The purpose of this project is to help decrease tobacco use rates of cancer patients in a culturally-competent manner to improve the outcomes of their cancer treatment. Furthermore, our project outcome data will be used to apply to The Saskatchewan Formulary for coverage of smoking cessation aids for cancer patients. Method: Currently, SCA’s intake personnel asks all new cancer patients regarding tobacco use status, advises them to quit/stay quit and offers a referral for tobacco cessation to help them quit/stay quit. On June 8, 2020, the SCA which includes both the Saskatoon Cancer Centre (SCC) and the Allan Blair Cancer Centre (ABCC), started faxing the Tobacco Cessation Referrals to BOTH the patient’s Community Pharmacy AND Smokers’ Helpline. Thus, the Community Pharmacy and Smokers’ Helpline can work together to help the patient quit tobacco use/stay quit. Community Pharmacists in Saskatchewan can provide PACT counselling and/or tobacco cessation prescribing for Champix?, Nicotine Replacement Therapies, and Zyban? in person and/or via telephone. The Smokers’ Helpline will focus on the virtual counselling which includes tobacco cessation aid consults, cognitive behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, etc. as required by telephone, online chat, and/or text. Until December 31, 2020, the SCA will use the CPAC grant money to cover the cost of approximately 12 weeks of smoking cessation aids (as well as the NRT minor ailment assessment fee if required) for a limited time via reimbursing the Community Pharmacies. Please call Lana?at 1-306-766-2816 with questions regarding manually billing the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency (SCA) for quitting smoking aid(s) for referred cancer patients. To receive 100% reimbursement of the patient's copay, please fax official prescription receipts for approx. 12 weeks of quitting smoking aids (such as single or combo NRTs, Champix, and/or Zyban) in monthly intervals to Lana at 1-306-766-2066. This coverage of smoking cessation aids will also be extended to current cancer patients as well. To help keep these cancer patients at home and safe during the pandemic, please provide tobacco cessation services virtually (Ex. Telephone, Pexip, etc.) and deliver quitting smoking aid(s) if possible.?Thank you for helping our cancer patients quit smoking at your pharmacy.
