|LESSON STRUCTURE: |

|Who uses maps? Why are they important? Create a thought shower on the board of all jobs that use maps and charts. E.g’s include Army, Police, |

|Mountain Rescue, Paramedic, Navy, Drivers, Surveyors and Builders etc. Explain that Sat Nav is an amazing invention but is meant to be used in |

|conjunction with maps not as a complete replacement. |

|Read over page 112-113 in Foundations. |

|Start lesson by reading the Harry and Tilly story. Students have to draw symbols to remember the story. No words allowed. Give students 5 minutes |

|to feedback to their partners the story. |

|Introduce symbols – invent some for common items eg. TV, car |

|Introduce 1:50,000 symbols/why do we need them/look at categories |

|Complete OS Map symbols sheet |

|Move pupils on to Island Map Sheet as appropriate |

|Plenary – Play OS flashcards game. You will find the link to this at on the last slide of the PowerPoint Presentation |
