Job Description for DREAM Coordinator at the NCCSDApplications Open Thursday, October 22, 2020The National Center for College Students with Disabilities (NCCSD) is funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education to the Association on Higher Education And Disability (AHEAD). The NCCSD oversees and funds a national student group called Disability Rights, Education, Activism, and Mentoring (DREAM). DREAM was designed to be a virtual disability cultural center. It currently has a website, a weekly newsletter about disability and higher education, ongoing activities, a social media presence, nearly 50 chapters and affiliates across the country, and a student board that makes decisions about DREAM’s activities. The board is advised by Wendy Harbour, the Director of the NCCSD. We are seeking a higher education student to be the DREAM Coordinator.Job Title: DREAM CoordinatorPosition Summary and Job Responsibilities:The NCCSD and AHEAD are small progressive organizations that value diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in our programming, events, and materials. We also value DREAM as a unique national organization by and for students with disabilities and their allies. We are seeking a student to be the DREAM Coordinator.The DREAM Coordinator must be a current college or university student. Students in transition programs, auditing students, part-time students, and students working on their theses or dissertations are eligible to apply. The position is ten hours/week at $25-30/hour (contingent on qualifications), through September 15, 2021. The position may be renewed, contingent on funding. Start date is negotiable and there is considerable flexibility in hours around other work, academic, disability, and personal considerations. This position requires telecommuting, unless the DREAM Coordinator is near Charlotte, North Carolina, and prefers to work in the AHEAD office with other people. The NCCSD and AHEAD will pay for work-related disability accommodation expenses. Traditionally marginalized students are especially welcome to apply, including students with disabilities, students of color, LGBTQI+ students, and students from under-represented institutions of higher education (e.g., community colleges, minority-serving institutions). The position reports directly to Wendy Harbour, the NCCSD Director.The DREAM Coordinator will have responsibility for the following:Collaborating with the DREAM advisory board and NCCSD staff in the day-to-day operations of DREAM.Attending monthly DREAM advisory board meetings and weekly NCCSD staff meetings (usually held through Zoom).Assisting the DREAM board and NCCSD staff in planning and implementing activities through September 15, 2021. This includes planning the activity, disseminating information, identifying speakers as needed, arranging logistics and accommodations, and implementing evaluation measures to determine participant satisfaction with the event.Maintaining connections and information related to the DREAM chapters and affiliates, including helping new chapters and affiliates register and preparing monthly digital “care packages” of resources and information that are sent out through e-mail. These may be planned in collaboration with the advisory board and NCCSD staff.Ensuring that DREAM social media accounts (e.g., Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) are active. DREAM board members often manage actual posting, and NCCSD will be available to assist.Ensuring maintenance of the DREAM website. DREAM board members and NCCSD staff will be available to assist.The Coordinator may also be asked to do the following:Attend AHEAD staff meetings, which are usually held through Zoom.Represent the NCCSD, DREAM, and/or AHEAD through conference presentations, interviews with media, meetings with policymakers, etc.Assist with reviewing grant applications pertaining to DREAM.Write informal short updates or reports about DREAM activities.Identify students when external groups, the media, or policymakers need help finding student speakers, peer mentors, or students who can speak about specific topics.Advise the NCCSD on outreach and education for students.Initiate other activities or events the Coordinator would like DREAM or the NCCSD to do.Travel occasionally to conferences or meetings, with expenses paid by the NCCSD or the sponsoring organization for the event. Please note that during the pandemic all work will be remote (unless the Coordinator chooses to work at the AHEAD office in North Carolina, following masking and social distancing guidelines as appropriate and/or required by law).Qualifications and SkillsRequirements for the position:Must be a current student in higher education during the 2020-2021 academic year (September through May or June). May be an undergraduate, graduate, auditing, part-time, or in an inclusive higher education transition program. Students working on their thesis or dissertation may also apply. We will not hire accepted prospective students who will be admitted soon or recent graduates.Must be age 18 or older. There is no upper age limit.Must be legally able to work in the United States.Applicant must have experience planning and implementing activities or events related to disability. If those activities were done as a team, the applicant should be able to explain how they had a leadership role, delegated tasks, or otherwise actively participated. Applicant should be able to work independently. “Independently” is defined as what a student is able to do with necessary disability-related accommodations or supports.Must be able to work with teams of people with diverse backgrounds, ages, and disability types.Must have experience with disability (this may be through academics, activism, student organizations, volunteering, work, and/or personal experience).Must be able to communicate well with others in some way (we acknowledge that some disabilities may affect applicants’ abilities to communicate in specific ways and that is not a problem).The following are preferred qualifications, and are not required for this position:Some graduate-level coursework.Applicant has access to a computer, a printer, a phone, and an Internet connection.Familiarity with inclusive higher education transition programs for students with intellectual disabilities.Experience doing trainings, presentations, or teaching.Familiarity with disability studies or progressive theories and ideas of disability, including universal design and socio-political models of disability (e.g., the social model).Knowledge or experience of disability activism.Personal experience with disability: having a disability, having a family member with a disability, working in a support services position, etc.Knowledge of disability and higher education, including familiarity with higher education disability services, the ADA and 504 in higher education, or related topics.An understanding of Deaf culture and American Sign Language, even if the applicant does not know Sign Language themselves.Applying for this PositionTo apply for the position of DREAM Coordinator, you will need a resume or curriculum vitae and a cover letter.
