5210 after school clubSession #50 sugary beverages!Ice-breaker: Sugary drink explanation! The interns will explain that lots of drinks have added sugar, but that the ones our bodies like best have zero added sugar. We will use 100% juice as an example and explain that there IS sugar in it, but that it is naturally occurring, from the fruits and vegetables used to make the juice (sugar is found naturally in fruits and veggies!). What is in these sugary beverages make us feel full and refreshed, but really aren’t giving our bodies anything to work with. Empty calories are calories that come from sugar, fat, and sodium but don’t have any helpful nutrients (vitamins and minerals). Sugary drinks can contribute to tooth decay, obesity, and a delay in growth and development. We will also mention that diet sodas and other diet drinks may not have ‘sugar’, but have chemicals in them that our bodies don’t really like either. It is best to drink water and skim milk! Yum!How much should I be having? American Heart Association recommends no more than 3 tsp/day for children (about 50 calories) and this does NOT include sugars from whole foods and milk. A Capri sun has 4t added sugar (1.3x more than rec), Arizona green tea: 17.25 tsp added sugars (6x more than recommended), coca-cola 16.25 tsp (5.4x more than rec); Snapple grape berry punch 27 tsp (9x more than rec); sunny d 7 tsp (2.3x more than rec). We will then play our game: Red light, green light, with jumping jacks. We will explain that when an intern shouts out a beverage that they think has added sugar, that means RED & STOP, and when an intern says a beverage with 0 added sugar that means GREEN & GO (start your jumping jacks)! We will play this game until all beverages on the chart have been used. The interns will have a batch pre-made of both smoothies, and will have all of the children taste test them. We will then have them split up into their kitchen groups, and slice up the fruit and put it all in a bowl. The interns will use some of the smoothie ingredients to pre-blend before the children come back for snack. The children will then play their game.Once the children return, the interns will blend the two smoothies together in front of the children, exposing their secret ingredients! While blending the interns will ask 5210 club trivia from the past four weeks. The interns will then have the children taste both smoothies.
