Course: AP Physics C Teacher: Mr. Zahur Text: Physics For Scientists And Engineers w/ Modern Physics by Randall Knight 4th Edition Phone: (818) 595-7500 Email: z.zahur@ Room: C21 Course Description: AP Physics C is a second year physics course. This course is designed for students who have taken AP Physics 1 as their first year physics course. It is highly recommended to have completed a Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus math course and be currently enrolled in AP Calculus or a higher math course. AP Physics C is actually two courses: AP Physics C – Mechanics (1st semester) and AP Physics C - Electricity and Magnetism (2nd Semester). AP Physics C - Mechanics and AP Physics C - Electricity and Magnetism together are the equivalent of the first year of an introductory, calculus-based college physics course. AP Physics C - Mechanics uses calculus to cover Kinematics, Forces, Momentum, Energy, Rotation and Oscillations. AP Physics C - Electricity and Magnetism uses calculus to cover Electrostatics, Electric Fields and Forces, Electric Potential, Electrical Currents and Circuits, Magnetic Fields and Forces, and Electromagnetic Induction and Waves. You will be taking two separate exams (2 hours each) Monday May 4th 2020 from noon to 4pm+. Course Objectives: This course prepares the student to pass the Advanced Placement Physics C tests in May and will prepare students for any future Physics classes taken in college. Policies: Cheating: Students who cheat on a test or assignment will be given a “0” grade for that test or assignment. Students who cheat a second time will receive a negative max score. Tardies: Students who are tardy will receive a lunch detention or other after school physics related work. Repeated offenses will result in administrative action as well. Homework: Assignments will be given on a per unit basis which are due on the day of the test. There is no make-up for unexcused or unverified absences. Excessive absences on or near the test day will require direct parental contact for make-up work to be accepted. Students absent on the day of a test must take the make-up exam upon the day of return and will not receive an extra credit question or a curve for the test if applicable. Cell Phones: Cell phones are not to be out during class except for the very specific purposes that I announce in class. Students who have cell phones out during class when not allowed or are using their phone for non-class activities will be subject to having their phones taken away. Class Website: News, photos and videos of the Physics club events and class activities will be posted there. This page will have our class calendars for HW and tests, lab and HW worksheets, videos and links to numerous useful and fun Physics sites. Grading Scale: A: 90-100% B: 80-89% C: 70-79% D: 60-69% F: Below 60% Grades are calculated according to the percentages given above (Page 1). Remember grades can be checked on Aeries by students and parents at any time. I will update the grades after every test. As with all AP courses, AP Physics C is a weighted grade for GPA calculations. Grades: Tests and Quizzes: 70% of the grade. Unit Tests: Given at the end of each unit and kept on file at school. Quizzes: May be given at any time. Final Project: You will have a project due at the end of each semester that will showcase your mastery of Mechanics and E&M. Semester Final: The semester final is worth two unit tests.Assignments: 30% of the grade Homework: HW is due for discussion/checking the next day. Generally, it will be stamped for completion the day after it is discussed in class. Work MUST be shown for full credit! Labs: There will be at least one laboratory period per unit, more if at all possible. These labs will be completed in class and write-ups will be turned in one or two days later. Make-up labs are to be done by appointment only. Students may not share lab data outside of their lab groups. Some labs may be individual only. Format of write-ups will be explained with each lab. Activities: These will consist of various types of tasks—demonstrations, review problems, supplemental problems, video, worksheets, etc. Class work: At the beginning of many class periods, there will be a short assignment to be completed at that time. These questions will deal with concepts of physics and may be on any topic. Textbook: Students will be given access to an electronic version of the textbook through mastering physics. Supplies Needed: Scientific or Graphing Calculator (See College Board Approved Calculator List) USB drive to save lab data Lecture Notebook (5.08cm 3 Ring Binder minimum): After taking AP Physics 1, you are expected to keep your notes and work organized in a 3-ring binder. This year, however, notebooks are not part of your grade. (But do it anyway please!)Lab Notebook (Composition Book): Each student will need a separate small lab notebook (composition book) for this class. Lab write-up final drafts will be done in this notebook. Scratch work for labs can be kept along with your class notes. Data charts and graphs are expected to be printed and glued into your composition notebook. Physics ClubPhysics Club is an optional club where students participate in lunch-time activities related to various physics topics. All current physics students are part of physics club (no sign-up necessary). Students may earn extra credit just by participating. Check the class white board for upcoming physics club activities. LaptopsStudents are required to bring their laptops to school fully charged everyday. We will use the laptops occasionally for our class. Students are allowed to take notes on the laptop using the stylus only. Students may not type up their notes barring any IEP or 504 accommodation. Laptops are used only for school work. Violations will result in negative consequences at my discretion. I have thoroughly read and understand the policies for Mr. Zahur’s AP Physics C class. I understand that I can check grades on Aeries at any time and that grades will be updated after every test. I give Mr. Zahur the rights to use photos and video content to showcase the class lessons and activities on the class website. I will strive to uphold the values of academic integrity. On my honor, I pledge that I will neither give nor receive unauthorized assistance. Student Name: _________ (Please print clearly) Student Signature:
