Technology: A TI-83/83+ or TI-84 or equivalent graphing calculator is REQUIRED for use in class, at home, and on the Advanced Placement exam. The school has calculators available for checkout for students unable to purchase one.

AP Statistics Notebook: Hardbound Graph Paper Composition notebook or dedicated multiple-ring binder.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Statistics is a science that studies and interprets data in order to draw objective conclusions about the world around us. Advanced Placement Statistics is equivalent to a one-semester introductory college statistics course. The course of study includes:

• Exploring ways of organizing and describing data, including analyzing variance and finding equations to fit data

• Techniques for designing and conducting studies along with methods of sample selection

• Ideas of probability and probability distributions

• Developing and testing hypotheses

COURSE GOALS

In Advanced Placement Statistics students are expected to learn:

Skills/Knowledge

• When and how to use techniques from the four areas of study in a variety of statistical settings

• Appropriate use of technology when analyzing data

• Use of correct terminology in creating convincing oral and written support for conclusions drawn from data

Habits of Mind

• To become knowledgeable consumers of published information based on statistics generated by studies.

• To use data wisely in drawing conclusions and making decisions in both personal and career settings

Moreover, the primary goal of this course is to prepare the student for the AP Statistics Exam in May. The content taught in this class will be the same concepts that are assessed on the exam. Students are expected to register and take AP Statistics Exam.

Homework/Participation:

Homework will be assigned each day and will be 25% of the overall grade. Unexcused late assignments can be submitted for partial credit until the end of the unit. Independent practice assignments and participation points will be part of the homework category. All assignments and daily notes will be recorded in the AP Statistics Notebook. The notebook will be checked randomly throughout the course of the semester and will be scored in the homework category.

Participation:

Along with regular attendance, students need to participate and be prepared for class. I will award student points for bringing their TEXTBOOK and CALCULATOR to my class each day. Participation will be weighted 5% of the overall grade.

Exams and Quizzes:

Exam/Quizzes will be given weekly. Exams will be weighted 35% and quizzes will be weighted 25% of your semester grade. Missed exams/quizzes may be excused with those points being transferred to the Semester Final Exam. Semester Final Exams will be cumulative and are worth 15% of your semester grade.

Projects:

A project may be assigned each semester. Projects, depending on the difficulty, may be scored in the exam category or as extra credit.

Attendance:

Regular attendance is essential to be successful in this college level course. Please, contact other students in the class to see what you missed should you miss a class. Advance notice of an absence is appreciated and helpful to the student. AP Statistics is a fast paced course and it is difficult to remain current in the content and assignments should a student miss a class.
