For Immediate Release: February 15, 2018Imagine Housing Opens 91 Affordable Apartments for Seniors in KirklandKirkland, WA– On February 21, 2018, Kirkland-based nonprofit Imagine Housing will host a grand opening and ribbon cutting at its newest property, Athene. Located in the Totem Lake neighborhood of Kirkland, Athene provides 91 new studio, 1- and 2-bedroom apartments for low-income seniors. Twenty apartments are reserved for seniors exiting homelessness.“One of the City Council’s goals is to ensure housing options that meet a diverse range of needs,” said Kirkland City Councilmember Tom Neir, Chair of the Council’s Planning and Economic Development Committee. “Projects like Athene, with its focus on affordable choices for seniors, are critical in moving our community closer to achieving that goal.”Athene opened its doors to residents in December 2017 and will continue to move new residents in until early March 2018. The sustainably-built community features attractive and inviting community spaces; handicap-accessible spaces and universal design features; and easy access to Eastside shopping, services, and transportation. On-site supportive services will enhance health, wellness, and community engagement. The new community will help serve many seniors who, despite living and working in the community for years, can no longer afford Eastside rents. “Housing prices continue to rise on the Eastside and affordability is a serious issue for seniors who have lived here, often for decades, and can no longer afford to live in their communities,” says Manka Dhingra, Senator in Washington State’s 45th District, which includes Kirkland. “That’s why affordable housing options, like this one, are so critical. Everyone needs affordable, stable, and safe homes. This new community will meet that need for over one hundred low-income seniors. Organizations like Imagine Housing are making a difference, one person at a time.” The program will feature distinguished guest speakers, including: King County Executive Dow Constantine; Kirkland City Councilmember Toby Nixon; Kim Herman, Executive Director of the Washington State Housing Finance Commission; Bob Powers, Vice President of Chase Community Development Banking; and Kevin Kilbane, Vice President and Managing Director of Acquisitions at Raymond James Tax Credit Funds, Inc.Funding for the development of Athene is provided by: JP Morgan Chase Community Development Banking, Raymond James Tax Credit Funds, Inc., Washington State Department of Commerce, King County, Washington Community Reinvestment Association, Washington State Housing Finance Commission, Impact Capital, and King County Housing Authority. Funding is also provided by the Eastside Housing Trust Fund, administered by A Regional Coalition for Housing (ARCH) with funding from the cities of Bellevue, Clyde Hill, Hunts Point, Issaquah, Kenmore, Kirkland, Medina, Mercer Island, Newcastle, Redmond, Sammamish, Woodinville, and Yarrow Point. “We are proud to partner with supporters and experts who share an understanding that building quality, affordable housing strengthens the Eastside and allows all residents to thrive,” said Villette Nolon, Executive Director of Imagine Housing. “We want to provide our senior neighbors the opportunity for quality affordable housing in their chosen community.”Imagine Housing is the leading, award-winning affordable housing developer based in East King County.
