Students should possess strong reading and writing skills and be willing to devote substantial time to study and the completion of class reading assignments. ?Emphasis is placed on class discussion, the use of primary and secondary sources, critical reading and analytical writing. ?This course prepares students to take the College Board Advanced Placement United Stated History examination and possibly earning college credit. ?(Friday, May 11, 2018)?Mastery of content and grades are important, but of equal value is:*study and analytical skills*critical reading of primary and secondary sources*understanding and developing the historical thinking skills*using the historical themes to connect to broader concepts*constructing and evaluating historical interpretations*using historical knowledge as a guide to present understanding and action*empathizing with the pastMaterials Needed in Class EVERY DAY:* Laptop - You will not be allowed to enter class without your laptop.* Notebook – to be used for APUSH only* Pen - All work in APUSH must be done in pen.* Folder – Must have pockets to store writing samples?Class Supplies1st, 2nd, 5th periods – Every student is expected to bring a pack of markers (8 pack)6th & 7th periods – Every student is expected to bring a pack of pens (blue/black ink)?GRADING AND TEXTSGradingCycle grades are determined as follows:Major Grades (70%): Unit Tests, Writing Assessments (SAQ, DBQ, LE) & ProjectsDaily Grades (30%): Quizzes, In Class Assignments, Homework, Participation, etc.?RetakesMajor Assessments: The AP U.S. History course will allow a retake on ONE major assessment per cycle. Retake documentation must be completed and submitted at the time of the retake. The maximum grade for a retake assessment is an 80%.Chapter Quizzes: The AP U.S. History course will allow retakes on chapter quizzes each cycle. Students must have completed Cornell notes (C-Notes) to qualify for quiz retakes. The maximum grade for a chapter quiz retake is an 80%.Late Work PolicyThe pace of this course is accelerated and missing class could cause problems. ?If you have to miss due to illness, fieldtrip, or UIL activity check the HUB for assignments and due dates.?Daily Grades: No late work will be accepted. Make-Up Grades: If you are absent, you will need to pick up make up assignments the day you return. It is your responsibility to also check the HUB for missed digital assignments. Arrangements must be made with Ms. Kindred for submitting make-up grades. The maximum amount of time that will be allowed to make-up daily grades is ONE WEEK after your return to class.Major Grades: If the student is absent on the day of a major assessment, you must attend the retake on the date established by Ms. Kindred and bring the appropriate form. A calendar will be provided at the beginning of each cycle to inform you of important deadlines regarding reading material and assessments. While most of the material will be addressed through class discussions, debates, or group work, some of it will be covered through independent learning. NO FOOD, DRINKS OR CELLPHONES IN CLASSClassroom Expectations: This is a demanding course that requires a fast pace to ensure that the entire curriculum is covered. This course will demand that students are on task and engaged during every lesson.The conditions below will be enforced during the following activities:Individual Work: Students will not talk unless asking a question for help related to the directions. Students will do their own work and not copy off their classmates. Students will make use of their class time by working on the assignment.Direct Teacher Instruction: Students will not talk unless asking a question. When asked to participate, students will raise their hand and share out respectfully. Students will make use of their class time by taking notes and listening to the teacher.Partner or Group Work: Students will talk at a reasonable inside level volume about the assignment. Students will contribute equally to the activity. Students will make use of their class time by collaborating with their peers to master the learning objective.Quizzing or Testing: Students will not talk at all. Students will place ALL belongings at the front of the classroom, including cellphones. Students will make use of their class time by focusing on the test and completing the assessment to the best of their ability.Taking Notes and OrganizationTaking notes is a required and independent activity for this course. Notes are taken at home over the chapters in the textbook as well as from other readings assigned. Notes will be taken in an APUSH spiral notebook. This spiral is to be used for only APUSH. The only requirement is that the entire chapter must be covered. ?All notes will be handwritten. Typed notes will not be accepted. The same is true for notes completed over Crash Course assignments and Study Guides.?Flipped Classroom and Participation PointsThis is a flipped classroom. ?This is an instructional strategy and a type of learning that reverses the traditional education arrangement by delivering instructional content outside of the classroom and moves activities into the classroom. ?In a flipped classroom students receive direct content coverage through reading and video at home and engage in concepts in the classroom with the guidance of the instructor.You will NOT spend all of class copying notes from a PowerPoint over content you were supposed to read outside of class.You WILL come to class and actively participate in the activities planned for that instructional period, which will follow this schedule:1.
