BIBLE DISCUSSION GROUP STUDY QUESTIONS

BIBLE DISCUSSION GROUP STUDY QUESTIONS

In preparation for Sunday, March 10, 2019 Passage: Revelation 20:4-6

Memory Passage: Revelation 20:4

DAY 1 – ASK FOR INSIGHT READ THE PASSAGE

a) Read Revelation 20:1-10. Write a summary paragraph explaining what you learned last week in your study of vs. 1-3.

b) Ask Good Questions: What good questions do you still need to answer concerning vs. 4-6 (we will cover 7-10 next week)?

DAY 2 – ASK FOR INSIGHT READ THE PASSAGE

a) Read Revelation 20:1-10. Where are the thrones (v. 4) located, and how do you know? (Hint: Remember to consider the context of Revelation and where thrones have been throughout the book.)

b) Who are those who sit upon the thrones with the authority to judge (or probably better and grammatically possible, “those for whom judgment was passed”)? (Hint: Remember the hermeneutical principle of Biblical Theology and consider passages such as Daniel 7, esp. vs. 9-14, 18, 22; 2 Timothy 2:11-13; Revelation 2:26-27; 3:21; 4:14; 11:16; 18:20, et. al.).

c) In the rest of v. 4, are there two groups mentioned, or two descriptions of one group (i.e. “the souls of those . . .” & “those who had not . . .”)? How do you know, and why does figuring it out matter?

DAY 3 – ASK FOR INSIGHT READ THE PASSAGE

a) Read Revelation 20:1-10. What does it mean that those mentioned in v. 4 “came to life?”

b) In what way do these disembodied souls “reign” with Christ, and where does this reign take place, according to vs. 1-6?

c) To what does “the first resurrection” refer (take note that the first sentence in v. 5 is a parenthetical thought, and the first resurrection continues the description of those who came to life in v. 4)?

d) Who are “the rest of the dead” (v. 5) and when is the end of the 1000 years at which time they “come to life?” Do they come to life in the same way those in v. 4 come to life? Explain your answer.

DAY 4 – ASK FOR INSIGHT READ THE PASSAGE

a) Read Revelation 20:1-10. What is “the second death” (v. 6), and why does it have “no power” over those who participate in the first resurrection?

b) Explain the phrase “but they will be priests of God and of Christ” (v. 6) and how it relates to “reigning with (Christ) for a thousand years (remember what you learned in 1:6 & 5:10 in light of Ex. 19:6).

c) When in relation to the 1000-year reign do the events of each section take place (i.e. vs. 1-3, 4-6, & 7-10?)?

d) Re-read Revelation 12:7-12 and write down all of the similarities you see between 12:7-12 and 20:1-6. How does 12:7-12 help you understand the events symbolized in 20:1-6?

DAY 5 – ASK FOR INSIGHT READ THE PASSAGE

a) Read Revelation 20:1-10. Summarize your view of the 1000-year reign as it is presented in 20:1-6 by answering the following questions: (1) Are the 1000 years literal or symbolic, and on what do you base your answer? (2) When do the 1000 years take place in history? (3) From what is Satan bound and why must he be bound during the millennial reign? What happens to saints who die during the millennial reign? (4) Who reigns during the millennial kingdom and what does that reign entail?

b) Though we will cover vs. 7-10 next week, v. 7 begins with the phrase “and when the thousand years were ended, Satan will be released from his prison.” When does this happen in history and what is the purpose of his release?

c) As with last week, one’s view of the millennial reign dictates how we apply these verses to our lives. So write down at least 5 applications of vs. 4-6 that flow from your answers in sections (a) and (b) above.
