|GOALS: To educate the children about plaque, the dental hygienist, the importance of good oral hygiene and proper tooth brushing. | |

| | |

|OBJECTIVES: First, our group will present general information about their teeth and the importance of a healthy, plaque-free oral | |

|cavity. Next, we will show our audience what the caries process is. Then we will explain what a dental hygienist does and how each | |

|child can help their dental hygienist in maintaining good oral health. Proper tooth brushing techniques will also be covered. In | |

|addition, we will read a story to the children. Lastly, we will distribute coloring activities and pamphlets while we work with each | |

|child individually to demonstrate proper brushing. In conclusion of our presentation, we will evaluate how much information was retained| |

|knowledge by having each child demonstrate tooth brushing on one of our teeth puppets. | |

| | |

|MATERIALS AND VISUAL AIDS: We will use a poster board explaining the caries process, various protective wear to show what a dentist or | |

|hygienist may look like in a dental facility, a large puppet and stuffed animals with teeth, coloring activities, pamphlets, and goody | |

|bags containing the following: toothbrushes, toothpaste, a tooth box, and tooth necklaces. In addition, after each child demonstrates | |

|proper tooth brushing, they will be awarded with a diploma and a sticker to mark their achievement! A teacher's manual will also be | |

|provided to Mrs. Davis so she can reinforce what was taught at a later time. | |

| | |

|ACTIVITIES: | |

| | |

|I. Introduction: Mrs. Davis will introduce us as students from the St. Petersburg College Dental Hygiene Program, and that we are here | |

|today to talk to them about their teeth. | |

| | |

|II. Demonstration: Julie will start off our presentation by asking how many of the students think it's important to have a nice, healthy| |

|smile. She will then discuss the importance of having good oral home care, specifically placing emphasis on a plaque-free environment. | |

|Julie will use a display board which indicates the caries process and will discuss with the children what a cavity is. Next, Alla will | |

|use personal protective equipment, such as goggles, gown, face mask, and gloves, to show the children what a dentist or dental hygienist | |

|might look like. Alla will then use a typodont and large toothbrush to demonstrate the Fones' method of brushing using "big circles." | |

|Next, Danielle will read a storybook called, "Brush Your Teeth, Please." Lastly, Sarah will pass out some informative handouts while | |

|answering individual student's questions. Sarah will interact with the children by coloring and asking questions while the students are | |

|evaluated individually. | |

| | |

|III. Participation: We will work with each student individually, making sure that they each have a grasp of proper tooth brushing | |

|techniques. We will also ask numerous questions in order to achieve class participation, and succeed in having an interactive | |

|presentation with the elementary school students. | |

| | |

|IV. Evaluation: We will evaluate the success of our program based on the visual results we obtain from the children. By working with | |

|the children individually, we can visualize what the children have learned by watching them demonstrate the brushing technique taught | |

|during our presentation. | |
