Hospitality / Tourism/ Marketing SLC

[pic]The HTM Community will meet the educational needs of all students by planning and delivering a meaningful and relevant Virtual Career Lab Personal Learning Environment (PLE) and Student-Centered technology driven curriculum where students are actively challenged to become productive learners for careers linked to the hotel management, restaurant, travel and tourism, marketing development and management industry.

| |

Vision

All HTM SCL school students will choose and actively pursue their own unique career paths. Students will graduate with marketable skills and the necessary technology and academic credentials required to pursue higher learning and chosen careers in the local Hospitality/Tourism and Marketing industry.

Model

A Career Pathway philosophy and program will be developed for grades 9-12. Career awareness and exploration activities in grade 9 will establish the foundation for development of an Individualized Career Plan (ICP) for each HTM student. Through career activities, assessments and inventories, and advisement from school and home, students will be guided to identify personal strengths, passions, and possible career goals. The ICP will be a specific, individualized written road map to assist student decision making in areas of course selection, work experiences, internships, extracurricular activities, community experiences, volunteering, and other related activities to empower them to properly prepare and pursue their career goals and passions.

Career implies more than just a job; it includes education, work, and lifestyle. Achieving a successful career requires years of planning, studying, training, and hard work. To assist students in planning wisely, the HTM Small Learning Community has developed career clusters reflecting community input and career opportunities unique to our area. Within each path, numerous career pathways or opportunities have been identified. The 4 career paths are areas of study that are flexible enough to meet student needs as they acquire new knowledge and experiences. Courses, internships, work experiences, extracurricular activities, and community partnerships will be further developed to support the 4 career paths and the development of an ICP by each student.

Career paths include:

BUSINESS/MEDIA/TECHNOLOGY

Careers in this path are in the fields of business and marketing. They include opportunities in computer programming, software development, desktop publishing, computer networking, insurance, accounting, secretarial, management, and entrepreneurship.

HOSPITALITY & TOURISM

Careers in this path are linked to the fields of hotel management, restaurateur, culinary, casino management, racetrack development and management, ski area development and management, and recreational parks.

FINE ARTS/LIBERAL ARTS

Careers in this path are linked to the humanities and include performing and visual arts and communications media. They include careers such as sculpting, music, dancing, museum arts, gallery owner/manager, framing, foundry worker, author, publisher, artist and actor/actress.

HUMAN SERVICES

These careers provide services related to people's needs, welfare, and personal safety. Careers include education, social work, police and protective services, law, counseling, childcare worker, ministry, and military.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Title of Project: Hospitality, Tourism, Marketing- Small Learning Community (HTM-SLC): Using the HTM Career/Virtual Laboratory to improve student learning!

Scope of Work: The purpose of creating student centered Personal Learning Environments (PLE) of the HTM Career Laboratory- POS industry software program is to determine if it is beneficial in implementing student's hands-on experience with industry equipment and software for all HTM-SLC students at Douglass High School. A career lab will include the student and HTM staff utilization of the POS Industry software with the current standards based curriculum. Data evaluation will include local businesses and Georgia State University students. These groups have already utilized the software with the added value of the software for employees and students in a restaurant, marketing and hotel management environment.

Career Lab Software (PLE) and Portfolios include: POS Hotel/Management Industry Software: Students are engaged in rigorous and creative centers influenced by the Marketing and Hotel Management industry based software used in the HTM laboratory center. Software includes components of: Front Desk, Room Management, Kitchen and Restaurant, Marketing and Hotel Management tools.

Front Desk

Hotel Manager

Students take on Hotel Manager roles to assure the flow of service is efficient at the front desk, in-room detail and in the kitchen. Student Managers also create business reports utilizing the POS equipment and software for analysis of the hotel financial condition (expenses, revenue), employee scheduling, time periods of service to customers and inventory.

Room Management

Using the Marketing Mix Principles, "Presentation/Packaging," Housekeeping and Management Teams secure appealing and clean rooms for customer readiness. Room design and organization creates a good impression on the customer.

Kitchen

Students receive, prepare and analyze orders through Kitchen Displays (Aldelo Pro) that are inputted through the POS terminals by the Front Desk Clerks. Once Kitchen Staff has completed prepared food and beverage orders, they notify Servers through interacting with software via touch
