Foundations of Biomedical Sciences New for 20192828925247650VisionThe Walt Whitman Foundations of Biomedical Sciences Program provides a strong academic and practical foundation for students who want to pursue careers and further their study in medicine and biomedical science.BackgroundFor years many students from Walt Whitman have shown a strong interest in medicine. A common refrain often heard when students are asked, “What do you want to do in the future?” is “I want to become a doctor!” It is usually said with enthusiasm and conviction. Students at Whitman have excelled in biological sciences in the past both in the classroom and in practical experiences like internships and summer programs at local and national universities. We would like to offer a program that provides a framework for both academic classes and practical experiences that will prepare students to further study in biology, medicine and health. Geographically, the school is located about about two miles from the main campus of the National Institutes of Health. The wealth of resources in our community and Montgomery County, Maryland along with the interests of our students, makes Whitman an idea location for a high school program that lays a solid foundation to prepare students careers as nurses, doctors, physical therapists, medical technicians, biomedical researchers, and more. Initially the program is open to any student currently in the Whitman attendance area that is in good academic standing and successfully makes progress towards meeting the goals and expectations of the program. Student from traditionally underrepresented groups in will be recruited and encouraged to participate.
