Indoor Air Quality

Why is water conservation important?

With Georgia facing one of the most severe droughts in history, water conservation has become a hot topic in today’s environmental news. Meeting water supply needs is on everyone’s mind, and there are many things that schools can do to conserve water in their school and spread the message to communities.   Not only can conserving water save natural resources, it ALSO SAVES SCHOOLS MONEY!

Understanding the importance of these issues is the first step towards a brighter and safer future for the state of Georgia. Along with students and our communities, we can make a difference in the health of Georgia’s environment.

How will this assessment help our school?

This GGHS assessment is specifically designed to get students thinking critically about the usage of water at their school. The questions in this assessment address how much water is being consumed in your school, and where the water is coming from. Once students have completed this assessment, they can reflect on what areas might need improvement. Level 2 will provide a deeper look into ways they might be able to conserve!

How do we complete this assessment?

We encourage students to do as much of the assessment as possible, with teacher guidance. This assessment will help students see where improvements can be made to help their school be part of the pollution solution!

Please note that while some of this information is helpful in determining water usage practices, some questions may not be applicable or the answers may not be attainable. Some of the questions may require assistance from school administrators, building facility managers, or principals.

PLEASE PRINT THIS DOCUMENT, have students complete it, and save it for your records. This document should not be submitted to GGHS.

This assessment is based on and uses components of the “Wisconsin Green and Healthy Schools” program developed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Department of Public Instruction. It is also designed to complement US EPA’s new “Healthy School Environment Assessment Tools” for school district facilities managers. Notice: Participation in the Georgia Green & Healthy Schools (GGHS) program is completely voluntary. Names of participating schools will be posted on the Georgia Green & Healthy Schools Web page and information about practices schools have implemented may be used to promote healthy and environmentally sound practices and educate students. Georgia Open Records Law requires the program to provide records, including personal information, upon request (Official Code 50-18-70).

5) Now we will calculate school water use in gallons/person/day separately for both INDOOR & OUTDOOR water use.

Indoor and Outdoor water at your school should be metered and billed separately. Ask a school administrator or school district facilities manager for water bill information to complete the next question of this Self Assessment!

Using information from water bills or in-school water meters, how much water did your school use LAST MONTH?

|INDOOR WATER |OUTDOOR WATER |MONTH Data Collected |

|gal |gal | |

6) How many students and staff does your school currently have? __________

Total gallons used INDOORS at your school ÷ total number of people in your school = __________ gal/person

Total gallons used OUTDOORS at your school ÷ total number of people in your school = __________ gal/person

Now calculate the number of gallons used per person PER DAY by filling in the following blanks:

INDOORS:

Answer from question 7 above ÷ number of days in the month studied = __________ gal/person/day

OUTDOORS:

Answer from question 7 above ÷ number of days in the month studied = __________ gal/person/day

8) How does your school’s water use compare to the average American household water use of 150/gallons per day? How does water use at school differ from water use at home?
