would be an advantage.

THE SCHOOL OF HISTORIES, LANGUAGES AND CULTURES

The School of Histories, Languages and Cultures was formed in 2010 as part of a major reorganisation of the academic structures across the University of Liverpool. Located within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the School is an integrated, outward-looking hub for world class research, undertaken with partners across the University and around the world.

The School is home to around 120 research active members of staff and 120 postgraduate research students as well as over 1500 undergraduate and 125 Masters students studying across more than a dozen subject areas within our five departments. In our research and in our teaching we explore culture and society from the origins of humanity to modern day politics. We are a community of scholars working across a vast number of disciplines and united by our research interests in history and heritage, languages and literatures, and power, conflict and conflict resolution.

A member of the Russell Group of leading UK research universities, the University of Liverpool is a world-leader in innovation, attracting more than £93 million in research commissions each year, while considering the persistent enhancement of the student experience as one of its core strengths.
