ActivityDescription of Activities and SettingTime1. Focus and Review Students will begin the class by watching Angelica Dass’ Ted Talk about “ The Humanae Project.” This will spark conversation about skin color and equality.4 min2. Statement of Objective for LearnerStudents will understand how Dass creates art using groups of diverse people and technology to determine Pantone coloration. 1 min3. Teacher Input Begin the class playing the Ted Talk and then go through the Powerpoint, stopping for discussion about important topics of diversity and equality regarding skin tones. When the class is ready introduce the classroom Humanae project. Key Concepts:Diversity: The state of being diverse or The phrase cultural diversity can also refer to having different cultures respect each other's differences.Equality: the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, and opportunities.Pantone Colors: Screen-based colors use the RGB color model—red, green, blue—system to create various colors. The (discontinued) Goe system has RGB and LAB values with each color. Pantone colors are described by their allocated number (typically referred to as, for example, "PMS 130").10 min4. Guided Practice Procedures for Classroom Humanae Project:Students will learn how to mix acrylic paint to create their own unique skin colors. Their colors will be painted on an 8x10 piece of paper. Wait for the paint to dry.Have students draw self-portraits on top of the paper using markers or colored pencils. ( Make sure to do an overview about facial features and proportions).35min5. Independent Practice Have students complete the above instruction. Go around the classroom to help students with whatever problems they are experiencing. If there is a common issue address the whole class and go over it together.6. Closure and Clean Up:When it is time to clean up the designated helpers will gather up materials from each table and put them in the designated locations. Finished work will be gathered by having each table come up and put their papers on the drying rack.
