We have been experimenting on animals for years. GIVE STATISTIC Indeed, since the numbers were first recorded in 1982, we have killed an estimated 2 million lab rats, mice, dogs, fish, and birds in the name of science (Johnson 23). In order for scientists to create new drugs, they have to be able to test them. Researchers have found that many animals such as monkeys and rabbits have similar physical processes to humans. Watching how a new drug affects an animal makes it possible to find out how new drugs might affect the human body. If a drug produces adverse effects in humans, it is probably not fit to use on humans. However, if a drug works in a lab rat, it can be used to treat diseases in animals, so all species benefit from this science. QUOTE AN EXPERT/GIVE EXAMPLE Ellen Baker (2019), researcher at the University of California, agrees, stating, “Animal testing has been instrumental in saving endangered species from extinction, including the black-footed ferret, the California condor, and the tamarins of Brazil” (44).Many people argue that animal testing is cruel. GIVE EXAMPLE According to PETA President Sally Young (2019), over 30 species are regularly subjected to such terrible acts as “force feeding, food and water deprivation, the infliction of burns and other wounds to study the healing process, the infliction of pain to study its effects and remedies, and killing by carbon dioxide asphyxiation, neck-breaking, decapitation, or other means” (212). Tim Dillard, spokesperson for The Department of Agriculture, also reported in Jan. 2020 that research facilities used over 300,000 animals in activities involving pain in just one year (78). In the U.S. and most countries around the world, governments set standards for animal treatment, and laboratories have to follow strict guidelines to prevent mistreatment or suffering. These guidelines were set by the Animal Welfare Act of 1966 and regulate housing standards such as temperature, room size, and access to clean food and water. QUOTE EXPERT Rachel Rubino, attending veterinarian and director of the animal facility at Cold Springs Harbor Laboratory, confirms the notion of ethical treatment: “Most people who work with research animals love those animals and want to give them the best lives possible, treat them humanely. At Cedars-Sinai Medical Center’s animal research facility, dogs are given exercise breaks twice daily to socialize with their caretakers and other dogs, and a toy rotation program provides opportunities for play. It all comes down to the fine line that has to be drawn between man and animals. Animals do not have a conscience or ability to make reasoned judgments like humans, so they are inferior and placed on this earth to feed, clothe, and help us. When you compare the small number of animals that may be hurt during an experiment to the huge number of lives that can be saved, there is no question about the right thing to do.3841750219075MY SENTENCE VS.
