Outline and Projects

• In some story sections, Students will answer questions while reading the story. These questions come from all levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy of Questioning. In other sections, students will answer reader response journal questions. Answering such questions brings the writing to life and make it real for the readers.

• Students will complete projects—individual, small group and whole group while reading.

• Students will have quizzes on the vocabulary and reading.

• Students will take a test and help create a class mural of The Giver.

Introduction: TCR Pre-reading activities, class discussion on utopian/dystopian literature, view clip of The Giver. Preview Mr. Riedl website Giver resources.

Class Discussion on “Stirrings,” the church’s view, ways people in our society learns to control urges.

Section Questions

Jonas’s Eye Drawing: Make a large drawing of what you think one or both of Jonas’s eyes look like. Your drawing may be of Jonas’s entire face or just the eye(s) themselves. Surrounding the drawing, include at least five descriptions of how Jonas is different from others. These descriptions should come from the text. You can include specific examples or more general descriptions. This will be graded on: 1: the quality of the descriptions and examples; 2: the art work (creativity, color, neatness, detail); 3: overall effort.

Reader Response Journal

Perfect Puzzler (sheet 56). Create a crossword puzzle using your vocabulary words and definitions. Use the Discovery Education web site to do this. (At the Discovery Education site, they call crossword puzzles criss-cross puzzles.) You will share this puzzle with a partner later on. You should have at least 15 words in your puzzle.

The puzzle title should be the following: first/last name Vocabulary Chapters 1-5. When you print your puzzle, be sure to print two copies. Fill in the answers for one of the copies. Turn both copies in.

Names Jonas and Gabriel: Research the names Jonas and Gabriel (both are biblical). Write up your findings in 2 good paragraphs which relate the names to the characters in the novel. Why do you this Lois Lowry chose these names for the characters? (Think about how the characters in the story might be similar to the Jonas or Gabriel in the Bible.)

Community Careers (18): Whole group activity

Word Webs: You will work with a partner. With your partner, decide on four vocabulary words you will create word webs for. The fifth word you should create a word web for is “transgression.” “Transgression” can be found on page 86 of the novel. Use sheets 71-73 as a guide for creating the word webs.

Vocabulary Challenge: use a vocabulary word at least ten times in a day. Chart use of word.
