A Samaritan's Story
"You saved my husband and my marriage."
That's what one woman stood up and said last December at a short program on depression at Our Lady of Guadalupe facilitated by Our Community Health Worker Audelia "Delia" De La Cruz . The program featured Patricia Garza, LPC, who spoke about depression and it affects on individuals and families. Coming to us from Kerrville, Patricia is the only bilingual counselor serving our county; she works with the Center's patients on Wednesday mornings and with Needs Council clients Wednesday afternoons and all day on Tuesdays.
How many times have you heard one of the biggest areas of need in healthcare is for mental health services? For a lot of doctor's offices, counseling is the missing therapeutic piece--especially at a charitable clinic where patients cannot afford to see a therapist. Because of your donations, we can offer counseling services at an affordable rate: the first visit is free and follow-up visits cost $10 each.
Of course, there are countless stories in addition to the woman mentioned above who stood up in December. Another man at that event had said he had considered committing suicide, but Patricia was able to help him through a difficult time.
It's not just depression that needs addressing; Patricia sees a variety of concerns. Some people are facing domestic violence issues, and she shepherds them through how to care for themselves and their children. Some are facing life-threatening illnesses. And some people just have more problems and challenges than they think they can face on their own.
Thank you for helping us offer this important program to our patients. To our healthcare providers, it is a luxury a lot of physicians do not have. To our patients, it is something they never would have received otherwise.
GSC Chapel to be Dedicated in
Memory of Mary Ransleben
By John Willome I think the first time I met Mary Ransleben was shortly after I arrived at the Good Samaritan Center in 2006. Our building was less than two years old then, and she had taken a particular interest in our chapel, overseeing the design of the stained glass window facing the outdoor fountain, putting together the old church pews, and working with IHS Studios to make the altar and the cross. When I met her, however, she was bothered that there was too much glare coming in from the outside window and it was dulling the colors in the stained glass window. Her solution was to have the windows tinted, just slightly. It was enough to take off some glare, but still light enough to allow people to enjoy the sunlight. Our entire community lost Mary this last November, just before Thanksgiving. I say our entire community because she left her mark in most of the places you look. At her funeral, her family mentioned her many "projects." "She always had a project," one of them said. For our part, we are grateful she made our chapel one of her projects, and the board of directors voted to dedicate this "project" of hers in her memory. To give us time to get the word out, we are holding off the dedication ceremony until Tuesday, April 11 at 5:30 p.m. It will be an informal presentation, but we want to invite the public to join us in honoring this remarkable woman, her loving spirit, and her quest to share God's beauty with as many people as possible.
Our Wish List:
$750, medical scale with handrails. $250, desk for Medical Assistant

Fundraising Dinner Set for May 9
This is going to be fun! We hope you will come to St. Mary's Parish Holy Family Center on May 9 as Carey Dyer joins us for an exclusive evening of great food and entertainment. You probably know Carey from his mixture of covering classic artists like Roy Orbison and Elvis, to his comedy with a Christian edge. Tickets are $100 each ($60 of which is deductible ) or a table of 8 is $1,000 ($680 is deductible) To get your tickets, fill out the reply card on page 7 and return it to the Center by April 27 (keeping in mind that seating is limited and we normally sell out early), or you can purchase your tickets online at our website: . And please remember our dinners are all-inclusive: your ticket price includes dinner, complimentary beer and wine, plus all that fun!
