Why Doesn’t a Bear Have a Long Tail?

One afternoon, a mouse deer was sitting in a pit, eating nuts. He heard a tiger was coming closer and he thought the tiger was going to eat him.

The mouse deer was very scared and his heart beat so hard.

Then, an idea came to his mind and he made a loud noise of chewing nuts, saying, "Wow, how delicious is this tiger's eye!"

He repeated it for five times.

Tiger, the king of jungle, was so scared to hear that and he moved back.

Tiger met a bear on the way and he said, "Hey, Bear. Do you hear what did the animal on the pit over there, eating tiger's eyes?"

Bear said, "I don't know, Your Majesty,"

Tiger said, "Then let's see."

Bear replied "But I'm scared, Your Majesty"

Tiger said, "Don't worry. Let's make a deal with me. We're going to stay together, uniting our tails. If anything happens, both of us will face it."

Tiger and Bear tied their tails and moved into the pit with full cautions because they were expecting to see a big enemy.

The mouse deer was surprised again.

He thought quickly and yelled, "Oh, that's the glutton tiger! His father owes us a white bear, now he will pay us with a black bear. Come on black, over here."

Bear was so surprised. "Hey, it's a Tiger's trick! He wanted to use me to pay his father's debt!"

Bear went into a panic, which also made Tiger panic because they were tied each other.

Accidentally, Tiger stepped on the Bear's tail, then jumped. Bear was beaten on the ground hard, and his tail was cut off.

That's why Bear doesn't have long tail.

Thus the mouse deer escaped from the tiger twice.

a) The underworld went to Hades (Pluto). He is not only called the God of Death but also the God of Wealth because of the precious metals hidden in the earth.

b) The story goes that Cronus learned that one of his children would overthrow him. To prevent this, every time Rhea gave birth to a child he would swallow it. However, when their son Zeus (Jupiter) was born, Rhea had him hidden on the island of Crete. Then she presented Cronus with a stone, instead of the baby, wrapped in swaddling clothes. Cronus swallowed the stone, and Zeus grew to manhood. Zeus then forced his father to disgorge his brothers and sisters, and with their help overthrew Cronus and the other Titans.

c) The greatest power in this new universe went to Zeus, who ruled over all gods and men from his palace high on mount Olympus. He was the God of justice and the God of oaths and hospitality. He married his sister Hera, and together they became the heads of a divine family made up of themselves and ten other gods and goddesses.

d) In the beginning, according to the ancient Greeks, there was Chaos – a great mass of darkness without shape or sound or meaning. Out of this grew Night and Erebus, the shadowy world under the earth, which is the home of death. The came a wonderful thing called Love, which produced Light and Day. Mother earth, called Gaea, appeared next with Heaven’s blue, star-studded dome on high.

e) One brother, Poseidon, ruled the sea. He always carried a three-pronged spear. When he drove his golden chariot over the waters, they became calm and smooth before him.

f) Now that Zeus and his brothers and sisters had power over the universe, they drew lots to see who should control different kingdoms

g) Monsters first inhabited this mythological world, but in time giants called Titan drove them out. Cronus was the ruling Titan, and Rhea, his sister, was his queen

The Princess and the Bowling Ball

Once upon a time there was a Prince. And this Prince’s dad and mum somehow got it into their royal heads that no princess would be good enough for their boy unless she could feel a pea trough one hundred mattresses .

So it should come no surprise that the Prince had a very hard time finding a Princess. Every time he met a nice girl, his mum and dad would pile one hundred mattresses on top of a pea and then invite her to sleep over.

When the Princess came down for breakfast, the queen would ask, “How did you sleep dear?”.

The Princess would politely say, “Fine, thank you.”

And the King would show her to the door.

Now this went for three years. And of course nobody ever felt the pea under on hundred mattresses .Then the Prince set up a plan. He invited a Princess to sleep over in the palace. The Prince told her what must she said in the next morning.

When the Princess came down for breakfast the next morning, the Queen asked, “ How did you sleep, dear?”.

“This might sound odd” said the Princess. “But I think you need another mattress. I felt like I was sleeping on a lump as big as bowling ball.”

The King and Queen were satisfied, and the Prince and The Princess were married. And everyone lived happily, though maybe not completely honestly, ever after.

Nasreddin was a good farmer. He had a large garden and many donkeys. But Nasredin was always foolish.

Nasreddin used to work in his garden helped by his son, Simon. They worked hard everyday. They never went to the market which was four miles away from their village, while the other villagers often did.

One day Nasreddin said to Simon, “A lot of people often go to the market day comes, but we never go.” Simon replied, “you’re right and we should go, too.”

“But we don’t have money.”

“We can sell our biggest donkey to buy food and drink in the market.”

When the market day came, Nasreddin and Simon with their biggest donkey went to the market. Nasreddin led the donkey and Simon followed them.

When they were walking, a villager greeted them with smile. “Poor Nasreddin, donkey is for riding. Why do you walk? Ride on your donkey,” Nasreddin nodded and soon he rode on his donkey while Simon walking behind them.

fter half a mile walking, another villager said, “Why are you riding on your donkey while your son is walking? He is now too

tired.” Hearing this, Nasreddin offered Simon to sit behind him on the donkey’s back. They were too heavy for the donkey. They were so heavy that it was difficult to walk.

A man by the road asked Nasreddin, “Are you going to the market?” Nasreddin agreed, “It’s true. We are going to sell our donkey for the money”. The man commented,” You are too heavy for the donkey. He will get tired, ill and die before you reach the market.

Soon Nasreddin and Simon climbed down the donkey. They wanted their donkey healthy and fat to sell. They carried their donkey on their shoulders. When they reached the market, everybody got surprised and suddenly someone asked, “Is your donkey ill, Nasreddin?” “No, it’s not. It is healthy.” Said Nasreddin angrily. “But why are you carrying it on your shoulders? People usually ride on their donkeys.” said the other. :We want it fatter and become more expensive”, Nasreddin replied. (Nasruddin: The Clever Man, 2004)

As it happened

One very spooky encounter with a UFO ( an unidentified flying object ) occurred in May 1974 involving a couple driving from Zimbabwe to South Africa.

As they carefully drove throughout the night they saw a flashing blue-white light that was going on and off in a slow, steady rhythm. Shortly after noticing this, the car was covered in a bright circle of light. Inside the car it suddenly became very cold. The couple wrapped themselves in thick blankets and turned on the heater but they still shivered.

Then they began to act very strangely. Suddenly the headlights went off, the bakes failed, the steering wheel locked and the fuel gauge showed empty. Next the car began speeding up and raced along the road at 190 kilometres an hour. To one side of the car, the UFO continued to follow.

The driver and his passenger lost consciousness. When they awoke they were near the small town of Fort Victoria. The car’s odometer showed that only 12 kilometres had been traveled, yet the distance from where they first saw the UFO to Fort Victoria was 290 kilometres.

Although the couple’s description of what happened contained plenty of details, many people find it hard to believe that UFOs do exist. (Bahan Pelatihan Terintegrasi, 2004)

Piranha fish are the fiercest animals in the world. They live in the fresh water rivers of South America, from Venezuela to Northern Argentina. These fish hunt in groups, called schools. They usually eat other fish smaller than themselves. Sometimes Piranhas will attack and eat each other.

There are about 18 kinds of piranha fish. Only four kinds attack man. Piranhas have large head and short thick bodies. They are usually about 20 cm ( 9 inches long) but one kind can be as much as 60 cm (two feet). It lives in the Sao Francisco river from Eastern Brazil. It is one of the most dangerous fish.

Cheetahs are members of the cat family and are the world’s fastest land animals. They inhabit open grasslands and scrub in Africa, southern Asia and Middle East.

Cheetahs are often mistaken for leopards and have many similar features.

Their distinguishing marks are the long, teardrop-shaped lines on each side of the nose from the corner of the eyes to the mouth.

The animals have muscular and powerful bodies which are aerodynamically perfect for short, fast runs. Their bendy backs keep the body flexible as they sprint.

They can accelerate from standing to 40 mph in three strides and to a full speed of 70 mph within seconds. Cheetah’s feet are like running shoes and have grips and spikes to dig into the ground. The grips are special ridges on the animal’s footpads and the claws act as spikes. These claws stay out all the time. This is different from other cats, whose claws tuck away in special sheaths in their paws.

Cheetah are carnivores and eat gazelle and small antelope. A long tail helps the cheetah keep its balance as it serves after its prey, using large eyes that point forward to judge distance accurately. Once the cheetah has pounched, the victim is gripped by the throat to stop it breathing. However, the cheetah has weak jaws and small teeth and cannot always protect its kills or its young, especially if tired out after a run.

Female cheetahs gave birth to an average of three young that they rear by themselves. Once fully grown, the animals usually live alone, though males sometimes form small groups. Most cheetahs live about twelve years.

Cheetah are now an endangered species and many conservationists are trying to help protect the habitats of these interesting creatures.(English Exercise Book: 2007)

Silkworm live for only two or three days after lying eggs. About 36,000 eggs are laid, and these are carefully stored at the silkworm farm until they are ready to hatch. The eggs hatch into caterpillars, which feed on mulberry leaves. Soon the caterpillars are ready to spin their cocoons. Not all caterpillars can spin silk cocoons. Only the caterpillars of silkworm moth known as “ Bombyx mori” can do such spinning.

The caterpillar has a special glands which secrete liquid silk through its lower lip. The liquid produced later hardens to form fine strands. The caterpillar makes its cocoons using these strands. The threads on the outside of the cocoon are tough, while those inside are soft and smooth.

Some fully-spun cocoons are heated. This kills the pupa inside. The cocoons are then put into hot water to loosen the fine thread. Finally, these threads are reeled off the cocoons.

For many years people believed that the cleverest animals after man were the chimpanzees. Now, however, there is proof that dolphins may be even cleverer than these big apes.

Although a dolphin lives in the sea, it is not a fish. It is a mammal. It is in many ways, therefore, like a human being.

Dolphins have a simple language. They are able to talk to one another. It may be possible for man to learn how to talk to dolphins. But this will not be easy because dolphins cannot hear the kind of sounds man make. If man wants to talk to dolphins, therefore, he will have to make a third language which both he and dolphins can understand.

The Indonesian Archipelago

Indonesia is a country in Southeast Asia that consists of more than 13,000 islands. The islands lie along the equator and extend more than 5,000 kilometers. Many of the islands cover only a few square kilometers. But about a half of New Guinea and three quarters of Borneo also belong to Indonesia. Both islands are the second-and-third largest islands in the world, after Greenland.

Many geographers divide the more than 13,600 islands of Indonesia into three groups: (1) the Greater Sunda Islands, (2) the lesser Sunda Islands, and (3) the Mollucas. Indonesia also includes Irian Jaya, which is part of New Guinea.

The Greater Sunda includes Borneo, Sulawesi, Java and Sumatera. The Lesser Sunda Islands extend from Bali eastward to the Timor. The Mollucas lie between Sulawesi and New Guinea. The western part of New Guinea is called Irian Jaya, an Indonesian territory. Compared to the other regions, Irian Jaya is the most thinly populated. (UNAS SMP:2007)

The story you’ve just heard is a narrative text. Someone tells a narrative text in order to entertain, stimulate emotion or to teach.

A narrative text has tree elements or parts: the orientation, complication and resolution. The orientation introduces main characters in a setting of place and time. The complication tells the problems of the story and how the main characters solve them. The resolution tells the ending of the story.

Ever since then, foxes have had their homes in holes in the ground and buffaloes have had humped shoulders. (A)

The foxes, thinking to escape from Nanabozho, ran away, dug holes in the ground, and hid themselves. But Nanabozho found them and gave them their punishment, "Because you where unkind to the birds, you shall always live in the cold ground." (B)

One day when Buffalo was racing across the plains, he went in the direction of the place where little birds live on the ground. They called to him and to the foxes that he was going where their nests were, but neither paid any attention to them. Buffalo raced on and trampled the bird's nest under his heavy feet. Even when he heard the birds crying, he ran on without stopping. (C)

No one knew that Nanabozho was near. But he had heard about the birds' ruined home, and was sorry for them. He ran ahead, got in front of Buffalo and the foxes, and stopped them. With his stick he hit Buffalo on the shoulders, hard. Fearing that he would receive another blow, Buffalo humped up his shoulders. But Nanabozho only said, "You shall always have a hump on your shoulders, from this day forth. And you shall always carry your head low for shame." (D)

Long ago, when the world was very young, the buffalo had no hump. He got his hump one summer because of his unkindness to birds. He liked to race across the prairies for fun. The foxes would run ahead of him and tell the little animals that their chief, the buffalo, was coming. (E)
