APUSH is a challenging course that is designed to be the equivalent of a freshman college course in a high school setting. It is a two-semester survey of American history from exploration to the present. To succeed in this class, you will need solid reading and writing skills along with a willingness to devote considerable time to homework and study. We will emphasize critical and evaluative thinking skills, essay writing, and interpretation of original source documents and scholarly research. The good news is that the historical thinking skills you will learn are highly transferable; the ability to reason chronologically, to compare and contextualize events, to interpret and synthesize, and to craft and substantiate an argument are applicable to many other academic and practical disciplines, and they will serve you well in your college, career, and civic life.Given all we need to cover in this course, our limited class time will be used to clarify, apply, and extend information from the prior night’s reading assignment. Every day, you are expected to participate in class discussions of primary documents, events, debates of key issues, and partner/group activities. Therefore, you must come to class every day with your notes from the previous night’s reading. You will also develop your writing skills through regular short essays, essay exams, and writing quizzes. To ensure you come to class prepared to contribute to the day’s learning, there will be brief quizzes or other assessments based on the homework readings at the beginning of every class. I am here to coach and support you, but your effort is what will determine your success in this class. You will ultimately be responsible for learning 50%-65% of the content on your own. Please come to class with questions on content. Much of our class time will be spent on skills and connecting overall content that you must already know. The Absolute Most Important Information in this Entire SyllabusYou, the student, as a whole person, are my top priority as a teacher. Due to the rigor of this course, and the fact that you are often taking multiple rigorous courses on top of other school and community activities, a high degree of stress may develop. While stress is normal, it should never be suffocating. First and foremost, you should know that the language of our classroom is one of love and laughter. Your well-being matters more to me than any test score could ever mean. You should know that my door is always open to you and I am here to listen and provide as much support as I can. Just the same, parents should know that I am always available to talk. If the workload of the course becomes overwhelming, students should talk to me individually so that we can strategize about how to make things work while also accomplishing the objectives of the course. AP courses are not for everyone and there is no shame in electing to take a different level of the course. AP courses do not define who you are as a person, what type of colleges you will be able to get into, or you as a student. Sometimes, through absolutely no fault of our own, the weight of the stress and emotions in our lives become overwhelming. You have a right to feel mentally and physically safe. You should know that every adult in the school, including myself and our Guidance Counselors, are always willing to listen. However, if you do not feel comfortable talking with one of us, a few important numbers that you can utilize 24/7/365 are:Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741Every texter is connected with a Crisis Counselor, a real-life human being trained to bring texters from a hot moment to a cool calm through active listening and collaborative problem solving.TrevorText for LGBTQ Youth: Text TREVOR to 1-202-304-1200TrevorText is a confidential and secure resource that provides live help for LGBTQ youth with a trained specialistThe National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1 800-273-8255a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distressBooksYOUR BEST FRIEND = Textbook: America’s History, 8th Edition. James A. Henretta, Eric Hinderaker, Rebecca Edwards and Robert Self. Bedford/St. Martin, 2014.It is suggested that you purchase an AP US History Study exam prep book. Please make sure it is for the revised test (2015 or later). You will be given many texts to read, or videos to watch in class or at home. These will be provided to you and available in the library in Edmodo.Materials Required3” three-ring Binder with pockets just for APUSH. You will turn this binder in every unit so it must be dedicated to APUSH only (NUSH).Notebook paper18 Tab Dividers with Tabs Filled OutHighlighters, pens (black/blue and red) and pencils with erasers should be brought to class dailyEither 7 map pencils or markers (red, orange, purple, yellow, green, light blue, and dark blue)Index Cards 3”x5” or 4”x6”HeadphonesAccess to Internet outside of classroom***Suggestion: Get a pencil bag to keep all supplies in NUSHCourse ContentA. NUSH (Notebook for United States History)Your notebook will be turned in at every test. We will go over what I will be grading in your notebook. The rubric for your NUSH will serve as bonus points on your test (or you could call it a curve). I will not curve tests at all, so the only way to make extra points is to turn in your cell phones daily and complete your NUSH. It is your choice. Each student is to have a notebook and bring it to class each day. Notebooks may be collected at any point in the semester so please keep them as neat as possible. Along with reading the textbook, taking notes is the primary way you will learn APUSH. The points below may help students in note taking.Take complete, date class notes. Notes should be more than just what items are listed on the whiteboard or PowerPoint.Put the notes in your own words. Don’t write down something you don’t understand without asking about it!Leave some blank spaces on each page to make additions and/or clarifications.Review your class notes each day while they are fresh in your mind. Expand them, clarify them, and add examples so they will make sense when you go back to study them later. Note anything that doesn’t make sense and ask questions in class the following day. Before class look over the notes from the proceeding day. This is especially important if a topic is presented over multiple days.B. Reading Note Quizzes Students are required to read their book daily and take reading notes and be familiar with the vocabulary words in the book. Notes MUST be handwritten. If you handwrite your notes, you may use them on your open-note pop reading quizzes. If they are typed, no notes allowed (and you must redo them). IDs are also reading notes and can be used on the quizzes. If you use someone else’s reading notes either on a quiz or turn them in as your own, both you and the other person will receive a zero for the assignment and a notation of cheating. You may work together on assignments, but what you turn in and use in class MUST BE YOUR OWN WORK!C. Late WorkPer the PHS Social Studies policy, a student may turn in an assignment late by one day for a 30% deduction, or 2 days for a 50% deduction. After that, assignments will not be accepted. If the assignment was assigned in advance, students must get the assignment to me regardless if they are present or not. Email is the easiest way. Check the online calendar for anything due that date.Makeup tests and quizzes must be scheduled within two days of the absence. Check with me the day you return, preferably before school, to set up an appointment. Communicate with me. I understand that life happens. If something big is going on in your life that prevents you from meeting deadlines, come see me and we can work something out to prevent your grade from suffering.Students who miss unit tests will receive alternate tests which could be essay tests.PLEASE DO NOT MISS THIS CLASS!When you are ABSENT ... Come back to class fully prepared! Everything is available to you online - use it! Find out what we’re doing/what’s due on the calendar and have it ready to go the day you get back; then you won’t be behind! Find an absent buddy in class to catch up with before returning to class. Also speak to your team at your table on how to get updated (before asking Ms. Wilson). If you have further questions, speak to me after class. D. IDs and TimelinesReading Notes can be taken in various ways (IDs, Cornell Notes, MindMaps, etc). Part of learning is figuring out what works best for you. However, IDs and Timelines are REQUIRED as grades with each unit. Students cannot correct an exam unless they can produce at least completed IDs and Timelines. Detailed instructions on IDs will be given to students and available on the webpage.E. Electronic DevicesYou are to put your cell phone in your assigned slot every day before class starts. By doing this, you can earn points toward your test. On test days, you will not be able to take your test unless your devices are turned in (including watches). If you choose not to turn in your devices daily (thereby losing any curve points), and you are caught using a device without permission, I will confiscate your device and you may retrieve it after 2:30 in the office (you must pay a fine to get it back). On days that you are to keep your devices because you will use them, there will be a red sign on the holder so you know not to turn in your device. Should you have an emergency going on and might need access to your phone (this should be rare) speak to me privately BEFORE class starts, and we can make temporary arrangements.F. Test Correction Procedure Students may choose to correct 2 tests each 9 weeks up to a 70%. Test corrections must be done in tutoring and follow the correction process exactly. In order to participate in this opportunity, students must complete their Chapter/Unit notes first and show them to Ms. Wilson before participating in test corrections. You must fill out a request to retest with your notes at least 24 hours before you want to come in and work on corrections. Test corrections or essay corrections must be completed within two (2) weeks of the original test/essay date. G. PoliciesAt the beginning of each unit, you will receive a Unit/Chapter reading notes and terms, and a calendar that will specify the readings and assignments for the unit and the dates of the unit test (also available on my website). All readings and assignments must be completed by the assigned due dates. You are invited and encouraged to see me for extra help, advice, or guidance. I encourage you to approach me after class so that I can give you my undivided attention (if I am free) or see me in the halls, e-mail me at wilsond@, or stop by before or after school, so that I know we need to talk. PUT YOUR NAME ON YOUR ASSIGNMENTS. I have 150 students, and if I don’t have a name, you get no credit. If you realize it in time, you can turn in the assignment for late points.H. Grades60% Major Grades – tests, essays, discussions, presentations, notebooks, extended readings and other major assignments, NUSH30% Daily Grades – Term sheets, homework, in-class activities, quizzes10% Participation – Students need to participate. I will be keeping track daily of valid participation. You can check your grades anytime on Skyward. Since this is an AP course, I expect you to keep track of your grades and assignments you are missing.I. Test Correction Procedure Students may choose to correct 2 tests each 9 weeks up to a 70%. Test corrections must be done in tutoring and follow the correction process exactly. In order to participate in this opportunity, students must complete their Chapter/Unit/ID/Timeline notes first and show them to Ms. Wilson before participating in test corrections. You must fill out a request to retest with your notes at least 24 hours before you want to come in and work on corrections. Test corrections or essay corrections must be completed within two (2) weeks of the original test/essay date. J. Use your ResourcesBefore you send me an email or a message with a question, see if the answer is online or in your NUSH. If you ask me when a quiz is, I will respond to look at your calendar (either online or the one I gave you in class), etc. Think before you hit that send button.K. College Board TestYou are expected to take the College Board test May 8, 2020. Passing this test will give you 6 credit hours at most colleges/universities. At the high school level, this will also allow you to exempt your final exam for the spring semester. The exam consists of:55 Multiple Choice3 Short Answer1 Document Based Question1 Long Essay Question (Choice from 3)Classroom Procedure and Expected DecorumI expect you to act professionally. Be on time and be prepared every day. Showing up late means this class is not a priority of yours. In college you do not want to send that message to a professor, therefore you don't here either. That means be on time (in your seat when the bell rings, phone already up, not on your way to it), be prepared (with your notes and questions), and contribute to the class’s learning by asking questions and participating fully. Be respectful: We will be discussing controversial and touchy issues in class. We all need to be understanding and respectful to others' views, even when they are very different from our own. The point is to think from a scientific and academic viewpoint.Respect yourself. Put the time and work into your schooling that you deserve. You'll never regret how hard you work. And, don't disrespect yourself to a point where you cheat. It shows your true character more than anything else you do in this class all year.Respect the space around you. I work very hard to maintain this classroom and the items/materials in it. Please do not disrespect me and my hard work by misusing or damaging items. Pick up after yourself and use materials sparingly on an as needed basis.Academic Freedom. Be respectful of others at all times. Respect your teacher and your peers by listening carefully to their ideas and contributions and responding thoughtfully. The best learning comes from asking questions and engaging in thoughtful debate. Behavior: A little kindness goes a long way – be kind. Engaging in private conversations, doing work for other subjects, arriving late or packing up early are considered disrespectful. Repeated infractions will result in conferences, calls home, and/or detentions. Be positive: Focus on your work and on the material, and you will do well. Believe in yourself. If something you are about to say is aimed to hurt someone, think again before speaking.Academic Integrity: Anyone who makes the choice to cheat will be dealt with via PHS policy. I will not grade any work (including notes, reading guides, and tests) that someone has stolen from another person. If a student copies notes or reading guides from any other former or current student, their entire binder grade for that unit will be a zero. Remember that your personal honor and integrity are very precious and are important parts of who you are. I encourage you to study together, but I expect that you will do all of your OWN work at all times. Ask if you are not sure.Because Advanced Placement is an accelerated course, some students feel the pressure to cheat/plagiarize. Please note that students who cheat or plagiarize work will receive a zero for that particular assignment and automatic parent notification. It is up to the student to meet with Ms. Wilson to determine appropriate recourse to improve both the individual assignment grade and trust. Please remember that per the PHS Student Handbook, if you are caught cheating, you get a zero on the assignment/test and cannot make it up. If you are caught twice, it goes on every college transcript that you send in. It is not worth it for a grade in a class.Getting HelpPlease don’t be afraid to get help if you do not understand something. The ultimate responsibility to learn APUSH is yours but I am always willing to help you in any way I can. To get help you can:Ask questions before, during, and/or after class.See me before or after school. On most days, I am in the school building by 6:30 AM and usually leave around 3:00 PM. If possible, try to coordinate a time with me so I can make sure I’m available. If you make an appointment, please keep it.Arrange to meet with me during OilerHour.Email me or contact me through my email, Edmodo, Twitter or municationPlease contact the teacher for any student concerns. It is crucial that teachers, parents, and students maintain open lines of communication in order to ensure the best support for student success. Contact information is provided at the top of the first page of this syllabus. I will always reply to emails as soon as possible. I usually do not check my email after I leave for the day or on the weekends (or if I am absent), but I will respond as quickly as possible. Parents may also join Edmodo and Remind (your student can invite you, or the code is on the top of this syllabus) to receive messages I send to the class.Other Helpful Hints to Succeed in APUSHThese are ideas to help you succeed in the course other than those already stated.A large portion of historic learning is understanding context, themes and skills. IDs and Timelines are crucial to this process. On one side is the term, name, or concept; on the other side is a definition or an explanation and context and skills. The ID cards will help you and be used in the following ways outside class:Making the cards helps you learn the vocabulary (or Quizlet if it works for you). You can easily separate the terms you know form those you need to work on. This makes for efficient studying. You can look at the terms and practice the definitions, or you can look at the definitions and practice the terms. The cards provide an excellent review which will be very useful for the tests and the AP Exam in May.Inside the classroom, we will use the cards often in class activities.Form a study group with other students. This is an excellent way to help each other. Beware that working in groups does have some disadvantages. Before forming a group make sure each member is willing to put in their fair share of the work. I’d be happy to meet with any group that wants to discuss ways they can work together. There are various websites which are designed to help students who are learning APUSH. Some sites include explanations of concepts and even practice tests you may take. I will be happy to give you URL’s for the sites I am aware of. You also have TONS of resources on my webpage and Edmodo, including video lectures and sites. It is my sincere hope that years from now, you will remember this course as one of the best you ever took; a course that challenged you and encouraged you to think critically and help you get ready for college and real life. I look forward to working with you this year. Good luck!!!! ................
