2nd Quarter Writing Assignments

AP Language/Comp Blue Blocks 1-2

*You must turn in six of the following assignments – one each Wednesday, from Nov.11 through January 13. You will have 3 assignments that you may choose not to do, and one week off. Complete writing assignments in any order.

11/11 12/2 12/16 1/13

11/18 12/9 1/6

1. Novel Analysis (*see binder of AP prompts )

**This assignment you must do. You will choose a book from the lime green reading list for this class and answer a prompt in the form of a 2-3 page essay.

2. AP Argumentative essay - Still in the green binder. Choose a different prompt.

3. AP Analysis essay

**This is required. This is new & we’ll go through an example soon. Your prompt choices can be found in the orange binder. Use your bold colored paper with listed techniques/strategies authors use to help you with this essay.

4. AP Synthesis

Just as in Quarter 1, you have several topics to choose from. In all cases, you will use information from several different sources to answer a given prompt.

5. Theme in “The Fall of the House of Usher”

Poe believed that short stories are often designed to make a point or express a general truth about life. Such a point or general truth is the story’s theme. What do you think is the theme of “The Fall of the House of Usher”? Write an essay presenting the theme. Use evidence from the story to support your ideas.

6. Political Editorial

You will write an editorial, as either Ben Franklin or Patrick Henry, in which you respond to an issue from Revolutionary War times. This should be historically accurate/believable and persuasive in nature. Review revolutionary literature for inspiration.

7. Psychology and “The Fall of the House of Usher”

Some critics argue that it is the narrator of this story who is insane, not Usher. Others say that each character represents a separate aspect of human psychology – the conscious mind, the unconscious mind, and the soul. Write an essay in which you defend or refute one of these critical views.

8. Satire

We’ll read some examples of both historical and contemporary satire in class. You may choose the topic or subject for your own satirical piece.

9. Position Paper

There are two non-fiction articles linked to the weebly class site. Choose one and take a position on the issue raised in the paper. Do you agree or disagree with the stance of the author? Do you have a strong, independent position on the issue? You will need to explain and thoroughly support your position with either details from your own knowledge/experience or outside research.

*At least one of these assignments should be edited by another student in Advanced English 11. For this assignment, you should hand in the edited copy, signed by the editor, and the final draft – which should appear different and better than the first draft.

*Vocab bonus is limited to 10% of the essay’s total point value. Make it your goal to use the words correctly and appropriately so that they do not sound forced.

*All essays should be a minimum of 2 pages in length. I would suggest editing your papers prior to submission.
