HOWITZER (year book of the U.S. Corps of Cadets published by the First Class). West Point, NY: Printed by Hoskins Press, 1884-1948; NY: C. L. Willard Co. Publisher varies. Not issued in 1899, 1901, 1902 and 1903. Official yearbook starting in 1904.
The class that entered West Point June 1913 (originally the Class of 1917) graduated two months early, April 20, 1917, and is known as the Class of April 1917.
The class that entered West Point June 1914 (originally the Class of 1918) was graduated ten months early, August 30, 1917, and is known as the Class of August 1917. The above two classes published one Howitzer, in common, which included both classes in a single volume, entitle “The Howitzer of 1917-1918.”
The class that entered West Point June 1915 (originally the Class of 1919) graduated one year early, June 12, 1918, and is known as the Class of June 1918. This class published a Howitzer entitled “The Howitzer of 1919.”
The class that entered West Point June 1916 (originally the Class of 1920) graduated one year and five months early, on November 1, 1918, and is known as the Class of November 1918. This class published a Howitzer after its graduation in 1927 and many of the individual photographs show them in Army officer uniforms rather than in cadet uniforms. It is entitled “The 1920 Howitzer.”
The class that entered West Point June 1917 (originally the Class of 1921) graduated two years and five months early, on November 1, 1918, on the same date as the previous class. Two classes were graduated at once. However, this class was returned to West Point as student officers (the only class in the history of the U.S. Military Academy to do so) and graduated a second time as student officers on June 11, 1919, and is known as the Class of 1919. This class published a Howitzer, entitled “The Howitzer of Twenty-One,” and on the fly leaf it states, “published by the Class of 1921 which graduated November 1, 1918.”
The class that entered June 1918 graduated June 1920 (the administration having reduced the course from four years to two years). This class is known as the Class of 1920 and published a Howitzer entitled “The 1920 Howitzer” (this makes the second Howitzer entitled 1920).
In November 1918 an extra class entered. It was known as the “Orioles” because due to the shortage of cadet gray cloth, they were outfitted at first in enlisted men’s khaki uniforms with a broad orange band around their campaign hats. This class was scheduled to graduate in 1922 but the individuals in it had the option of electing to graduate in three years instead of four years. Actually only 17 of them took advantage of this option and graduated in 1921, and are called the Class of 1921. These 17 men issued a Howitzer entitled “The 1921 Howitzer” (this makes the second Howitzer entitled 1921).
The bulk of the class that entered in November 1918 graduated after four years on June 13, 1922, and issued a “Howitzer of 1922” which also included the pictures of those members of the Class of 1923 (30 in number) who also elected to graduate in three years instead of four years. These 30 are designated as the Class of June 14, 1922, one day later than the regular four-year Class of 1922.
Then in 1923 the bulk of the Class of 1923 that entered June 1919 graduated and are called the Class of 1923. They issued the “Howitzer of 1923.”
All subsequent classes began issuing their Howitzers in proper order, beginning with the Class of 1924. Microfilm, Andover, MA: Northeast Document Conservation Center, 1904-1916 and 1919-1947. U410.N5.H84
