Constructing Citations 101 – APA Style

Constructing a citation involves gathering all the elements (or details) of that source together.

For example for a BOOK, you need the following:

Author. Year of publication. Title (Edition). Place of publication: Publisher.

Example:

Lilienfeld, S. O., Lynn, S. J., Ruscio, J., & Beyerstein, B. L. (2010). 50 Greats of popular psychology: Shattering widespread misconceptions about human behavior. Chichester, West Sussex: Wiley-Blackwell.

Voiceover:

“Here is the information we need to find the book: the title, the authors, publisher and the year and place of publication. These details are known as the citation. You need this information for your reference list.”

To do this exercise correctly, you must rewrite each citation by combining the various elements in a citation in the correct order.

Four reference examples are used: book, journal article, webpage and e-book.

Hint: Remember that APA style is an ‘Author-Date’ system so your citation will start with the Author, then the Year of Publication....
