FHS 2620 Activity/ Lesson Plan Evaluation
PART 2: SELF EVAUATION
Spring 2013
Student Name: ____Shanae Schouten_____________
Lesson Plan Title: ___Art Activity Plan _____________
Dates Activity were implemented: ____2/11 & 2/13________
Children’s Participation:
1. Who participated in this activity the first day? The second day? Reflect on this information.
On the first day, all the children except two participated in the activity. The two boys who did not participate were in the dramatic play area the whole time
playing in the tent. As several of the children were doing the activity, other children were walking by and were interested in the activity and came over as well. I
think this helped because they saw how much fun some children were having, and they wanted to paint as well. On the second day, only two of the children who did
paint cups on the first day did not come over on the second day. There were also several of the children who were not there on the first day that wanted to make a
music maker on the second day, so I had brought extra cups for that reason. Most of the children participated this day, but there were still a few who did not come
over. I think the children that did not were very interested in the activity they started with.
2. To what extent was the activity of interest to the children? How do you know?
I could tell that the children enjoyed it because of how excited they were to paint and put the beans in their cup. As the children walking by watched the other
children doing it, they came over and wanted to do the activity as well. I think another reason they enjoyed it so much was because it was a pretty open activity
where they could be as creative as they wanted. On the second day, I think they were interested because it was something different and they wanted to see what they
would be doing with the beans, beads, and wheat. Then after you could tell how excited they were to shake their cups because they held onto them and shook them all
around the classroom. They were smiling and laughing, and most of the kept it right next to them even after they went to their next activity.
3. How did you get the children involved in the activity?
I introduced the activity at circle time by telling the children that we would be painting cups at the art table today. Then that we would be using the cups for
another activity on Wednesday. Then I went over and set up the table with cups and paint. I think that the biggest thing that drew the children's attention was the
paint all over the table from the children. On the second day, again I told the children about the activity at circle time and then I set up the beans, beads, and
wheat. as well as the cups that they had painted the day before. The children were interested by the different materials that I had set out for them to use. They
were also interested because they saw their cups sitting out.
What Children Learned:
1. Which children achieved which objectives?
All the children who participated in the activity met the first activity. As you can see in the pictures at the end, the cups are decorated. As for the second
objective, since I decided to go with cups instead of paper tubes, the objective will change a little. Instead of putting tape over, we used two layers of saran
wrap and a rubber band. So if the children were able to put the rubber band over the saran wrap, the objective would be met. Some of the children were able to do
this, most of them needed a little help from me. So this objective was met with a little help. The last objective was met when we did a song at circle time and
shook the music shakers up and down. Several of the children did this, but not all of the children came over the circle time area, so I was unable to observe if
they could meet the objective or not.
2. What did children say or do in the activity to demonstrate that they were learning? How did the learning change from Day 1 to Day 2?
The first day, I think the children learned more by the creative aspects they put into the activity more than anything. Akanksha was putting the red paintbrush in
the blue and yellow paint and watching what happened when she mixed the colors together. She showed me on her cup all the colors it was making when she mixed them
and found that they all made brown. Tamilee learned that when she put her hand on her cup in the paint and then on the table, it made her handprint on the table.
She was so excited that she could stamp her hand all over the table. Jackson found that if he used a paintbrush he could paint all the way up and down his arm. He
showed be that her arm was covered in paint and her was so excited.
3. What indicated that the activity was (or wasn’t) developmentally appropriate for the children in the group?
I think that the activities were developmentally appropriate because it allowed the children to creative in the way they did their art project. They were interested
in the activity and were excited when they got to do things their own way. I think that putting the rubber band on the cups was a little challenging for them, but I
think that it was good because I was able to help them hold the saran wrap down while they put the rubber band on. This was a good fine motor activity for them. I
think that the last activity where we shook out cups in different ways was good because it helped them follow directions as well as participated in a large motor
activity.
5. Describe and analyze the documentation that you collected(attach all documentation to this form):
(See next page with pictures)
Teaching Effectiveness:
1. How did advance preparation (or lack of it) contribute to the success (or lack of success) of the activity?
It was really helpful that Susan had brought in paint and paintbrushes that I had said I would be using from the lab school in my lesson plan. I think it also helped that I had thought over my activity after I planned it and before I implemented it. I changed to painted cups instead of the toilet paper tubes because I decided that the tubes would be too flimsy to hold and stay stiff with the paint on them . I think these were easier for the children to paint as well as to hold onto as they were painting. The cups also made a different sound than the tubes because they have a bigger inside.
2. Was the activity carried out as planned? What changes to your plan were made and why? Did the changes enhance or detract from the activity?
As I mentioned above, I changed the toilet paper to the cups and it turned out to be better. It allowed for a bigger space for them to paint on. Because of this change, I also used saran wrap and a rubber band instead of masking tape. I think this worked better because it challenged the children a little bit and I think it held better. I also changed the rice that I had planned on bringing to wheat. This change was because I had some at my house and I figured it would work just as well. But other than that, I used what I planned.
3. If you were to use this activity again, what would you repeat and what would you change? Why?
If I were to do this activity again, on the second day, I would set out the beans, beads, and wheat in bowls instead of bags. I think that this would have made it more presentable. I also think that I would have had saran wrap squares already folded up and ready to put on the cups instead of folding them right then, just so I did not have to worry about folding them. Last I think that would make the last part more clear where we go over to the circle time area to dance with the music shakers or done it during the next circle time. I think more children would have come over.
4. Reflect on your teaching experience. What did YOU learn from this activity?
The biggest thing I learned from this plan was how important it is just to let kids be kids. They will learn through their own discoveries more than anything else. What seems like a mess to us(teachers) are new and fascinating discoveries for children. When Tamilee was putting hand prints all over the table, and Jackson was painting his arm, they weren't doing those thing to cause trouble. They are doing things those things to experiment, they were learning as they went. It was awesome to watch this process because it made me realize that it was okay for them to be making a mess. At first I thought it was turning out to be just a huge mess with no purpose like I failed. But after I stepped back and looked, I saw that it had turned out to be a great activity. I loved doing this plan!

-----------------------
In the picture on the left, you can see Jackson and Akanksha painting their cups. You can see how Akanksha is putting the paintbrush that goes in the blue into the green paint as I talked about above. In the picture on the right, you can see Tamilee and Evie. Tamilee is seeing how the paint makes her handprint on the table. As the activity has just started, you can see the table is fairly clean.
In the picture on the left, you can see Penelope, Akanksha, and Keegan painting. I noticed that Penelope was very concentrated on painted every spot on her cup, inside and out. She did not want any whit on her cup showing. You can see that Akanksha has two paintbrushes so she can paint with two different colors at the same time. In the picture on the right, you can see a few of the cups that the children decorated. They are different colors, and the one on the top left was only painted a little bit. You can also see the table is more messy now.
Day 1
In the picture above, you can see Layden grabbing a handful of beans and getting ready to put them in his cup. You can also see Penelope has already made her cup. In the picture on the top right, you can see Maddix trying to put the saran wrap and rubber band on by himself. He was having a hard time and asked me for help. This is what you can see in the picture below. I am holding the saran wrap over his cup while he is stretching the rubber band over the cup. This worked very well when we worked together.
In the picture above, you can see Keegan shaking his music maker that he had made. In the background, you can see Jackson attempting to change the music on the ipod. When taking this picture, I did not realize that was what he was doing. In the picture on the left, you can see Penelope dancing and shaking her cup. She was spinning in circles with it and shaking it up and down.
