English literacy is based on an understanding that texts – both literary and informational – enable us to understand human experiences and that literary texts are open to dialogue between and among readers and texts. In this course, you will take part in several activities aimed at improving your literacy, specifically as literacy is used in English. While certainly the content covered in this course is important, a principal purpose of this course is to equip you with the tools necessary to be more successful in your high school coursework. Attendance/Punctuality: Attendance is critical to any student’s success. To be a successful student, you must arrive on time, bring all required class materials, be in your seat, and ready to work when the tardy bell rings. CHSAS classes run from bell to bell. In the unfortunate instance that you are absent, it is your responsibility to check the Google Classroom to see what work you have missed. It is also your responsibility to see me upon your return to discuss your plan of recovery. If a student earns an Out of School Suspension, it is the student’s responsibility to utilize the above mentioned to check for missed work and turn in all assignments missed on the day he/she returns to class. Grading: The grading policy is to ensure students are mastering the college readiness standards. Points will be earned based on the mastery of the skills taught. Practice: Daily practice of skills is imperative to gaining a deeper understanding of lessons taught. This may include skill builders, nightly review, reflections, etc. It is your responsibility to complete the practice each night. Assessments: At the conclusion of each unit, students will complete a performance task. The description of the task as well as a rubric will be provided at the beginning of each unit. In addition to the performance tasks, students will participate in formal and informal assessments throughout each unit to check for understanding. “No-Zero” Policy: Choosing not to submit work is not an option. In the event work is not submitted, students will be required to attend our tutoring program to complete the missing work. Take advantage of the resources offered to you, and you will be successful!Class Supply List: The following items must be brought to class on a daily basis:1 ? inch white binder with a front plastic coverDividers (5)NotebookPens (blue/black)Red pensLoose-leaf paperHighlightersPocket dictionaryBook of ChoiceParent Involvement: Parents are encouraged to take an active role in their student’s education by utilizing information posted on the Google Classroom.
